I don’t have these tics but I have a very consistent habit of picking up every tic I see, so I think it’s probably better for me to not watch this video but I hope it educates others!
Back before I was diagnosed, I would have this one where I would " forget " to breathe. Like you say in video, it definitely would start to cause issues.
Thank you so much for posting this. I finally feel like i’m not alone or am totally crazy. I have had the “unable to satisfy a breath” tic for years now and it’s horrible. Also developed “exhaling harshly from the nose” tic. So frustrating
How are you doing now? Did you ever find anything to help? Because I have the same exact things going on. I go back and forth on the unable to get a satisfactory breath and then the harsh exhales through my nose. If it’s not those two then I’m twitching my eye brow. Ever find anything to help?
@@jeffreyspencer2784 To be honest, ever since finding this video and being more self-aware of it, I am occasionally able to ''stop myself''. Although, no it has not gone away completely. And some days are worse than others. I think doing things that distract me and calm me down help. Like yoga, and meditation... but I think the most helpful thing is self-awareness. I opened up and asked my husband to be honest with me and tell me if it was bugging him. He hesitated telling me the truth but eventually told me that it was sometimes hard to constantly hear the tics. That also helped, because I realized that it was affecting other people around me. Anyway, I hope you can find some relief. I know how hard it is... hang in there, you're not alone!
YES! I understand intensely your point with the nose exhalation as it’s also a huge issue with me.. I thought I was the only one. I also do it while exercising which makes it even worse. I feel like I’ll pass out if I continue, but I tend to take deep breaths after so it hopefully won’t affect me too much in the moment
I do this breathing thing where I start to yawn, but then I take a bunch of really fast and tiny breaths when I breathe out. I'm not sure if I actually have tics, but I get the strong urge do that a lot.
Worst breathing tic I had was a gagging tic, dry heaves, was very anxiety induced at the time. It was terrifying but luckily had a cat who sat on top of my chest and calmed me.
That sounds like an awful tic, I'm so sorry to hear that you had to go through that, I had a similar tic a few years ago, that is really sweet that your cat helps. ❤️
I’ve also had breathing tics while simultaneously having “throat” popping tics.. I have a feeling my ppl with tics can relate? But we all have our different struggles. I was just so surprised to see someone else had been going through the same thing as me!😊
I've had breathing tics for a very long time and I've never quite gotten used to them. Sometimes, when they're really bad, I start to get tingly lips and fingers, feel my scalp tingling, and I see those black/blue spots that people often see when they get head-rush from standing up too fast. These tics are off and on for me normally, but being forced to wear masks at work and in public during the current virus stuff sets these tics and many others off terribly because I can't tolerate having my face trapped in the heat of my breath, or tolerate any heat for that matter.
That sounds like you are experiencing some horrible breathing tics that are causing issues. I really hope they pass for you soon and I'm so sorry to hear that the mask sets them off, I can imagine that facemasksbare causing issues for some people as a tic trigger or die to sensory issues, it sounds incredibly frustrating. I hope that tic passes as those sorts of tics are horrible, I am here if you ever want to talk. 💜
I have a breath holding and a sniffling tic and they’re causing shortness of breath and tingling sometimes. I wish the sniffling would stop. It’s REALLY bad. I do it over a dozen times a minute almost all day.
@Brandi Legg I have dealt with the same thing the past 30 years or so. Mine seems to be triggered more when I am stressed. Have you found anything that helps? I've tried therapy through NOCD, but didn't find the Exposure response therapy helpful.
I started new medication that’s kicked up old tics, and the breathing one is absolutely my least favorite. Just like you said, I feel like I’m drowning even though I’m constantly breathing heavily. It’s been about a week since it really set in, and I have constant back and chest pain from trying to take the deepest breaths possible, and as a cherry on top, it’s often followed by a painful tic where I tighten my muscles around the area of my diaphragm. I want this to stop so badly.
I have lost of irittaring motor and vocal tics, but I have breathing tics where I hold my breath, or breathe in a certain way that can sometimes make me choke or get dizzy and I didn't know that breathing tics were this common. Thank you.
I have an tic where i exhale really harshly through my nose and it always makes it hard to breathe afterwards especially on bad days. It feels good to know i wasnt just experiencing a tic like this alone and that other people have similar experiences.
I have this exact same tic! I haven’t seen many people with the same one, so it’s comforting to know we are not alone :) it’s honestly a very annoying tic, and it leaves you out of breath. I also feel like I might get a nosebleed sometimes from the force I use to push the air through my nose 😓
@@chamazombie3 i hope you’re able to overcome this tic soon :( it’s super annoying. I also had the same chest feeling after too. I don’t have this tic often anymore but I now have a habit of knocking on my head. I also sort of have the blinking one but it’s more to do with smiling. Sorry for saying all this, it just feels nice to tell someone about tics. I hope yours get better soon
My breathing tic started since covid started, hearing everything about difficulty of breath triggered my anxiety and when I think about it or I’m not focusing on an activity that’s when it acts up so luckily I’m able to workout and play sports like cheer which takes a lot out of you so I’m so glad that I’m able to do what I love:)
Hello, I found this video after doing a google search on breathing tics. One of my worst tics is sniffling, they usually happen in bursts and can cause much discomfort since I don’t have enough time to breathe due to the rapid repeating inhalations. This causes further stress and anxiety which just makes it worse. These tics give me mild chest pain, dry out my nose, and cause acid reflux. They’re usually triggered by a runny nose caused by cold weather or allergy seasons
Its like you discribing me in your video!😱 i have this feeling in my chest, that i can’t breath kinda deep, or struggeling with my breath, so i take like deep breath’s- like take air deep down my lungs before i breathe out again. have always thought it was something wrong with my lungs or something🙈 So thank you for that information! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Parden my english, im from Norway😊
YESS! So glad I can relate to someone, it almost makes me cry😢 I’ve had them for so long that I don’t even bother getting help but I do notice them. I feel like I’m ruining my lungs and depriving myself of oxygen..
For over a year now I’ve had a continuous urge to take satisfying deep breaths. When I get the deep breath it gives me temporary relief but then the urge comes back a few minutes later. When I can’t get the deep breath then it feels like I’m short of breath and then I end up panicking.
@@lisacecilia6934 It’s horrible, isn’t it? I used to have it as a child but it must have gone away because I didn’t have it for years, but then it came back in 2019 and I have no idea why.
I have the same issue. I inhale with a deep breath, lift my head up as it stretches my neck to take the breath. I 100 percent feel like I either have lung issues, COPD, or I'm just crazy. This has been slowly happening for a bout a year now. I did worry with covid bc I was terrified I would have breathing issues if I caught covid ( which I did ) after the tic started happening. Also, It started around the beginning of a stressful year. Its not constant and do notice if my mind is busy i don't do it, if I focus on it, its out of control and I can easily spiral into a panic attack.
@@stephaniemckown so I go back and forth with not being able to take a deep satisfactory breathe and exhaling out of my nose multiple times in a row like really fast little exhales but I freaked myself out so much and said let’s just go get checked out so I went and my lungs were fine and the X-rays were fine and the specialist said everything was fine but the moral of it is if it’s freaking you out go get checked! But I had the same worries as you and I was fine just tics and anxiety! Don’t freak yourself out just try and focus on breathing. I know it’s scary but getting checked out helped me a lot I’d spend whatever amount of money I need to for my own peace of mind of course I still freak myself out but at least I’m not worrying about lung issues or copd! I’m sure you’re fine! And finding this video and comments from all these lovely people going through the same thing has made me feel a lot better too!
Very important thing to discuss. I guess you would call it a sub-issue as it’s one of many within the tic disorder community but this pertains to me as breathing tics have been my whole life. Lightheaded feelings, unable to breathe well because the muscles have been under so much stress over the past 12/16 years of my life. When I focused on it and tried to force it to see if I could “satisfy the urge” it just got worse and I had to go to the hospital so they could put me to sleep so I could give my body a break. That was before my diagnosis of Tourette’s and while the tics are still here in full force I get through each day being happy, knowing that it isn’t my fault and that I can look forward to the next time when the feeling isn’t as bad. Truly a debilitating side of tic disorders and it’s something I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy
I’ve just been introduced to tics. I haven’t realized that I’ve been dealing with tics my whole life almost. I don’t know if I have a breathing tic, or some sort of other physical health issue, but I keep sharply gasping for air. It feels like it may be a tic but I’m not sure and really am scared I’m just faking it all. Thank you so much for your information though, I appreciate it a lot
My daughter has been doing like a quickly breathing in (without breathing out) constantly and she said its starting to annoy her now, she's had different ones for the past 2yrs now started with eyebrows, mouth movements and she also has had a neck jerk a few times and also does a sound now and then, i love to learn about all this so i know and understand
i had a tic attack for the first time last night. my arm would raise, head go down, and i literally could not breathe when it was happening. I called my sibling in when i could breathe and i told them to get our parents cause i couldnt breathe. we went to the er and this thing lasted for hours, it was so fucking scary. i was crying and exhausted, i just wanted to sleep but i couldnt. im glad it eventually stopped
Hello, I like your videos. I'm in my late 20's and I had ticks all my life. Breathing tics are one of them. Now it is some breathing tics, moving my scapula (shoulder) up and down, round and "stretching" my neck from side to side. It is annoying, but not as bad as it used to be in the past. I believe one of the most important, if not the most important, is diet. Eating high carbohydrate (sugar) food makes it worse. Also of course environmental stress factors. Also coffee makes tics worse. I do not drink that anymore. Alcohol and all kinds of narcotics too. There's nothing more precious than health. I wish all of you lots of success and happiness on your journey.
When I was a kid, whenever I would enter a room I would have to take a deep breathe and let out short exhales while visualizing a line connecting each of the doors and windows of the room together in kind of a spiderweb sort of way, each exhale connect another window to the last and so on until I had gone around the entire space. Once in a great while I still do it but very rarely. Rooms with a lot of openings would be difficult trying to connect everything with one breathe and only feeling like I can exhale until finished. Also on drives I would have to exhale when lamp posts would pass my window. Those are/were my breathing tics. Thank you for the videos.
Watching your videos is making me realize how long I’ve been having minor/unnoticeable tics my entire life. I was just going thru a breathing tic the other night and I just needed to clench my diaphragm or squeeze my gut muscles. I cried because I felt crazy, I was hoping I was a hypochondriac. Holding my breath feels good tho... not sure if that’s bad
That sounds like an intense breathing tic, and I know what you mean by it feeling good as it gives relief from the sensation when you et the tic out and can be satisfying. :) I also totally get what you mean about sometimes having minor tics and not noticing, sometimes I don't even notice when I have things like eye tics.
Thanks so much for the video. I have a breathing tic where I feel like I can’t get my breath then I breathe in and then tic full force. I have a barking tic when I start barking like a dog. Sometimes I hold my breath as well then all of a sudden the tic comes out loud full force. I’ve got a lot of other tics as well. The video is great and I enjoyed watching it
Thanks for the vid - I'm recently diagnosed with tourettes (ironically didnt realise the breathing was part of it but finally put 2 and 2 together thanks to your video!!) You're right that because they aren't visible, people miss out/exclude them. Used to have mostly facial tics but 'moved' them to my diaphragm because they are less visible - kinda hard tho bc it interferes with my already bad stutter, makes me really out of breath - i'd try to squeeze every word out in 1-2 seconds with the last remnants of my breath... it's gotten better with improving anxiety & speech therapy, but the erratic breathing still triggers the stutter & puts me back to square one. (ironically now the facial tics have come back as well, lmao 😬) not all bad though - its a step in the right direction, at least now i have a name/reason for why i tic. trying a combination of therapy and meds, will keep fighting! Thanks again for video, was v helpful!
Thank you! I'm always here if you ever want to talk, and yes in the beginning I didn't realise some things were a breathing tic but it makes sense when you can put a name to it and can also be quite relieving as we know what it is then. That does sound frustrating that your tics make your stutter worse, I hope that it gets easier for you soon and that things can help if it causes problems. 💚
I cant believe I found a video on something I've been so stressed about doing. I've beenade fun of or people ask me what the heck am I doing? I just can't stop my breathing tics and it has raised my blood pressure. Thank you for this great information. I think Im going to talk to my neurosurgeon because they have gotten so bad
I had a thing that I would do with breathing and the seeing this video helped me find out that I have a breathing tic because most of the this she said is something that I would do
I’m 45, I’ve dealt with tics of all sorts, but I’ve never had a diagnosis. Right now I’m doing this thing where I exhale hard t through my nose. Which makes me feel short of breath.
This was very helpful i have this tic when im excited i jerk my head forward and hold my breath for a short moment and i didn't know if it was a tic or not
I have one tic, that is H o r r i b l e. It's one where I just keep Inhaling 5 times in a row and BOY it's annoying. I'm not diagnosed with Tourette's, but this is my first Vocal tic; and my parents nor sister don't believe I have tics, so I always need to hold them in when I'm with my family
I'm really sorry that you need to hold them in, that must be very uncomfortable , I hope that your family can be more understanding soon , have you ever given them any resources? I can send you some if they would be interested in learning more. Breathing tics are awful, i hope it passes for you soon , I'm here if you want to talk and hopefully you can get a formal diagnosis one day, a neurologist is usually the best bet.
i feel you one of my main tics is gasping constantly and once i was in the cinemark and everything was super loud and made my breathing tic worse i couldn’t breathe and i was so scared and sadly we had to leave:/ i completely understand ugh the struggle
I feel as if i either have sensorimotor ocd or breathing tics. I feel as if i have to take each breath manually because of the urge to breath. Thing is i have this 24 7 nothing i do takes my mind off it. Have had this solid for 1 year. Now ive seen this im not sure its sensorimotor ocd. I dont feel any anxiety symptoms ie racing heart feeling uneasy etc just cant sleep because i have this constant uege to breath in. Not a deep breath just a normal breath
All the girls in my family have Tourette’s, my mom has a fluttering tics, etc. idk if I have tics but sometimes I hold my breath and forget, or I breath in as if I could not breath and it makes a sound once I do. And I get a shaking thing where one min I’ll be fine and the next my eyes roll for a min and my head shakes for a second after. I’m tempted to ask my mom to take me. These incidents are rare.
Mine is inhaling. Its usually when i get stressed, or have alot on my mind, or when im trying to relax. Either i will take a sudden breath, almost like a gasp. Other times its a burst of little breaths in. But exhaling im fine. Sometimes i scare people with them, cause ill gasp, and they think something is wrong. When my anxiety kicks in, i fell like i cant catch my breath. So i have learned to raise my arms, or lean against something solid, to open up my chest cavity, and i then can take a full breath. Definitely frustrating!
i’m having a really bad breathing tics right now and they started years ago, i have ocd and knowing how i was breathing made me uncomfortable and i eventually developed tics and the only tics that i have badly 1) i lean over and stretch one side of my stomach/side and then exhale and inhale really fast and when heard it can sound like an airy laugh 2) i keep stretching or contracting the muscles in my throat which makes me feel unable to breathe fully especially when i keep doing it 3) i stretch out my throat muscles and point my head down 4) i contract my throat in and it can make a weird squeaky noise 5) i breathe out and move my tongue so from within my throat it can create a whistle like noise i think the only other tic i have is the need to stretch muscles around my body especially the arms/wrists, stomach area and upper legs and knees and ankles but i’ve never been able to be diagnosed with a tic disorder
also the worst part is i have not been diagnosed either but since i was 10 i have been getting so dizzy everyday to the point where i would be on edge constantly thinking i was going to faint but i never did (and never want to) and that lasted until last year where it’s gotten better but still happens and turns out a lot of the PoTS symptoms i have experienced so the breathing tics don’t make that any easier 😭😭
Thanks for the good video! I have this tic where I think I'm breathing normally but then I'm out of air. It is quite annoying because at that moment I don't know what to change, it is like I "don't know" how to breathe normally. It really is weird.
Can you cover breathing tics on your channel Rosario please? Also, if you have any tips for help. Or if you can research what other people find useful. We love your channel.
I'm glad i found something on this I've been dealing with this since like 2018 and its alot of different things my main one is exhaling alot and god it makes my head hurt to a point where i can't function alot and gives me episode of migraine with aura and it messes with my short term memory i think over the years its done damage i need to bring this up to a doctor from time to time my breathing is normal but when its triggered its hard to stop it and when i get under alot of stress it can really trigger it
Every since I could remember I would do this thing where I sniffle I’m not sick or have a stuffy nose. Doctors would say that I have year round allergies. The past few years it get so bad that I end up pulling a muscle in my chest when u pull a muscle in your chest it hurts to breath in .So then I’m more conscious of my sniffling but I can’t stop!!!! I am 30 now and I know this is not allergies.
I'm having a tic where I like close my throat, and force an inhale through it, which causes like a squeaking sound. Ill do this repetitively and to different extremes. It freaks me out. It leads into feeling like I cant get a satisfying deep breath which leads to unsuccessful yawning. However the squeaking thing is the worst. It hurts my throat after a while. If you want an idea of what it feels/sounds like, try closing your mouth and inhaling through your nose and humming. Like an inward hum. As your doing this inward hum, close off your throat so the hum goes up in pitch and becomes just a squeak. If you can manage to do that, that is what I experience. Now do it quickly and repetitively, while increasing the intensity. Thats the best way I know how to explain it. I sometimes feel like its physiological rather than mental, but I've gone to a doctor for it and they say they cant figure out anything wrong. I'm not overly anxious right now except for that caused by the tic... I went through a period of about a month or so where it was very minor. In the last few days it has come back severely. Ill even tic when gaming or just relaxing. It does seem to supress when I'm focused on something else but not all the time... I just dont know what to do. It is driving me crazy!!!
people think I am sighing or laughing at them if they are talking and not looking at me and I, every so often, take a loud intake and out take of breath. If they look at me then they can see that it is a tick as my neck and face tences. A sigh i usually a more relaxed and lower sounding breath. I can go months without doing it but then if I am stressed it can last for weeks.
Never remitted, I have horrible breathing tics with throat clearing. I can't breathe until I clear my throat through my nose an undisclosed amount of time, then I gasp for breath and it starts all over again. While this happens I'm snapping my fingers. It totally immobilizes me. Can't do anything. I wish it would stop and switch to something else.
I’ve had breathing tics and many other tics for about 5 years, my mom and my doctor just tell me to stop doing it. I thought at least my doctor would understand but she tells me the exact same thing every year. It’s extremely frustrating and embarrassing.
Hi just here looking for ways to deal with my tics . Not been diagnosed but lately it's really not been pleasant at all . Interesting never knew breathing tics are there . Something to beware of . My tics nothing helps till it passes . Thank you for your video very helpful
I actually had some questions involving this subject so if anyone’s still in the comment section and can shed some light on my situation I’d love to hear it. I’ve had breathing tics for a long time. I commented on this video about a year ago because they are my main tics. I’ve had an “unable to satisfy the breath” tic that put me in the hospital before I knew it was Tourette’s. My first breathing tic was brief heaving through my nose or mouth. I would heave so hard that I couldn’t breathe. For the past couple years however, I’ve been confused as to weather or not they are still tics or it’s just my body being used to the movements to the point where I can’t stop. I constantly have doubts weather or not I’m being over dramatic which I know is stupid but it’s just how I feel. Instead of the usually tics, like being unable to satisfy the breath or heaving, I now just go through periods where it feels difficult to breath. I can’t tell exactly but it doesn’t feel like there’s an urge behind it. I kind of feels like when I had an upper-respiratory infection. I’m pretty sure the pure inability to breath well for periods of time is not a tics, but if I’m wrong then please let me know. I still experience tics. Some come only when I’m standing for long periods of time, and others only occur when I invest large amounts of sugar, but I can’t help but feel like my breathing tics have gone, and what’s left is my body, and the years of having to do specific movements in my diaphragm. TLDR, I believe my breathing tics have gone, but the movements have stayed because my body is used to it. I honestly can’t tell
I’ve never had tics before, but this year developed something that I’m wondering if is a breathing tic or a muscle spasm in my chest. I suddenly breathe deep with no warning causing jerky gasps breaths at the end. Then it’s over- usually a few times a day. I feel strange bringing it up to my doctor since it’s the only thing but it’s happening more and more- after seeing this, I feel like I probably should.
I blow all my air out of my nose with a like double exhale. It cramps my chest and hurts sometimes so I try to be mindful to stop. I used to clench my core and do the same sort of a few years ago, but it went away
I am 17 and I have this tic for more than 2 months now where I forcefully exhale through my nose a couple times in a row. Sometimes I twitch the muscles in my arms, shoulders and face, and every time I try to make it symmetrical. I also have a skin picking disorder for 2 years now, so I wonder if I have tourret syndrome and ocd, but I'm critical of self-diagnosing it, but also have 0 courage to ask for help about it.
It does sound like there's some OCD traits, possibly not full OCD but a lot of people with tics also have Obsessive Compulsive Behaviour. Skin picking disorders are part of the OCD spectrum. It is extremely common for OCD to come along with Tourette’s and PANS/PANDAS.
@@ChronicAdvocate I actually didn't have any idea about PANS/PANDAS, thanks for making me aware of that. From a young age I make patterns in my head, do things in rounds of six, and lately have been rechecking if the taps are closed, and stuff. I also hoard things, to a point where my study area becomes inaccessible...
Up until maybe a week ago I thought I only had motor tics. (I’ve had those for about two years?) but I just started to have a tic where in combination with a motor tic I exhale from my nose really quickly. I’ve been worried that this means I necessarily have tourette’s (vocal tics are one of my greatest fears ngl) but I didn’t realise that holding your breath could be a tic and counts as a vocal tic. I just hope it doesn’t get worse.
I am not sure if this is what I have but I have a tic where I strain my throat but kind of “sucking in” and then straining my chest and it’s absolutely horrible, it makes me lightheaded and I don’t know what to do
for the last two or three years i have picked up this habit of either sniffling or breathing in while making a sound every once and a while, then theres the part where i try to take a deep breath of air but feel like i can't get it all the way so i yawn in order to take that deep breath of air
This is really helpful . Owen my son has breathing tics and actually does at present. He gets dizzy at times and really frustrated because he cant reply while he's doing it . Great video x
@@brookecue1974 hello, did he ever get over it? I know this comment is old but just thought i’d ask. My daughter is 7 and has a breathing tic now and she’s saying it’s bothering her real bad, it makes me so upset that I can’t do anything when it happens 😔
I’ve been struggling with this for some time, I feel like I’m struggling to breathe a lot of the time. If not all of the time. My chest would constantly feel tight and I thought I had asthma but I don’t. I get motor tics as well especially when I’m anxious. Makes it hard to do anything and I get embarrassed if someone sees my tics. Do you have any tips on how to deal with them? It’s also really hard for me to even focus on anything, even as little as a watching a film. Hope you’re well anyway xx
Breathing tics can sometimes be difficult to deal with but I was once told by a tourette's consultant that if you can get someone to place 2 fingers each side of your spine in a V shape and then go up and down the spine it can help some people with certain breathing tics. The ones you are describing are horrible where it just feels like a pressure and like you can't breath. Some people find that doing an activity such as singing can reduce tics, I'm not sure if that would help at all or exacerbate it. I really hope that it passes for you soon. 💚
@@ChronicAdvocate that’s awesome thank you for sharing that with me!!! I’m actually a musician haha, I’m not that good but this is why I’ve got my CZcams account up :) singing does help but sometimes when I am very very anxious i got caught up and sort of go into a panic attack xxx
Just pray that you never get AKATHISIA.. Ugh.. AKA restless leg syndrome.. Some people with Tourette's or other neurological issues like ADD/ADHD and Parkinson's also deal with restless legs/limbs sometimes.. It's like this naggy anxious itchy feeling that starts to radiate from your limbs, and it makes you feel like you need to move, shake, or jerk around to get rid of the feeling,, The worst part is, when you shake the feeling off, it just starts coming right back within seconds....
Ah I've heard of that, apparently it is awful and can be a waking nightmare. It can also sometimes be a symptom of PANS/PANDAS. If you have that then I hope it can be managed and reduce soon. 💜
im devastated i can barely breathe and its quick breath outs through the nose but pushing it out it needs to feel right when doing it which doesnt ever so in a day its like 300 or more times
Currently ticking out at the moment but yeah I'd breathe in and out like I'm hyperventilating, and I might "forget" to breathe, because I'm trying to force myself to stop ticking and in the split moment of relief, I forget to breathe 😂 and then I hold it for no reason, and all of that can cause me to hyperventilate and get numb everywhere and its very hard to try and focus on something else when it happens 😔
Is there anyway to ease these tics? I hate them! Any advice/tips would be extremely helpful! Btw: thank you for finally talking about these types of tics. They are never really talked about, so you can think something is wrong and focus on it more, and that leads to even more tics. The ways I have found to help are not having a focus in it, and even though it's hard, try to not let them take control or panic. But I would really, really love to have some more guidance with anything that can help.
Hey there! These types of tics are horrible, some people say that distraction helps - focusing on something and getting so absorbed that the attention goes away from the tic, it'll usually have to be something that takes a lot of focus or that you are really interested in. One thing I was informed about from someone else was something called the two finger spinal massage. It's where you use your index and middle finger and put them at either side of the person's spine, thi means you fingers will be in a v shape, and then they go down from the neck to the waistline and repeat that up and down for about 3 times. If its don't over a shirt it's just important to make sure the fabric is tight so that it doesn't move. This is said to calm the nervous system and reduce breathing tics if you can find someone to do it for you. When you have a bad episode of breathing tics just be sure to take it easy, I founf that it got worse in times of sensory over stimulation or stress so when this happens it is important to take a break where you don't need to do anything to see if it can help you calm, and also prevent issues from the light-headedness that can occur from breathing tics. I hope this helps!
I thought I had Dystonia and Vocal Cord Dysfunction for years and years, and while we still haven't figured out what is causing my breathing issues, I was just diagnosed by a Neurologist with Tourette's Syndrome. I am taking Clonidine low dose 1/day for 2 weeks and then 2/day for the next two. I've only taken it for 2 days, so I don't expect much yet. However, I am still baffled by the breathing issue. So it basically feels like I can't get enough air in. My throat gets tight and if it gets bad, I do the pursed/duck lip breathing so I don't panic and hyperventilate and I know my O2 levels are fine, so that's a relief. After an attempt or few, I am able to finally get a full gulp of air or sometimes yawning helps and then it gets better. And then the sensation comes back shortly after. This started in 2013 after I inhaled pressure treated lumber and from 2015-2021, it was happening only during exercise or bad air days, strong smells, etc... So you can see why I thought it was VCD. but then it started happening continuously again in November, 2021 until now. My Laryngoscopy showed normal vocal cord movement. I have noticed that if I am extremely focused on something, I don't feel it as much or at all. It's also not as bad while laying down. Is this a tic? could it be? Because it's weird tic and if it is, I wonder if I could retrain my brain to not do this anymore? Luckily I don't have the breathing tics y'all mentioned but sometimes I do feel like I hold my breath. so I put my hand on my stomach to see if my diaphragm is moving.
I used to do this breathing that mostly everyone could here where it didn’t let me breath normally so I had to breath out loud and it sounded like “HEH” every time but I don’t think it was tics because my room was the problem of it because every time I go there I feel something and start breathing weirdly and in the morning my nose is just stuffed up
Was there mould in your room by any chance? Mould can hide on window frames, and behind furniture. It's very common and can be made worse by damp. Mould can trigger tics for some people, it has fuelled some of mine. It can also make your nose quite stuffy.
@@ChronicAdvocate it probably was because my parents said it might be mould because when they would go in the room too they would also feel what I feel
Yes it likely is, hopefully it can get cleaned up. Mould can trigger immune dysregulation as well as neurological and psychiatric symptoms so it's best to get it sorted.
I had loads of different tics in the past now I have this breathing one where it feels like something in my chest and I inhale really hard and forcely exhale, my chest hurts and also I jolt my neck at times 😞 will it ever get easier?
It can get easier 💚 tics can change all the time so hopefully this one will pass and there are also many ways to manage tics, looking for your tic triggers may help. 💜
😢 I can't stand it! I normally have muscle tics but within the last few weeks I cannot catch a good breath, can't clear my throat and have a hard time swallowing. I cannot stand it anymore. How can I make them stop?! Please someone help me? The last year or so I've tensed my right side none stop. It's physically visible. My right peck is way more defined than my left.
I just recently had a breathing tic start. I hold my breath and have to forcefully exhale at what feels like the right time. If I don't do it at the right time it feels wrong and doesn't feel like I'm breathing right. It's very frustrating and focusing on it all the time makes me very anxious. It first started when I upped my Vyvanse dosage, and it went away after a little while but came back way worse a couple days ago. Taking deliberate deep breaths helps to soothe it for a little while but it keeps coming back. I've always had nervous habits but I never associated them with tics, and I'm not sure if this is something completely new or if I've always had tics and I just didn't recognize it. Can you develop tics for the first time in your mid 20s?
I developed one where I hold my breath too then exhale in stutters, like my lungs being jolted, and I have to do it at the right time also. It’s like I’m getting all the air out of my lungs. I try to control it but I can be talking/listening to someone and I’ll pause before speaking sometimes because my lungs want to do their little stutter before I speak. I feel so weird for it and have no idea what caused it to develop... Asthma as a kid, mask wearing, epilepsy? Prob not but idk. But it’s so frustrating
For me thankfully the breathing tics just passed on their own. Certain tics can pass with time and may be replaced by other ones. For almost 2 years my tics were made virtually non-existent by eliminating my tic triggers. Some people see a functional medicine doctor or environmental physician to find their tic triggers but I got help from a workshop about it at a Tourette’s event. The book "Stop Your Tics By Learning What Triggers Them" By Sheila Rogers Demare talks a lot about tic triggers.
@@ChronicAdvocate tyvm, many ppl like myself have no idea that breathing tics exist, I thought I had a disease or anxiety and panic disorder, ty for that video
I do this thing where I have to stop breathing and then blink a lot in order for a sensation. sometimes I stop breathing for a long time because it gets hard to get the sensation. don't know if it is a tic tho edit: commented before watching the video, I guess it's a tic, been doing it for either months or couple years. don't remember.

I don’t have these tics but I have a very consistent habit of picking up every tic I see, so I think it’s probably better for me to not watch this video but I hope it educates others!
Yeah same, when I see or hear others tic then I pick it up or I repeat it whenever someone says it.
Back before I was diagnosed, I would have this one where I would " forget " to breathe. Like you say in video, it definitely would start to cause issues.
i’m not diagnosed but i will have certain tics come and go, for like a week i kept on forgetting to breath and it was really frustrating!!
i’ve had this happen to me a lot throughout my life
this one, especially when i tried to fall asleep
@@juliav7604 I get this too-
Yes it's really scary I would wake myself up from "forgetting" to breathe
I have one minor breathing tic. Just breathing our basically
I do this breathing thing where I start to yawn, but then I take a bunch of really fast and tiny breaths when I breathe out. I'm not sure if I actually have tics, but I get the strong urge do that a lot.
That’s a tic that I have
I do this too. It happens a lot to me
I have a tic now where I Sniff a lot hard
And twitching in my face keep me up at night
I have the sniffing tic and everyone thinks I’m getting sick. I’ve started breath holding now and I get tingly sometimes
I do this if I take a really big breath in.
My cat helped me this morning the purring sensation helped the aggressive feeling in my neck and chest ❤
Her: be cautious you may pick these up
Me: Already having breathing/vocal tics and motor tics
I've had tourette syndrome since I was abt 1:)
This just reminded me of one of my tics where I dig my rib into my side and it’s painful! But it just feels so unsatisfiable so I keep doing it.
Yo. This helped me so much. I was crying all morning about this. It doesn't fox it, but i dont feel crazy anymore.
I have lost of irittaring motor and vocal tics, but I have breathing tics where I hold my breath, or breathe in a certain way that can sometimes make me choke or get dizzy and I didn't know that breathing tics were this common. Thank you.
I just had my first breathing tic and it scared me and started a panic attack which made it worse. I thought I was dying for a second, it hurt so bad
Should have listened to the warning- I got my breathing tic back.
*yay*
I really hope it passes for you soon ❤️
I have an tic where i exhale really harshly through my nose and it always makes it hard to breathe afterwards especially on bad days. It feels good to know i wasnt just experiencing a tic like this alone and that other people have similar experiences.
I have this exact same tic! I haven’t seen many people with the same one, so it’s comforting to know we are not alone :) it’s honestly a very annoying tic, and it leaves you out of breath. I also feel like I might get a nosebleed sometimes from the force I use to push the air through my nose 😓
@@lilyxxxxxx7146 Yeah I feel the same! Its always a pain honestly
I am having this exact same tic for 2 months now, and it's so frustrating😔
@@chamazombie3 i hope you’re able to overcome this tic soon :( it’s super annoying. I also had the same chest feeling after too. I hate my breathing tics there awful
They are awful, I hope they ease 💙
are they dangerous? i am so scared because i have them
Thank you for talking about breathing tics. I feel less alone now.
Really interesting, I’m so glad I don’t suffer with this type of tic. Thanks for the info.
My tics are caused by TD. Your video was very helpful in explaining how I feel. I was able to express how I feel with this
Its like you discribing me in your video!😱 i have this feeling in my chest, that i can’t breath kinda deep, or struggeling with my breath, so i take like deep breath’s- like take air deep down my lungs before i breathe out again. have always thought it was something wrong with my lungs or something🙈
So thank you for that information! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Parden my english, im from Norway😊
i have this breathing tic where it feels like i can’t get a deep breath / i’m gonna stop breathing. this made me feel less alone, thank you
i have a tic where i just constantly have to yawn sometimes so much i can barely breathe. loved the video!
Same here. How do you find you get around this?
YESS! So glad I can relate to someone, it almost makes me cry😢 I’ve had them for so long that I don’t even bother getting help but I do notice them. I feel like I’m ruining my lungs and depriving myself of oxygen..
I don't know if this is a tic, but every now and then I automatically take a deep breath without even wanting to
Is it like a physical urge? I feel the urge to take full, satisfying deep breaths every few minutes.
I get a strong physical urge before tics, including the breathing ones. 💙
For over a year now I’ve had a continuous urge to take satisfying deep breaths. When I get the deep breath it gives me temporary relief but then the urge comes back a few minutes later. When I can’t get the deep breath then it feels like I’m short of breath and then I end up panicking.
This is exactly what I have, and for over a year too.
@@lisacecilia6934 It’s horrible, isn’t it? I used to have it as a child but it must have gone away because I didn’t have it for years, but then it came back in 2019 and I have no idea why.
@@lisacecilia6934 Hi, are you still having this issue?
Sometimes I look up and breath in a lot then look down slowly exhale- and I I don’t know what to make of it-
NO WAY I HAVE THAT EXACT TWITCH!! although I’m not diagnosed with any tic disorder yet
i had a tic attack for the first time last night. my arm would raise, head go down, and i literally could not breathe when it was happening.
My daughter is only five and has breathing ticks. It’s so scary sometimes to watch and listen. Thank you for this video.
Yesss these are my least favourite tics
(ironically now the facial tics have come back as well, lmao 😬)
not all bad though - its a step in the right direction, at least now i have a name/reason for why i tic. trying a combination of therapy and meds, will keep fighting!
I hope you can get the help you need!
Stumbled upon this video when my 3.5 year old son started making this flimy exhale noise. He has never been diagnosed with anything.

I have that too!
I have a sniffling tic and it happens atleast a dozen times a minute. It’s awful
Yep i definitely have this, I’ve had it for a while thank you for this
omg i had that sensation thing i thought i had asthma or something thank you
i felt like i needed to take a better breath each time and it sometimes took hours to get an acceptable breath
That definitely sounds like a breathing tic 💜
So I was watching youtube and I was having all of these problems, especially the breathing out fast one
Definitely frustrating!
i’m having a really bad breathing tics right now and they started years ago, i have ocd and knowing how i was breathing made me uncomfortable and i eventually developed tics and the only tics that i have badly
1) i lean over and stretch one side of my stomach/side and then exhale and inhale really fast and when heard it can sound like an airy laugh
2) i keep stretching or contracting the muscles in my throat which makes me feel unable to breathe fully especially when i keep doing it
3) i stretch out my throat muscles and point my head down
4) i contract my throat in and it can make a weird squeaky noise
5) i breathe out and move my tongue so from within my throat it can create a whistle like noise
i think the only other tic i have is the need to stretch muscles around my body especially the arms/wrists, stomach area and upper legs and knees and ankles but i’ve never been able to be diagnosed with a tic disorder
also the worst part is i have not been diagnosed either but since i was 10 i have been getting so dizzy everyday to the point where i would be on edge constantly thinking i was going to faint but i never did (and never want to) and that lasted until last year where it’s gotten better but still happens and turns out a lot of the PoTS symptoms i have experienced so the breathing tics don’t make that any easier 😭😭
This is a great video
Thanks for the good video!

That is very frustrating, no one would choose to have breathing tics, I'm sorry that you have gone through that.
I have them and are getting diagonosed hopefully Friday
I’ve never had tics before, but this year developed something that I’m wondering if is a breathing tic or a muscle spasm in my chest. I suddenly breathe deep with no warning causing jerky gasps breaths at the end. Then it’s over- usually a few times a day. I feel strange bringing it up to my doctor since it’s the only thing but it’s happening more and more- after seeing this, I feel like I probably should.
I had a breathing tic where I would tense my throat and I was the most annoying thing ever
i used to have that too and sometimes it would even cause sharp pains because of the excessive tension
What helps?
I blow all my air out of my nose with a like double exhale. It cramps my chest and hurts sometimes so I try to be mindful to stop. I used to clench my core and do the same sort of a few years ago, but it went away
Wow, this has happened to me, thought I was gonna die. This was before my official diagnosis....
That must have been terrifying
@@ChronicAdvocate absolutely, I know exactly what this, comes with extreme stress!!
I developed a breathing tic yesterday because me sister was sick and sniffling and now I keep sniffling and breathing in intensely.
That’s kinda what started my sniffling tic. I was sick and was doing it and it hasn’t stopped in a couple years. Before that I had a coughing tic
My breathing tic is like taking 2 quick breaths then exhale but still kinda like holding back
I have the holding my breath tic and it triggers my asthma sometimes.
Many of those things do sound like OCD traits 💜
So amazing information 👏
This is really helpful . Owen my son has breathing tics and actually does at present. He gets dizzy at times and really frustrated because he cant reply while he's doing it . Great video x
I hope it passes for Owen soon 💚 breathing tics are horrible, thank you for watching the video 💙
Carlygardner is their any way you can email I would like to talk to you my son is 6 and just developed this tic and I’m freaking !
Anyone see her pfp?
Hey i know the feeling I have this breathing tic bcuz my anxiety, i inhale hard and tense my chest and it's always on my mind
@@martinlewis9164 same! Sorry to hear this, what helps you to cope with anxiety? X
That is so awesome that you are a musician! 😃
I was wondering when you have your breathing Tics do they feel like really deep yawns??
That can do yes! That's a great question ❤️
@@ChronicAdvocate That's how mine are
Just pray that you never get AKATHISIA..
I just developed a breathing tic were I breath in the out and in and out like really fast and its really annoying and leaves me breathless
I have a nose breathing tic. It annoys everyone around me
The sniffling?
i didn’t know this was a tic omg i’ve been doing this forever and i have ocd- i’m just discovering tocd
im devastated i can barely breathe and its quick breath outs through the nose but pushing it out it needs to feel right when doing it which doesnt ever so in a day its like 300 or more times
Idk if this is necessarily a tic but i basically but i am calm hyperventilate and can never reach the top my lungs
I have a breaking tic where I exhale really hard and just try to focus on something else I tried playing games and they stop
I have a breathing tic it’s where I breathe in focely
@@ChronicAdvocate Thank you so much for this information! I will start cleaning my room and checking the window frames and furniture.
I have the right the same tic but i also have jaw tics and lip tics.
Wow thank you so much god bless you hope your doing ok ❤
How did you cure the breathing tic? Where you can't get satisfying breaths
I do this thing where I have to stop breathing and then blink a lot in order for a sensation. sometimes I stop breathing for a long time because it gets hard to get the sensation. don't know if it is a tic tho
edit: commented before watching the video, I guess it's a tic, been doing it for either months or couple years. don't remember.
