  • A Norwegian family built a cob house inside of a glass dome on a remote island. This incredible home is extremely efficient, allowing the family to live here comfortably year round while growing their own vegetables and creating natural heating and cooling.

    Seamless fusion of principles with dome, cob house, geothermal, solar and stove underfloor heating, the bottlewalls, thick walls for insulation, growing their own food, reusing waste water, some very humble pieces of furniture. They've basically done what I'd only think about. Amazing.

    • @largemarge1603
      @largemarge1603 Před rokem +23

      @ug,
      Architect here, with the livability designer looking over my shoulder.
      The 'thick walls' provide thermal mass to moderate temperature swings.
      In this situation, the home is housed inside a thermal envelope, providing significantly-greater moderation.
      .
      Additionally, the mass of the structure is tied to the mass of the planet, increasing the 'thermal battery' to almost beyond calculation.
      .
      Compare this to a stick-house built on a raised foundation with a crawl-space for water-pipe maintenance.
      That construction style results in near-zero thermal mass with near-zero thermal battery effect.
      That structure requires continual inputs of outside energy -- electricity, coal, wood -- to heat... a process I call 'comfort through brute force'.
      .
      In today's tour, our guides describe increasing their access to vastly greater amounts of thermal mass through their design of buried ventilation tubes.
      As the air naturally convects through the tubes, the thermal mass of the planet automatically adjusts its temperature to the temperature of the planet a few feet/meters underground.
      This temperate-zone air helps regulate the interior of the dome, and with it, the comfort level of the home.
      .
      1980s.
      Los Molina, California.
      We built a subdivision of concrete homes using standardized 'tilt-up' warehouse construction techniques.
      That region is known for months of stressful summer heat.
      We built -- as warehouse construction dictates -- on a concrete slab (thermal mass tied to the planet mass) with concrete exterior and inside walls.
      We insulated the outside of the exterior walls, then finished using traditional house exteriors such as brick and wood facing.
      .
      Driving through the area, the homes appear identical to any stick house.
      However, the instant you step inside, the temperature difference is immediately noticed.
      .
      The second impact comes from the absolute silence.
      A wood house transfers the outside noise -- traffic, wind, voices/music -- into the resident ears.
      Our concrete homes provide a restful respite from the outside world... and I think this should be the goal of any home!

    I think it's a little bit silly to build a space-age dome over a Stone Age home, but I like it!
    It's not the most practical or efficient combination, but it's extremely pleasing! Maybe I will do something like this if I ever stumble into a bunch of money.

    • @theobserver9131
      @theobserver9131 Před rokem

      Aesthetically, I think the architectural styles clash. I would either want to update the home, or alter the architecture of the dome to be more complementary to the home.

      Did you know that 3 million Krone is only $300K US? And I'm not sure how this isn't practical. That dome allows for both hot and cold insulation, as well as protecting the home from elements that would break it down in all seasons.

    I just love everything about this house, in rural part of India some people still live in such mud houses, and I was too living 5 years back, mud hoses are cool in summers and warm in winters, unlike concrete houses they are very soothing to body and mind. Just loved the word OM 🕉 sculpted on the wall of living space of this house and sending lots of love from India.
