"White Skull...who's just regular skull!" i laughed so hard :D
This is BY FAR my most favorite reaction by Ethan. His hilarious statement/question, "...just regular skull. What does that even mean?" It still cracks me up to this day.
"I'm trying"
" YOURE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH"
This was right after Original sin and the start of a downward spiral in continuity maintenance until Secret Wars
Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender was the story involving kid Apocalypse. That was a great run, especially the way Deadpool was handled as a character. Hope you guys get to doing it on here sometime.
We have to see 'Holy Terror' soon, right? If people agree, like this. I love good Frank Miller and I love people making fun of bad Frank Miller.
AGREED

Wasp and Havok didn't just go to the future. They lived out their lives up until a certain point after getting married and having a kid. Then when they came back to the present, they retained all those memories. Like Cyclops and Jean when they raised Cable in the future. I would like them to bring their daughter Katie into continuity. That would be an interesting new story.
+Kevin Marques Yeah, and losing their daughter messes them both up. A lot. No working for a better future after that one. (I forget: doesn't Kang have Katie?)
***** Kang told Jan and Havok that he didn't bother to keep his end of the bargain and he never saved Katie which messed them up even more, knowing that Katie was gone. But Kang could've easily lied to them and is just keeping her around as his student or something like he did with Ahura in Uncanny Inhumans.
I will say that I did hate the reveal that Magneto isn't Wanda and Pietro's father and that they're not mutants. I don't acknowledge that happened lol.
pious83 like like seriously. Especially since Wanda had known Polaris was her half sister since House of M. And not one mention of Lorna here. At least they included Lorna in Magneto's series so she is still his daughter.
Waking up to a back issues. the best feeling ever.
right??
the best part of waking up, is comics in your cup.
That scene with Carnage and Spiderman was awesome.....lol
God I wish Carnage stayed "good", cos he was still a psychopath. He ripped off a dude's arm for fighting with his girlfriend and interpreted the woman's screaming as gratitude. It would be fucking great if he had a longer series where he fights crime by being just as violent, and evades heroes because he thinks they think he's still evil. You could also have parts where his ex-comrades are like "wtf are you doing?" and he tries to kill them and ugh Carnage is so much wasted potential in general.
+Ylatch That's Venom. Carnage is a bad guy and nothing more.
What's worse than a nazi? A psychic nazi who turns into a rehash of a 90's monster
An IMMORTAL Nazi, thank you very much. Or rather, an immortal psychic Nazi super soldier... With two brains! Lol
+Paul Trycinski The worst kind of Nazi... haha
I can't believe I've been watching this channel for more than 5 years! I remember when this episode came out 😂
Ethan's criticism of how Onslaught can be a being of psychic power is consistent with my issues with Psylocke. Apparently it's also an ongoing joke as to whether or not the other characters can see the psychic weapons she creates. I mean it gets to a point I start asking what exactly is the differences between certain energy, psychic, cosmic, hard light, reality-altering and etc. based characters?
AXIS is the first event I ever read.
I only read it because I started watching this show.
I was disappointed.
Thanks TV Little House.
That's real. I'm sorry this was your first event, man. I vouch for civil war followed by dark reign. I just reread dark reign. It doesn't really require that much prior knowledge
This is quite possibly the worst comic I've ever read
"Fuck all y'all! Pym Particles, bitch!"
I dunno why, but that killed me.
Insta-liked your comment so quickly I never noticed I had already liked it the previous time i saw this episode :D have a new like then
The Axis Carnage spin off is kind of amazing
Eww. Red Onslaught's Psychic Tentacles give a whole new meaning to the term "mind rape".
God damn it, you beat me to it again.
Mind fuck is a fetish that exists.
Axis: Hobgoblin is one of the greatest things ever, and it happened thanks to this.
This whole Cap with a son in an alternate dimension thing sounds an awful lot like Angel season 3
+Allen Babylon I was thinking that while we were filming but I didn't bring it up because I knew Sal and Ben would not understand the reference
First thing i thought of. Angle did a comic book ridiculous plot twist... only to be copied by a comic book and done even worse. XD
Another episode of back issues YYEEEEESSSS!!!I love this channel so much.I wish i had friends who were into comics.
+Liam Bedford (LiamB17) Thanks Liam!
32:25 that perfect shot
I hope we get an Infinity Back Issue episode soon.
I come to hear Sal say something is a mess, but I stay for Ethan's reactions to shenanigans.
You should make this into a podcast on iTunes. I love binge watch/listening to Back Issues while doing work or drawing etc. and it would be so much more convenient to just have them on my iPod. Just a thought.
Joel Sittler I just washed an assload of dishes while listening to this in my pocket, Pls make a sound load podcast or something guys!!!
I enjoyed axis, I was a big fan of Rick. I think this would have worked better as part of his Uncanny Avengers run. Axis Hobgoblin & Carnage was fun too.
Death in the Marvel Universe is meaningless.
Less than meaningless, the poor guys are pretty much in purgatory. They die just to come back and suffer some more
Depends on how well your book sells
The one good thing to come out of this was growth in the deadpool character. His relationship with apocalypse was pretty great. Also, zenpool was awesome...seeing him as a non-violent and more mature/calm character was a kick.
I read and always interpreted Spiderman being immune to the hate Ray because Spiderman hates himself more than anyone. You should read Axis Revolution #1 I swear that was made for you and Tiffany.
"Tony, drink or i will die", like Barney with his friend in The Simpsons?
Also that Kenny impression was amazing.
now i'm trying to quote " Pym particles bitch!!!!" in my mastery essay (crivelli,2016)
javier solarte oh my gosh this is almost a year later but how did your mastery essay
say go ?? :D
it was... approved *puts black glasses*
thanks for asking!!!
javier solarte hell yeah ! good job! thats awesome.
Most of my comic book knowledge comes from the movies and these guys, and reading comics from the library.
I really liked the Carnage Axis spin off.
I have never heard Sal sigh twice in a row until asked which Hulk is in this book
Working through the back issues at the moment. Loving the hair in this video guys, Sal's looks especially different in this one. Possibly parted in the opposite direction?
I kinda liked Axis. Now that being said, I'm not a huge comic book guy and have no idea which books are in the actual continuity, but a select group of heroes and villains shifting allignment is a really interesting idea and gave us some fun matchups we wouldn't otherwise have, Like Carnage going around new york spidermanning.
And it ultimately gave us the Superiour Iron Man storyline which I enjoyed a lot too.
But as I said, I don't know a whole lot about comics or their continuities, but as stand-alone stories I quite enjoyed them.
Love how the font they choose was the same font for Axe body spray.
That's appropriate because this story stinks...
+Just Some Guy with a Mustache yes but do only doshbags like it
I thought Spidey was in the blast range of the spell. I could swear I remember a panel where a character asked why he wasnt being all evil. he said something like "its whats in your heart that makes you YOU." in.. carnage I think
love the channel. very underated
so true
12:51 A psion specializing in metacreativity is known as a shaper. This discipline includes powers that draw ectoplasm from the Astral Plane, creating semisolid and solid items such as armor, weapons, or animated constructs.
You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for doing this show. I've watched them all at least twice
And even though this event had problems, the inversion aspect made it fun and interesting to me. Great ep tho. Excited to see what the next Back Issues will be.
Cool concept, poorly executed.
Another perfect Back Issues. Love to see One Month To Live. Curious to see Ben and Ethan's reactions from Sal's delivery.
Finished a term paper, checked my phone and saw this was uploaded and now I have to stay up and watch it
Since you mentioned it, will you ever do Batman Inc. ? It was always one of my favourite Batman stories and it definitely has some nice wtf perfect for back issues
Absolutely! Batmen around the world, sponsored by THE BATMAN himself! Lovingly written by renown pretension magnet and talented weirdo Grant Morrison! Bring on the Batwing! lol
Personally I really liked this event. While heroes fighting each other is nothing new I really liked some of the inverted characters like Carnage who should have been changed forever in my opinion. For my money it was a fun ride.
you seem smart for a guy called not so smart. lol.
I like axis too.
It sounds stupid
IDK guys, I still kind of like this story. I mean I get where you're coming from saying how it feels cluttered, and it panders too much to movie audiences (retconning Magneto's kids and bringing back Cassie Lang; even though I'm kind of happy with the latter retcon), and contains some "out of left field characterizations" (when the hell did Red Skull get such a hate boner for mutants?), and not helped by the fact that the results of this event have mostly felt like they were thrown under the bus (then again you can say that about most of the Pre-Secret Wars 2015 Marvel stories; Doc Green anyone?!).
However, I still liked the characterizations of the bad guys being good, the good guys basically acting like the revenants in Mortal Kombat X, having solid tie-ins with Deadpool and Carnage books, and even though the we had different artists it still felt good and consistent. Overall I thought this was fun and while it kind of weirds me out how so many other people don't like it, I'm glad that you're at least trying to help me understand why.
I think this is one of my favorite episodes xD so great thanks you guys!
I love this channel but there were a few inaccuracies in this episode:
1. Sunfire, not Sunspot
2. Havok and Wasp did not go to the future, they came back from "A" future
3. Wanda and Pietro not being mutants anymore never happened....LALALAlalala
Its hard to believe that this is written by the same guy who wrote Uncanny X-Force.
The first volume Of Uncanny Avengers is one of my favorite runs of all time but this event as the (pseudo) conclusion of it was a massive disappointment
This was a great show and I agree that the logo was a mess for this event. I am so happy that you guys did this event. I was lost at points by not knowing all of the back stories of all the characters. This helped fill in some of the gaps.
+Michele Mccarthy Thank you, Michele!
It says sixis
I swear every time Sal reads a crappy or convoluted comic event like this one and Ben or Ethan start to look confused and incredulously ask about some terrible leap in logic or insanely stupid plot development that makes no sense, Sal should quietly bring out a 12"x8" laminated sign that reads in bold letters: BECAUSE... COMICS! That way you constantly have a reference tool to point at when that weeks Back Issues invariably goes awry with bad story telling or Ben&Ethan start their patented probing and hilarious scrutinizing using real world logic and common sense! Because... Comics! Lol
I just don't get it. Remender isn't a bad writer. The Planet X story with the Apocalypse Twins was awesome. I love the whole Dimension Z storyline from Cap's book. But this? I think this is the most horrible thing I've read from Marvel.
One question i have about this story after Secret Wars: does this still happened? When the final incursion destroyed earth 616 and 1610, Ironman was still "inverted" as superior ironman, but after secret wars he was back to normal (like you said), it feels like those last 8 months of incursions on "running out of time" (Cap going after the Iluminati, Thor and his group fighting the Beyonders), those stories never happened now, which is kind of implied when Black Panter used the time gem to escape the destruction of Battleworld and ended up right back when the first incursion happened...
The worst parts of SIXIS to me was that it made me doubt the stories I grew up with, like the original Onslaught storyline. Yes, it was big and dumb, but it was my childhood! I don't want to be reminded that it was big and dumb by this big and dumb event!
AXIS was the beginning of the end for me and Marvel. I only started reading comics a year before this, the event seemed to tie back to AvX which I hadn't read, and the first issue didn't make any sense to me. Also, weren't they charging like $5 an issue? Whatever it was, I couldn't afford to buy more than the first 2 books. My problem was it seemed to be making every character unlikable. Then Original Sin and Secret Wars finished me off.
Just finished my AP's, and this definitely made a very stressful day brighter :)
Love going back through the catalog. Always a good way to decompress.
i had forgotten this even happen... love you guys. hope annihilation is next
I agree that this event was a mess, and a bummer ending to the story Remender was telling through all of Uncanny X-force and Uncanny Avengers. A few more thoughts I had:
1. I found it very odd and unbelievable that Dr Doom would not have psychic/magic buffers to protect himself from the inversion spell.
2. I really wanted to see inverted Reed Richards actually care more about his family than science and just take the day off to picnic with Sue and the kids.
3. I really hated that ending with Scott taking in inverted Alex and the kidnapped Janet. Scott is a renegade, but he is not a villain and would not let that stand. Granted I did not read much of the Bendis uncanny run since i heard it was horrible.
Reed cares a lot more about his family than science. And he takes days off and goes to picnic... but he does it in space or in another dimension.
Shadow Gabriel
That was the joke. The other heroes get inverted and are monsters who must be stopped. Reed gets hit and cares for the kids while inverted Sue goes out and hooks up with Namor or something.
"It's a democracy now!"
I lost it right there.
This was just an Uncanny Avengers story that got pushed into "Event" status. Had they (Marvel) kept this story in the Uncanny issues, it would have been a cool little story, but pushing it to be bigger than it should have been, to event status, it just over-valued the entire thing.
As a story, as a typical monthly comic story and not a "LOOK AT ME" event, it works very well with what Remender had done prior. It has great story beats and the flow is very well done.
Now I understand if you don't "like it", as either a story or especially as an event (shudder), but yeah,.it was well done and ties in perfectly to past Remender work.
the tie ins were better then the main book, namely superior ironman and axis carnage
Actually at this point loki already was a good guy. The inversion only made him "more" of a good guy
How is it that "Professor x" couldnt use his powers to heal his broken spine or a gunshot wound to the head, or inceneration from the Pheonix force, but somehow the "Red Skull" can use Xaviers stolen power to repair himself after Magneto used a huge boulder to completely crush his skull?
I use to enjoy this story.
i would love to see a BACK ISSUES on INVINCIBLE AND I HOPE IT IS A TWO OR THREE PART SHOW.......
It would have been great if you guys had reviewed Onslaught from the 90's, but then again, that's a lot of material to cover
"The Psychic shock of being killed" sent me 😂
Changing Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch like that was a really mean and nasty thing Marvel did
+The RED Samurai No the Scarlet Witch committing multiversal genocide was nasty. The fact that they let her pretend to be a hero when she killed a near infinite number of Mutants across the multiverse and she never gets punished for it. Then they finally make her a non-mutant after all that. She literally went from a good character to worse then the evilest villians and they just forget it happened in a couple of years. Finally she helps fix things but only for the mainstream universe leaving all the other universes they wrote she affected screwed over.
i agree
The new Carnage series is great though.
So what you're saying is, this is a Michael Bay terrible movie with a M Night Shyamalan terrible twist. Sounds like it was the summer of suck...
Still dissapointing because i thought at the end of this event they were going to stop all current titles and start over with all the villans being good and heros being bad for at least 4 issue miniseries. Like Dr. Doom #1 where he has to stop evil FF's plan, Red skull #1 where he has to stop captain america scheme, Sinister Six #1 where they have to try and stop spiderman that is robbing banks and destroying the city, A team of them trying to stop the avengers taking over the world, etc. Thought that would've been cool.
Great episode! You guys should do Superior Iron Man now.
Fall of the Mutants storyline from X-Factor for Back Issues during the week X-Men Apocalypse comes out?
I think age of apocalypse is being done for the back issues when xmen apocalypse comes out
+Dylan Gupta-Cassidy yeah hopefully.
+The RED Samurai The reason I said Fall of the Mutants from X-Factor is because its the Original Apocalypse storyline
Does nobody else realize this is basically forever evil from dc? But way worse
was about to sleep ... i guess i can stay awake a little longer XD
love your videos guys
+limnades worth staying up for!
Question, didn't Jack O Lantern get killed by the Punisher back in Civil War?
+Grievousish Sure, one of them.
ComicPOP there's more then one!?
+Grievousish At least five. But it is just a dude in a mask, so it could be anybody.
+ComicPOP Jack's greatest achievement is when he kept fucking with Agent Venom. which Remender also wrote a bunch of. Which is totally the only reason he's in this. Remender loves certain characters, like Venom, which is totally cool with me since Venom is my favorite.
Y'all should do a back issues on Time Runs Out. It's a cool prelude to Secret Wars.
I always had a soft spot for AXIS since it was one of the first events I experienced firsthand.
Despite its flaws I still love it
"THOSE ARE DIFFERENT UNIVERSESE!"-Sal 2016
Okay the inversion thing make things look really fun
hate to be "that guy" but Axis was the event after Original Sin and before secret wars.
+Dillon Eng hmmm I was just trying to find my new gimmick on here, but I guess it comes off as too "serious". I'll have to find something else.
Question, was Superior Iron Man any good and worth picking up? Don't usually read Iron Man but it sounds interesting
+Herosmurf It was cool.
loved the ep
This actually happened after original sin, still a good episode.
Ethan, Ethan, Ethan, when will you learn, that trying to apply scientific principles to comics only leads to heartache.
There is only reason for anything in bad stories.its called because of comics
This was hilarious, great work guys!
Guys, put a space between Avengers and the ampersand in the description. It's causing me to have a nervous breakdown and I pay my therapist too much as it is.
do JLA: League of One!! awesome JLA story with WW going house on the whole league to go fight a huge battle alone! check it out!
love Axis! love comicpop!
"Fuck all y'all , Pym Particles bitch!!!"
Fucking LOL
28:54 Apocalypse does use advanced celestial technology but cool episode.
this one had me guffawing pretty hard, keep it up fellas
Ethan is always trying to quote that movie.
I love Comicpop and I try my best not to be a continuity snob but sometimes I yell at the screen. “AHHH SAL!!! This takes place after Original Sin. Thor is Odison. Falcon was Cap before this event
I feel like the whole point of AXIS was to get Tony Stark to be...I'll say a less guilt-ridden version of himself (so he'd be more like the movies). And, really, instead of magic, all they had to do was let the symbiote Iron Man suit he built--because of all the Illuminati stuff he's secretly dealing with--affect his mind a little. Y'know, like symbiotes do.
could you do futures end?
+Nikhil Chakka We did! You're gonna love it: czcams.com/video/2P-_FDRbH1c/video.html
+ComicPOP funny
+ComicPOP please do future's end XD
