  • When is the right time to transplant your tree? Are Japanese maples really as finnicky as some might suggest? In this video we'll address those very questions.

This is info I’ve been very curious about. I have a couple planted too close and thought about moving one in a year or two. Thank you!

I have a Ikandi that is in a 3 gallon, it's about 5ft tall and I'm sure it's root bound... I'm waiting til it drops leafs to pull it out for a heavy root prune and up-pot. You think this is wise?

Quick answer: I do think this is wiser than doing it in summer time. Longer answer: A lot of variables to consider. For me, I try to be aware of the rootball sitting in a new container where the roots haven't had a chance to grow into the surrounding media. In warm weather, the root growth is faster and therefor the moisture is absorbed, especially if only going one or two pot sizes up. (The danger is root rot with too much moisture and too much container media without roots!) If you can do it now, when the roots have a window of time to grow into the container mix, I think is best. Likely to get some leaf drop as a result.
