I think Fernanda Montenegro deserved it more ("Central Station" is a masterpiece, and I'm not saying that because I'm Brazilian myself), but it's the Oscars... an American award for and from an American industry, focused in grooming new stars to perpetuate its own status. It's comprehensible that a young and beautiful sweetheart would win over a 70-year-old Latin American actress.
Jennifer Lawrence's win over Emmanuelle Riva comes to mind. I believe anyone who's seen "Amour" would agree.

Gwyneth is only a bitch that won because the influence ($$$) of Harvey Weinstein in Hollywood is very big... This is the most weak and pathetic performance in her career... After she won this award, she never nominated again... This only proof that Gwyneth is a pathetic actress... I can assure that's not for nationalism that Fernanda should deserved this award... She deserved cause she was brilliant in Central Station... The ridiculous Roberto Benigni won as best Actor too is the most non-sense and pathetic thing that happened in the history of Oscar... Fernanda not won this award because the whole world knows that the Academy and the entire Hollywood has a strong prejudgement against latin american people... Roberto Benigni has won as best Actor proof this. Anyone can remember when the Uruguayan singer Jorge Drexler was prevented from singing at the Oscars? He won the Oscar for best song for "Motorcycle Diaries" (movie directed by same Walter Salles, that directed "Central Station), with the song "Al Otro Lado Del Río", but Antonio Banderas (who not does part of the cast of movie) sung in his place... But anyway, Jorge Drexler sang a snippet of song on speech. This unfortunate fact was to me and the rest of world was the biggest shame of history of Oscar...

They had Cate Blanchett giving a once in a lifetime dramatic and hair-splitting performance that was unrepeatable. So suble, engaging, multilayered and compelling... it was unique! And they gave the Oscar to an OK performance but nothing special and absolutely matchless to Blanchett's who gave a marvelous meaning to the word ACTING in "Elizabeth" (I still think "Elizabeth" was her career best and not "Blue Jasmine").

Many people can relate better to her character in blue jasmine as opposed to Elizabeth who was a 16th century monarch.

Watched Shakespeare in Love yesterday. I'm not much into romance, but I wanted to check if those Oscar wins were justified (plus Geoffrey Rush and Judi Dench are must-see). I kind of understand why it won best picture: either the Academy didn't want to award a WW2 movie (Schindler's List had won a few years before), or Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line divided votes, giving Shakespeare the advantage. Now, I don't get why best actress had this result. Ok, Paltrow delivers a very entrancing performance, completely worth the nomination. I saw Central station recently and cried like a baby. Just to say that Fernanda Montenegro could have been mentioned in her speech too because her performance was flawless. If I were the Acadamy, Fernanda would have got it, and I am a Meryl Streep mega-fan.

That's your opinion, and i don't agree one bit, Jennifer was known for her great acting talent when ever since she was just 17, in her turns in small indies like The Poker House, The burning plain and then Winter's bone, a movie that gave her an oscar nomination even before the popular movies you mentioned when she was practically an unknown!! there are some facts out there that you can't just deny, although i respect what you're saying.
