You know a character has a lame rogues gallery when the villain of his most famous story is alcohol

I guess it's better than...
Hal Jordan vs. The Yellow Billboard...
🤣🤣🤣
Hello there.
@@AiggEbe Which one? because DC's Captain Marvel has a cool af rogues galaxy.
@@darthekul1 I think technically the greek pantheon is canon in Marvel cause Hercules and Ares are a thing.
Ah, yes; the natural predators of Iron: intense heat. Intense cold. And whips.
Whips are the goblins of iron.
"Why do they call him shell head?"
*Looks over to original iron man helmet on shelf*
Really Ethan? You don't know why?
Fun fact about Jarvis’ resignation letter. The version you are using blotted out the contents but in the original issue, it was word for word Dave Cockrum’s resignation letter with some words replaced. It was basically how the Marvel offi- I mean the Avengers used to be fun to work at but now has degraded to petty squabbling.
So what’s worse:
Being labeled as a “Forgotten Foe of Spider-Man”
Or
Being known as an Iron Man villain
Iron man villain, Spiderman is respected by villain community
Iron Man villain in continuity it’s almost considered a right of passage for villains to fight Spider-Man. With some even placing bets on wether or not a new villain could defeat the wall crawler, cause, “He always beats the new guys.” Being a forgotten Spider-Man villain is almost expected, being an Iron Man villain is just depressing.
At least you get a pretty beloved Nick Spencer series if you're a forgotten Spidery villain.
I think Porcupine started out as a Hank Pym Antman villain.
Demon in the bottle AKA The story we wanted to do for Iron Man 2 than we figure out "Yeah we can't have overt alcoholism in our movies we market to children"
Obediah Stane, Whiplash, Justin Hammer, Ghost, Madam Masque, The Mandarin... Enemies that challenged Tony Stark in more ways than one. But none of them could compare to Tony's greatest enemy of all... ALCOHOL!!!
Don’t mess with B-Double O-Z-E... Cause that spells "Booze".
@@comixproviderftw_02 That sure spells boooooooooze!
Justin Hammer is literally why he starts to drink himself in the story. If Hammer didn't set up Iron Man, Stark wouldn't undergo stress and wouldn't resort to drinking. And anyone who have read John Byrne's run knows that there would be no Iron Man without the Mandarin.
Iron Man 2 had a lot of missed opportunities, Hammer being the most obvious one.
Yay, I hope this means we'll get 'My ward is a junkie!' soon.
To clarify, Tony does relapse much harder during Denny O'Neil's run on IM in the early 80s, and I think that arc is far more compelling
Tony outright loses his company, Rhodey becomes Iron Man for a few years and Tony becomes a straight up wino in the gutters
I would recommend reading that after Demon in a Bottle
(Recently collected in the Epic Collections 'The Enemy Within' + 'Duel of Iron')
Actually
I really like Denny O’Neil’s writing on Iron Man.
Stark was suicidal in his his run. That stuff was dark.
He drinks a Whiskey drink, he drinks a Vodka drink
He drinks a Lager drink, he drinks a Cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the best times
(Oh Tony Boy, Tony Boy, Tony Boy)
Does Tony Stark ever relapse? Yes, he does Sal. Issue 169 Tony relapses and James Rhodes takes over as Iron Man in issue 170. Tony’s fall and recovery takes place over a number of issues. Issue 169 was the first Iron Man comic I ever bought. Loved reading those issues as a kid!
Mann, Ethan is Killing it. I didn't laugh this much in a long time.
this is just like the days of futute past episode where the title story doesn't actually happen til like the last 10 minutes.
We gotta get that long ass prologue
Everyone congratulating Tony on not drinking like NGE's last episode where everyone congratulated Shinji.
Back to back Elseworlds and Back Issues is the best invention of 2019
But it’s been that for a year now. It is great though.
Anything that references Gus Chiggins is automatically just the best #CinnamonAndGravy
It's an unconventional war, folks.
"Your welcome, b***h!" My new favorite ComicPoP quote.
For real 🤣
As a recovering alcoholic, I love this story line.
Adran Aries This was why Robert Downey Jr played Stark so well. He too had hit rock bottom in real life.
@@Popcultureguy3000 The Denny O'Neil run is criminally underrated probably because it was highly controversial in its day. I'm kind of annoyed they didn't end the second Epic Collection book at Iron Man 200 since it's such an amazing conclusion to the Stane arc. I'd love to see them cover it here because it really deserves more attention, but I understand it's not a good fit for the format.
I laughed so much while watching this that my co workers ended up watching half this episode with me. Again nj represents.
@1:11:45_Yeah that sounds like Jim Shooter era Marvel, LOL.
That slow pan at the end is one of the best things I've seen on this channel. Ethan's shaking laughter just out of frame is brilliant.
I love how Marvel exposed themselves by taking someone’s actual resignation letter and just omitting “Marvel” and replacing it with Avengers.
Wow, isn't this, like, only your second Iron Man story in the five years that you've done Back Issues? I'd love to see some more of these lesser recognized stories on the show.
Man, John Romita Jr's art has _changed_ !
One of my favorites comics of all time. Demon in the bottle is for Iron Man what Born Again was for Daredevil or the Kid Who Collects Spider-Man was for Spidey, a story that not only is emotional and has great moments of the hero but also humanize Tony, showcasing his flaws, his fallen from grace and his struggle to rise up again. It's definitly one the best iron man stories ever made, and also one of the greatest comic book stories of all time.
Now can you go over the actual story in the Avengers of why Hank Pym slapped Janet Van Dyne? Because a lot of people still don't know that he was NOT a wife beater.
Funny how everyone shits on Hank Pym, but during the clone saga Peter Parker straight up backhands his pregnant wife... Peter was in his right mind too, not like he was driven to insanity or anything. He did think he was a clone, but that’s no excuse to bitch slap your super pregnant wife with a proportionate strength of a spider. Nobody calls Peter a wife beater, but to this day Hank is probably most well known for it... super weird
I always thought of the Porcupine as more of an Ant-Man villain personally, since he first appeared back in the 60's in an issue of Tales to Astonish (which Hank Pym was headlining at the time).
One of the most emotional comics Marvel has ever put out
I love the idea of Captain America wearing a vibranium alloy cup 😂
The Jarvis resignation at the end was hilarious!
Sal, I love your impersonations. Your drunk Ironman had me dying..."I'm gonna show this bitch all my Ironman stuff, introduce her to Captain America...you know Jarvis, why don't you just do your job". "Very well, Master Stark".😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love Sal's expression at 42:36
Drunk Tony Stark is one of Sal's best characters!
You've talked about this book so many times in the past i thought you'd already done it.
18:50 a classic ben moment
Been waiting for this one for years! Can't wait for Stark Wars!
Armor Wars is the only other Iron Man story I knew, besides Demon In A Bottle and Extremis. Two down, one to go, LOL.
@@R.J.Godzilla81 is it Armor Wars or Stark Wars? Everywhere I look no one can decide.
@@treyurbach2550 I had always heard it referred to as The Armor Wars. That's even what the 90's animated called its 2-part episode based on that story. It's a good 2-parter, has a lot of b-list Iron Man villains.😄😉
Finally! Now just do Armor Wars.
Did someone downvote this before it was even an hour an fifteen minutes old?...what is this, The Orville?
50:10 - Took this long to notice the Grace Kelly reference. Princess Grace is a reference to American actress Grace Kelly, who Married Prince Ranier and became a real princess of Monaco.
This episode might go down as one of my favorite Back Issues for 2019.
This episode was fantastic, everyone was on fire with the jokes, I don't think I've laughed this hard at an episode of Back Issues.
I know Tony's alcoholism is referenced in some Avengers and Ms Marvel stories in reference to Carol Danver's alcoholism and him being her sponsor so presumably they both do AA.
You know them both relapsing at the same time could explain Civil War II. Nothing else does.
Can we see Infamous Iron Man as a back issues soon?
"Hey, there he is. The Iron Man. You love that armor, don't ya? You know what? Take the armor. Take his booze, too. All of them. And his ambassador. Take his ambassador. I took your stuff. How's that make you feel? Do you feel bad? Good. BECAUSE THAT'S HOW I FEEL!"
The old dude who is overseeing the hacking of Tony's armor looks like Grand Moff Tarkin if he swapped lives with Hugh Hefner.
I read this about a month and a half ago, and I absolutely loved it. Plus, seeing the tangent released a while ago on facebook got me really excited to see this episode! Keep it up guys! And Happy Birthday Tiffany!
He does relapse, during Denny O'Neil's run. It is why Rhodey takes over. Cap gives him a speech about how his dad was an alcoholic, and he becomes a homeless wino for a few issues.
(8:32) Poor Blitzwing...
For how much that "Demon in a Bottle" is touted as a semi-dark, serious story, this is arguably one of the funniest episodes of Back Issues I've heard in a while (then again, Sal and the gang play a large part of that). XD
Sal's drunk Iron Man is so fucking funny.
There is officially so many episodes of back issues that I have forgotten some and can rewatch them. Have I reached nirvana?
Happy Birthday Tiffany!!
"The Island is fighting back!"

I had never heard of this story, until they announced R.D.J. was cast to play him in the first Iron Man movie, and everybody started speculating they were going to follow this comics storyline .
HOLY SHIT!!! Here we go! My older brother had this when I was a kid. Just in time for a 2 hour layover! Thanks Sal 👍🏿😁
The Tuna Melter is an Apex Predator.
32:52 "MY CABBAGES!"
Yessss! I get to watch before work today!
Yay! A back issues that I can listen to while I’m working. I wonder when the last one was. I was starting to get used to uploads after midnight, but this is better, lol.
Same, I'm normally listening after I get home when going to bed.
You guys doing drunk iron man is phenomenal.
Great episode, Back Issues is amazing. By the way Masters of the Universe was originally a comic with the toys, but the show told a completely different story than the comics that came with the figures.
She’ll head may actually be a reference to his first armour where the helmet looked like a mortar ‘Shell’
Thanks for this guys :)
Great episode!
I've been waiting for this story for a long time!! Too sweet, guys!! I've read the entire arc!
god i love the reading of jarvis letter at the end. off to get some coffee
By biggest issue with Iron Man 3 (and I have a few) is about what it should have been. It should've taken from this story and been about Tony's alcoholism. But talking about that wouldn't have been too adult for Disney; and maybe too unsexy for mass audiences that probably don't think very negatively about excessive drinking, unless it leads to behavior that inconveniences them personally.
I've watched upwards of 30 of your videos but the lonely island reference is what gained the sub
"Smokin' hot redhead"...You know anything about that, Sal?
OMG - an A-Team reference! Worth the listen for that.
Drunk Tony Stark Sal is my favorite Sal
I have been waiting 300 episodes for this
@25:25_OMG, that look on Ethan's face, LOL.
Another great video guys. And happy birthday Tiffany!
such a good episode! I just ordered the comicpop hoodie too! I wwanted something a little different and went for the royal blue
I just found out it is Tiffany's birthday. I'm not too late, I hope. Happy birthday 🎂
More drunk Cuzo Sal plz
As a former user of the devil's nectar, I'm a social drinker now, this arc was just fun.
Hope you can do "Five Nightmares" by Matt Fraction, sooner or later as that's a solid story and what I was hoping iron man 3 would have been.
I love the intro
I got a pitch ... iron sal: angel in a coke zero..coming 2021
I was always curious about this story.
3 ComicPOP videos in one day? This is early Christmas.
When the story where green arrow slaps speedy for being an addict and leaves the kid homeless
Demon in a bottle (what would snowflame do)?
mister roboto *snorts cocaine*
(33:00) She's actually Mrs. Arbogast's sister, Uranus.
Now this is top quality content I truly enjoy, lol.
really good drunk ironman impression hahahaha
Besides this story, Armor Wars is a "noteable" Iron Man adventure. Glad you did this one.
That avengers arcade game was legit very Iron man, that's all my memory of 90s Iron man lol. Love this back issues episode
Holy crap, theyre finally doing it!
1:10:40 it was supposedly Dave Cockrum's letter of resignation
this story was really interesting
The greatest story I never read! Hooray!
That should be the slogan for Back Issues, LOL.
Glad to say I actually have read this one thanks to it being in The Ultimate Marvel Graphic Novel Collection :D
This a classic
5:58 hold on, so Tony peeing in the Iron Man suit, that was just from the movie?
This book was my introduction to iron man as a kid lol
Woot! Awesome possum!
Need more iron man on back issues
