  • Off-Roading to Find New Zealand’s Hidden Lupins
Come with us on a 4x4 adventure across New Zealand's landscapes, chasing the lupins that only bloom for about a month each year. We trade our Land Rover Discovery 1 for a Land Rover Defender, diving into off-road challenges with 26 river crossings. Guided by Rob of Soho Expeditions and his Land Rover Defender 110, Rangatira, our adventure unfolds in Arrowtown, Macetown's ghost town, and a hidden lupin field near an abandoned town. Our day is filled with gratitude to Rob, and anticipation for the next off-grid journey. Stay tuned for more off-road adventures in our very own Disco and hidden gems in New Zealand. #4x4 #offroad #landroverdefender110

➤ ABOUT US: Hi! We’re Nick & Raychel, and we want to help people open their eyes to alternative living, whether that be teaching English online, moving to Cambodia, taking advantage of working holiday visas, or building a DIY stealthy camper van to live & work on the road. Nothing is off limits when adventure is the ultimate goal. After three years of living full time van life throught Canada, Mexico and the USA, we're now car camping our way through New Zealand in a Land Rover Discovery 1.
Our goal here is to bring you weekly content where we hope to inspire you to break free & live the life you desire. On this channel, we talk everything from finances to minimalism to working online to mindset and post a weekly vlog of our daily lives. We hope you join us on our journey to see the world, save money, live minimally, and most importantly, have fun.
So if you're looking for a channel about van life, alternative living, and budget travel, you're in the right place.

This video could not have been done without Rob - if you want to go on our own off-grid adventure when visiting/exploring Aotearoa New Zealand, you can find him here: www.sohoexpeditions.co.nz/

I did a road trip from Auckland down to Queenstown and beyond with my goat Masport and my dog Shadow back in 2015/2016. It was an adventure we'd planned for a few years and finally got to do it. I'm used to doing tramping (hiking trips) where youre dropped off by helicopter and we take a few weeks to hike out from remote locations - taking everything with you in your pack (Masport had his own and carried his and Shadows essentials) and rendezvousing at food/supply drop off points to get you through sometimes. Even my goat Masport and Shadow are used to being up in a chopper and its one of the best things about NZ, you can do almost anything you put your mind to - you just have to find the right people like you did finding Rob. This country is amazing, more so when you go off trail and talk to the locals and get them to recommend the hidden gems to you. As a female travelling the country alone with my animals, I luckily had mates in DoC (both Masport & my previous dog Sooty worked for DoC) so we have a few inroads but also talking to local police and always asking for permission (not forgiveness) led to people recommending and providing leads to the next adventure. Locals look after locals and NZ is a small country where everyone knows everyone somehow - it really is not 6 degrees of separation country but more like 2. Local police and DoC rangers found us safe places to stay (in private farms etc) or private huts etc all over NZ...if your respectful and honest, one place will become a reference for another. Kiwi's are a really generous bunch but there are some bad eggs out there too so do be careful. Enjoy the ride and at the end of it you'll have some awesome memories to last you a lifetime. There's a reason people call it 'godzone', this really is an amazing country that offers so much for those that seek it out. Welcome to NZ and if you head north (we're 40mins north of Auckland) and need a place to stay - we have a large farm here and youre welcome to use us as a pit stop for any adventuring up this way. :-)

Driving through that river was awesome. Do you think you'll install an air intake tube like that on your new one to be able to drive in water?

Yea cool spot in there, central Otago was founded by gold miners, 1850 ish I think, landed in Dunedin & gradually worked their way inland
Love the drone shots & lady bug 🐞😁🙏

Amazing video guys! There seems to be some negativity in NZ and abroad that QT is just full of English and Asian tourists and that that somehow makes the place worse. It doesn't. Its an amaaaazing place to live and work, especially if you like getting outdoors. I am a kiwi and I've lived in this area nearly 10 years and its absolutely amazing. I moved here from the Nth Island and have never looked back (I just miss the amazing beaches up north). It can be hard to make friends with the locals - but that is the same almost anywhere you go, anywhere in the world! 4WD and mountain biking would be the best way to meet locals and create bonds so well done picking up on that. Cant wait for you guys to come explore Wanaka. Hike up to Liverpool Hut?
