  • In this episode I am crossing the Saloum Delta in Senegal, on my way to The Gambia. Another border crossing yes! The border crossing is fine - but the chaos truly begins when I board the ferry to cross the river Gambia! There are many, many, police and army checkpoints in The Gambia and they all ask me tonnes of questions. They don't get to see women on motorcycles here often..

It's important to demonstrate respect for authority in the country you are visiting. They do in fact have authority, and it is their country. Once that respect is established, you should enjoy good treatment from your hosts. I wish my country hadn't forgotten this fact of life.

The people were lovely and made us feel welcomed (I was a chaparone with my brother's geeography class who were on a field trip) and we even spent a couple of hours with the Minister of the interior and trade. Some of it was harsh, witnessing young girls and women rendering palm oil in 120 degrees celsius. But it was a wonderful trip and I would love to go back some day.
