- WTF- as of 8/30/2022 this lil video has 193k views in ~ 9 months. I simply upload random clips from my own gaming moments I wanna save to show to friends mainly... aside from lil videos of whatever my current hobby/obsession is (car projects, pool shots, etc).
my 2nd most viewed video is a punk song by an underappreciated band from the 90's- Drain Bramaged at 5.7k since I uploaded it TEN YEARS ago, followed by my TLOU Joel Spartan kick clip which was picked up by some euro-gaming site I learned from commenters at 3.4k in 9 months.
In short- I'm glad so many TLOU fans found this dialog between Joel & Ellie interesting. We're less than 2 days from the launch of the 3rd iteration of the game so I'm guessing this clip jumps another 100k views over the next month hah.
I like how Joel and Ellie's relationship had reached a point where he can just say "okay" and Ellie immediately understands and drops it.

More that she is just respecting his wish not to go any further because yes he's finally opening up with her but it's also Joel were talking about and he opens up very slowly. This is what makes the writing so great and realistic. No “I don’t want to talk about it” or something cliche, or Ellie pushing him until he says it; he just dismisses it by saying “okay” and she immediately understands that it’s difficult for him. The growth they go through where Ellie tried to kill Joel when they first met to this subtle character interaction is what makes this game so memorable.

I might be reading too much into this but "okay" is also the last thing Ellie says in the game. It works the same way: nothing else needs to be said at that point.

I’d like to think that he got married in his twenties after having Sarah in his very late teens. He grew up without parents and had to take care of tommy as well and he was dirt poor. His ex was probably tired of him and the kid and left

I always hated that they didn’t explore that story arc a little more. Just a few more lines to explain why it didn’t work out

I think Joel not opening up is a part of his character. In order to save his own sanity he shuts off the past and focuses solely on the present. He can handle the most violent acts a man can commit but he can't open up and talk about the past it's to much pain for him to bear. Only through Ellie does he start to come out of his shell but it's still not easy for someone who is always guarded both mentally and physically there wasn't room for that in the world he was thrown into. He was so dedicated to forgetting the past he subconsciously made Ellie his daughter through the journey they shared and the mirroring of events that remind him of the past. He can't talk of the past only the present the future going forward and not looking back at all the bodies.

Sarah was 12 when she died. And the outbreak happened on the 26th September 2013. So the earliest Sarah was born was 27th September 2000, meaning she died the day beofre her 13th. The latest is 25th September 2001 meaning she died the day after her 12th birthday.
All we know about Joel's age is he was born in the early to mid 80's. So that puts the age range of Joel when Sarah was born is 21 at best and 15 at worse. And if he was on the younger side then he would have been 14 when Sarah was convinced.

I love the way he says "Too much". Normally he would have said that in a serious/ mean tone like "yeah too much, now be quite", but since he spent too much time with Ellie, he's a little more open to talk about his personal life his daughter and wife
It's just this little details that make the game great, some people would just watch the cinematics in CZcams when they should try to play it because you can learn more about the world of The Last Of Us with just listening to the optional diologue, looking at the surroundings of this world or with just exploring every single corner of the map

joel is 48 during the main game and 28 when sarah died; she was 12 at the start of the outbreak, which means joel was 16 when sarah’s mother had her, and i’m willing to bet she was in her teens too. they probably got married at 18-19, maybe 20. IIRC, don’t ask me for a source, but sarah’s mother left them because she felt she had become a mother too young, so joel became a single dad before he was 22 at the latest. it explains why he didn’t go to university, at least-and it makes me feel really bad for him. becoming a parent so young is extremely difficult even with a support network and the other parent in the picture, but being a teen dad with no parental support, a younger brother to take care of on top of an infant, and then the other parent leaves you? it’s no wonder a guy like joel, who never talks about his trauma, doesn’t want to talk about it-especially not to ellie.

I'd love a prequel-type thing that shows flashbacks to young Joel and Tommy and Sarah's mom ... but the main story follows Joel and Tommy during the 20 years before he wakes up in LOU 1
None of the family photos show the mother. It’s possible the same non-romance between Joel and Tess existed between Joel and his ex-wife. Sarah’s mom may have chosen not to participate in the family photos, either by departure or by suicide (but that is just as possible as an accident or misfortune during or immediately after Sarah’s birth). It seems abandonment is a key theme here.
I might be wrong but I thought I saw a picture of Sarah's mom on her wall in the beginning of the game next to the soccer pic with her dad. It's not explicitly her, but its Sarah with an adult woman and I think another girl? maybe a friend or a step sibling or something? It could just be Sarah with friends though, I didn't look too closely.
Well there's a lot o possibilities, they were teen parents (16-17 assuming mom was Joel's age) maybe she didn't want nothing to do with the kid, maybe her parents move her to another city, who knows

Whatever happened had to be very bad for Joel to have primary or perhaps even sole custody. It’s not unlikely that Sarah’s mom wasn’t just overwhelmed by marriage and motherhood at a young age and ran off. Ellie could run into her in Part 3. That’d be cool

Joel's wife hired a hitman to take Joel out- cause he had a decent life insurance policy. unfortunately for her the "hitman" was an undercover cop and Joel spent his early 20s in court defending his wife not believing it to be true. then Tommy- thru some vague connections got solid proof and was able to get thru to Joel and change his perspective.

( Joel’s childhood ) Joel Miller was born in September 25 1985 and grew up in Austin Texas with his little brother Tommy. Joel had 3 yrs in Tommy, since Tommy was 25 in the prologue and Joel was 28. When they were kids Joel took care of his kid brother which was not easy but the 2 were super duper close. Their parents were absent in there life but Joel raised him, how do I know ? Since Joel and his ex wife had her at a young age, the 2 would argue since Joel wanted a family but not his ex so she left him and Sarah. I feel bad for Joel 🥺
I think Joel was talking about the period after the outbreak happened when he says "For all those goddamn years I took care of us", since Tommy's response is not very cheerful and it's well implied that Joel did some pretty bad things before we see him 20 years later waking up in his apartment. But yeah, I do feel bad for the man when looking at everything he's been through.

His character arch is very understandable, relatable and heartbreaking to where it let’s many know that he’s been too much. Morally grey characters were the ones who I can relate for one reason or another base off what each of them has in store for their character arch’s to see what makes them who they are. Joel at least in my view is broken man who has lived through dark days of sorrow, misery and loss as he got older over time. He did a lot for Tommy and Sarah on his own without rarely getting any help from anyone which does take a toll on him.

I always imagined that Joel had intention/was married to the mother of his child but she died during child birth. I kinda thought that a man who was fully committed to raising a child at that young of a age was great boyfriend/husband material. Hence why I’d like to believe he never got divorced.

The reason this hidden storyline is so intriguing is because after everything that Joel has been through, whatever happened with his ex wife, BEFORE the outbreak, is too painful to talk about. Something horrible happened and I at first thought she left him but I’m more inclined to think she died somehow.

Whatever happened it was for sure something tragic. Weather it would be her leaving Joel or her dying when Sarah was young but even if she didn’t die, there’s probably a good chance that she just became another clicker somewhere out there. Which I think is what makes it more painful for joel to think about

I think it’s kind of hilarious how that might actually be the case when considering the commentary of *Grounded* and the cut scenes featuring Tony, Ashely, and Neil.
One of the two mentioned during one scene or another how they would ask Neil about what happened to a character while making the game. And then NEIL’S ass would respond, *”What do YOU think happened?”* He had the bare bones of his story for TLoU and allowed it to flex and change with the actors, but yeah, he probably didn’t think too far on his past.
I’d be mad about it myself if the lack of *given* info didn’t make sense with Joel as a character~

Yes, sometimes not knowing, theorizing and interpretting it your own way can add some depth to a character. However, if I'm supposed to believe these are realistic people with their own lives and experiences, then that means it doesn't matter what I think because something did in fact happen to them. I can theorize and all, but it won't change the things that they actually went through.

the dialogue in this game was perfect, im so sad tlou2 was a completely different experience. Joel and ellie is just a duo that cant be recreated it was lightning in a bottle to be honest.

granted I liked the 2nd one, woke bs excluded. the whole being forced to play as abbie concept took balls and while I would've preferred they went another route with those resources- say a Tommy parallel quest or something, I still found that aspect something new I hadn't seen done before

Assuming the ex was alive and they divorced years back, even if she lived just one town away, he most likely never saw her again. Just sad even if he had full custody and they argued over child support and everything else just by being in each other's company, Joel's whole life was erased down to being with Tommy.

I found out about it yesterday and I wanted Ellie to keep going to know about Joel’s wife
It was never confirmed she actually died. What if they were actually separated/divorced and sarah was visiting Joel for a few weeks or something at the time of the outbreak. If she is still alive (for a possible Part III storyline), this could explain why Joel and Tommy never mentioned her in the beginning since she would have been out of town. Eventually, soon after sarah's death, he would have had to tell the mom that she died, which would make their separation permanent.
Joel is not good at letting go, and he so he dosen't come to term with those emotions.

heres my interpretation of Joel's story before tlou: Joel is a hotshot football player in highschool, wife-to-be is a cheerleader or something like that, Joel and cheerleader end up becoming a case of teen pregnancy, and Joel puts aside his future to support the baby, and marries cheerleader in an attempt to start a family. Joel goes into the trades and becomes a carpenter (something he was confirmed to be and getting a trade job is one of the only ways to get a decent living without a college or uni degree) Joels marriage falls apart because obviously it did, they rushed into it and it was a teenage marriage. Joel gets custody of Sarah. Maybe mom wasn't suited to be a parent and thats why the court ruled in Joels favour/part of why they divorced?

In the ps5 remake, didn't Joel say he was in the military instead of mentioning Sarah?

Yeah, I know when I was looking forward to TLOU2 I was thinking "gee I sure hope they explore what happened between Joel and Sarah's mom who gets mentioned offhandedly once in the entire game and that Joel hasn't seen or heard anything of in decades".

It’s a shame to think about how disappointed both Sarah and Joel’s wife would be if they saw what he turned into after Sarah died
and what'd he turn into- a badass who's killed hundreds of people in self defense and managed to survive like 2 decades in a post apocalyptic shithole, and then STILL be capable of developing a father/daughter type relationship with a girl, save her life countless times, learn to trust her with his life, and then put her life ahead the entire human races potential future...
eh I clearly beg to differ, Sarah would be proud. (dunno about his wife, cause she could've been cracked out giving BJs in an alley for $5/pop for all we know)
@@PunkinRB Joel’s wife and Sarah would be disappointed to see him as a Hunter, which he was for at least a year, especially when you consider the fact that he most likely harmed children while he was a Hunter (Tommy said that what Joel did “gave him nightmares” and Hunters are almost always willing to kill kids; they wouldn’t have kept him around for at least a year if he wasn’t willing to at least help them capture kids for their flesh/resources). Sarah would also be disappointed to see him letting so many people die to save a girl who he only cares about because she reminds him of Sarah. If Sarah were on that table, and she could choose to either die for everyone or live, she’d probably choose to die, and if Ellie were a boy, Joel would barely give a crap about her. He got over Sam’s death in less than a week. You need to stop dick riding, and accept that Joel was a bad person. A very bad one.

He’s becoming more comfortable talking about his past, but it’s coming in pieces. He’s just started to become ok with talking about Sarah but her mother is obviously a painful topic he’s not ready to talk about.
@@EvilA110 I understand that that was the writers' intention, but I don't think people work like that. It feels weird to think of intimacy as being on a per-topic basis. If Joel and Ellie are close enough to talk about the most painful topic then couldn't they talk about any other topic? One explanation that makes more sense to me is that there's a limit to how much painful stuff Joel can talk about in a single conversation, regardless of the company.

@@EpicMRPancake Talking about his ex-wife and his daugher are completely differente things, Joel thalks about his daughter with ellie 'cause she reminds him about her, it's literally his daughter 2.0, even if Sarah's death was something terrible on his life, but apparently, there's nothing good about his ex-wife that Joel wants to say
@@EvilA110 that’s a good point you made, it’s understandable why Joel becomes more open to Ellie as the story progresses because of how Ellie understands him very well as she gets to get to know him more.

Another example why Joel’s early death was unnecessary
His character arc was finished, and the loose ends like his lie to Ellie were tied in a couple short flashbacks. There was nowhere to take his character in my opinion, so it was the next natural step and a good way to escalate the plot to where the player feels the same strive for revenge Ellie does.
@@ZombieSlayer876 the way he died also showed his growth while also paying homage to all the hurt he had caused in and before the 1st game.

My theory is that they broke up because Joel came out as gay. That's why he doesn't want to talk about it, moved to Boston, became platonic friends with Tess, and owes "favors" to Bill.
Joel does seem very uncomfortable around that magazine in front of Ellie. I don't know... that's pretty sus...

there's more than a few responses on this video where a handful of us share our thoughts on that- some seriously thought out with evidence, others (including 1 or 2 of mine) just ridiculous but theoretically possible... in short- read some of the comment threads here
Can’t wait for all of this, including the opening of the game, to be replaced by the left behind dlc and I bet we won’t even play as Joel in the remake. Lost all respect for this studio.
