Sensorimotor OCD, like many other types of OCD, can be complicated, confusing, and debilitating. Imagine if you noticed every heartbeat you had, every breath, or every time you blinked. I don't mean just noticing it; I mean, it is forced into your awareness ALL DAY. Could you hold a conversation, could you watch tv, could you go to work? These are all scenarios individuals may struggle in when they suffer from this type of OCD. Let's go through what sensorimotor OCD is and what the treatment looks like.

      @MR-pg6ru Před 3 lety +2

Yep. Pretty sure I definitely have this and have always had this. You’ve mentioned a number of ones I hadn’t even known counted. The floaters and all that. I’ve looked this up because I have chronic pain and allergies. I wasn’t sure if my chronic post nasal drip was nasalmpolys or what. I’ve had this going on for years. I did have chronic sinusitis. I do feel the post nasal drip and I also thought I had eustachian tube dysfunction. I saw an ENT last week. I do have eustacian tube dysfunction but he says no nasal polyps and no TMJ despite the cracking. That the cracking is just how I’m built and how my jaw is. I’m in awe of the post nasal drip he says is just allergies. I kept telling him but what about this house I have to do to Force the mucous down? He continued to say it’s my anxiety. He asked a lot of direct questions I’ve never had a doctor who wasn’t a psych ask. On one hand I guess it’s good other docs are taking psychological issues into account but still. He also stuck his fingers in my mouth with no gloves and I froze up but still exclaimed “you didn’t put any gloves on!” This story bothers anyone without OCD I tell.
The breathing one. I have had this and it’s very interesting because I am a Buddhist and mediate daily! This whole breathing OCD thing is like a manic ebb and flow. I’m beginning to question if my panic disorder which I had relieved for almost a year is back now, not due necessarily to agoraphobia -yes I went on a googling rampage now that I am taking meds again I’m not certain I have agoraphobia that bad, at least not as severe as family members! It is possibly more linked to this ocd you’ve explained as well as specific trauma in the past. This type of OCD is maddening to say the least. Do you have or can you make one on obsessive decluttering disorder as well?
      Thanks for your videos!

For those dealing with this form of ocd please know you can get over it! Speaking from experience, it does go away if you do the right things. @@Studies.8697 my friend you must relax. Take some deep breaths, do something wholesome and enjoyable and that will divert your attention. Don’t let this rule your life, as it evidently is right now. I promise you can overcome this. I did, many others do I’m sure. It’ll pass. I didn’t really overcome it with the help of a doctor, but you may find a doctor will help you, so you should consider seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist.
I think one of the most important things in overcoming this is changing your perspective on its harmfulness or discomfort. These are lies told to you by your ocd. It is not at all threatening. It is a mild annoyance. It is really not that bad, and you absolutely can live with this comfortably for however much longer you’ll have it. Change your mindset. Do this in addition to permitting yourself to indulge in distraction and wholesome activities, enjoyable hobbies and mentally demanding activities. Just try redirect the focus of your thought, and otherwise live normally as much as possible. I think this is a good way to slowly but surely chip away at the ocd. The focus on breathing (or whatever you have) will eventually disappear, and in the meantime be a whole lot more bearable.
Please relax my friend, don’t let it ruin your life. Be strong, I’m here if you would like to talk more. But please also don’t feed your ocd’s constant and indefatigable desire for reassurance. If satisfied, it is many times only so momentarily. Like I said, perhaps try see a psychologist. You can absolutely overcome this, remember that.

You're not alone guys, I'm suffering from this right now. It's been about 4 months now and I'm just learning about what it is. For me it's breathing, I couldn't take the subway, drive, or even take cab rides because I would get so much anxiety and it would put me into a full blown panic attack. I've been to the ER twice, spent thousands on medical tests that all came back negative. Doctors see my results and laugh at me for being so on edge. Yet they have no clue how much of a torture this came be.
I'm going to try to lean into it, confront it, and overcome it.
Will post back to inform progress once I make some, wish me luck :)
And hang in there brothers and sisters, we'll beat this, and we'll be stronger for it.

@@tosabendoagora4474 Yes it did, although this video didn't exactly help me at all lol.
      Here's what really helped me:
      1. Find a safe space first, or a safe person. For me it was my bedroom. This should be a space that is easier for you to relax in, you can always return to this space if you feel overwhelmed.
      2. Sleep earlier, and wake up earlier. I lived in China and sought out traditional Chinese medicine when western doctors were no help. The Chinese doctor forced me to get on this sleeping schedule, and things immediately got better for me. I would go to sleep between 9:30PM and 10:30PM, and wake up somewhere around 6AM - 7AM.
      3. Make sure you NEVER miss breakfast, lunch, or dinner. low blood sugar is no joke, while it may not seem like it, eating before going about my day helped my anxiety by A LOT. I used to never eat breakfast, but now I do.
      4. Exposure does help. I was unable to ride the subway or taxies at first, but after I got myself on a good sleeping schedule and started eating well, I took my safe person with me (my wife, who was the most supportive person for me through this entire ordeal), and we went on subway rides, and taxi rides, and even plane rides! the first ride was always tough, but the subsequent rides got a litter easier each time I took them.
It is now 2 months later, and my wife and I have managed to relocate from Beijing, China to New York City (with a cat too!), I've managed to go from this useless puddle of slime to a somewhat functioning person again! I still get some anxiety sometimes, but it's much more manageable now.
Things do get better my friends, hang in there.
P.S Also, here is a little hack the Chinese doctor taught me: If you feel like you can't stop your anxiety, just close your eyes, take a finger, and press down slightly on one of your eyelids, you should feel pressure on your eyeball; your anxiety will be reset within a minute. THIS ABSOLUTELY WORKED FOR ME LIKE A MIRACLE.

I had this, I’ll teach you how to get over it entirely, you’ll be like new again I promise! There are two rules, rule number one, THINK your thoughts in normal manner and don’t just come up with the first thought and start panicking and notice your breath get heavier, no, the brain can only FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME so if you think and come up with normal conversation in your head you won’t notice your breath anymore. Rule number two FORGET ABOUT IT, there will be times when you’re gonna get triggered again, just remember rule nr one, it will always get you out of the woods, start thinking or counting to 20 until you get your focus back. Google this tik tok video “green needle brain storm” it’s a doctor that explains in very simple fun way how the brain cannot focus on two things at once!

I have struggle with this type of OCD for a while now, but right now I am better and feel like a weight has been lifted of my shoulder. One tip I could give is you don’t have to think/worry about your breathing because their is parts in your brain (the nervous system)that do it for you. Second this type of OCD is fear. The fear of you being stuck thinking about your breathing forever, but that is not true. Fear does not exist it is just a illusion, that your brain came up with, so it is not real. Third tip relax breath remember you are okay. ( I really hope this helps. Thank you and remember stay strong. It will get better. It did for me)

for anyone who’s struggle with sensimotor ocd, there is a hope, im a living example for it
i was struggling for my entire life with this, it started when i was a kid and now im in my 20s.
i was noticing my swallowing, breathing and blinking, not all at the same time but through years
everytime it was happening, i was scared and my tactic was to fight it
and one day, year ago, i started noticing my swallowing once again and just had enough
i did some research then and found this video which helped me a lot! instead of fighting the swallowing sensations, i started swallowing like crazy - i think it was like hundred times in day, i was thinking about it on purpose and surprise… it was gone
what’s more - now when it’s happening i’m accepting it, embracing it and i’m not scared of it so i’m not focusing much and it is always fading away by some time
i do the same with breathing, blinking, it does even work with panic attacks-
it is gonna be very uncomfortable for some time but it’s gonna work, i promise!

This is a constant battle for me. After nearly 20 years, I noticed I have been focusing on manual breathing during times of high anxiety. The problem is that my anxiety gets bad when it happens. It's very frustrating. I have had it off and on for the last 2 years and most times I have to tell myself off and say that if this is going to be the way that it will be for the rest of my life, then so be it. It's so debilitating. I can't pin point what causes it and distractions don't work. It's just awful. I wish I could shut it off. People feel helpless around me because they don't understand it, but they are supportive. I never thought I would be so envious of people who don't have this condition, but I really am.

Have you tried what he was talking about at 8:39 and onward...similar strategies? Stopping your compulsions to distract are a big part of stopping ocd cycles. It's very tough to cure your fear for breathing if you cant stop running for it. That's why distraction doesnt work.. Distraction is basically running from your fear of breathing.

One of the best things ive noticed for me to do is take the time to meditate, watch your breath, but rememeber you are literally doing nothing. Did you just stop breathing? Why did that happen? Fear from a thought? See it and let your body get some air and youll burst through the ice. Just let the breathing happen dont judge it. During meditation also let your mind listen to noise around but dont focus on one particluar thing, just familiarize with all the random noises around, then come back to the breath, but you are doing nothing, just being aware and letting it go>

-Learning more about your ocd, there’s a helpful channels on yt that go in depth.
    - find exercises to deal with the day to day panic attacks
    - cutting off any negative feelings towards daily tasks\the ocd
-having something/someone with you really helps. -this could be your favourite show, friend, animal, family member etc…
-prove yourself wrong/offer yourself reassurance, going outside may be hard but keep pushing❤️
    - don’t force yourself to recover, take things slow
First day of this summer I had to deal with it, it wasn’t easy but knowing that I wasn’t alone really helped. It took only two months for me to recover. it may not be the perfect recovery but I can go to places without having a panic attack or thinking about it all day. Hey guys, I had this for about a month, I was quarantined with covid and I thought I had a breathing problem. Basically, I wasn't doing much at the time and it was a period of stress for me. Having a schedule and doing daily tasks helps a lot forgetting the breathing ocd. You're never going to forget it, most of the times when you want to relax and sleep it's going to come back. You gotta get used to it, then you can handle it with ease.
P.S. I was afraid to sleep because I thought I wasn't going to breathe in my sleep, I hadn't slept for days, and after that I was microsleeping. When I read a neurologist's comment I was relieved. You are not gonna die in your sleep, although you should check it out just to relieve some stress.

I definitely relate a LOT to the breathing and heart beat aspect. I used to do CrossFit gym training and ever since I started noticing my breath which caused panic attacks I stopped going to the gym because it was making it worse. It’s honestly scary because I whenever that panic attack comes I feel as if I can’t breathe even though I am breathing just fine. Then I hyper-ventilate.

Urinary frequency for me. For a few months I became obsessed with making sure my bladder was empty before bed, often making myself go 3 times before going this sleep. Gradually it became an all day thing, to the point where I was making myself go every 30 minutes. Urologists have ruled out infection or retention. Now I’m hyper aware of even the slightest drop in my bladder. I’ve been training myself to accept these sensations for a few weeks now. Things seem to be getting better in that I feel less anxious about the bladder signals. I’ve gotten to the point where I can differentiate actually needing to go and the unnecessary signals from my hyper awareness. My biggest challenge is trying to stop myself from physically checking by pressing my finger into my bladder... this sends more false signals and increases my awareness.
Ten years ago I had an issue with blinking that lasted about a year. I never thought I’d be dealing with an issue like this again.

Nathan, would you be willing to make more videos on this specific topic? I have watched the videos on the playlist and they have been helpful, but there are times where I'm not sure how to handle the exposure therapy. I've broken free from other sensorimotor obsessions in the past, but focusing on them never actually caused any legitimate danger, and that doesn't seem to be the case for my breathing obsession. When breathing is off my mind, it's fine, so I don't believe I have a breathing problem. But when I focus on it, I seem to not breathe as well. I sometimes see colors, which suggests I am not breathing enough, or possibly too much. I sometimes get congested because I think I'm blowing out my nose too hard, and this makes it happen even faster. Instead of feeling afraid that I'll never get it off my mind, I'm afraid that having it on my mind is going to keep me from being able to speak, breathe, live, etc. and it is debilitating, especially because facing this fear seems to confirm it as rational, at least to some degree. I've been taking tips from your other videos and literally saying things like, "This might make me faint. So be it. Whatever." Or "Maybe I'm not breathing enough. Maybe I'll die because of it. Whatever." -to clarify: I'm not suicidal and don't want to die, but forcing myself to face the possibility that focusing on my breathing is going to suffocate me is the only way I can think to apply the tips to my specific obsession. I guess I'm just wondering if I should be doing this how I've been doing it? Like should I be resisting the compulsion to try to get it off my mind in public, even though I get so winded from talking to people and actually start to faint? When that happens, it feels like the only solution is to do the compulsion and get it off my mind but I don't want to do that. I've tried to look up exercises for breathing to be better at it, but a lot of them say to try and get it off your mind because it's not meant to be conscious, and exposure is all about doing the opposite. I'm trying to avoid having the 'safe spaces' thing going on, but I seem to only have successful exercises at home (and by that I mean exercises that end with me calming down rather than resorting to the compulsion of distracting myself) when I don't have to talk to anyone or do anything else while I'm focused on the breathing..And there's always a part of me that wonders if this is the right way to do the exercises anyway.. Idk if I'm supposed to call it quits after a certain period of time and return to the compulsion of distracting myself to give myself a break, or if I'm supposed to face the awareness of the breathing 24/7. though I always try to tell myself, so what if I'm not doing this right, maybe I'm not, whatever, and shut out that voice of doubt lol Anyway, I would be so grateful if you would be willing to talk about this in another video. I'm unable to afford therapy, but your videos have been so helpful to me. I'm often trying to take the tips from your other OCD videos and apply it to this issue, as I know, no obsession is special, but sometimes it's hard to think of how a tip would apply to this specific type of obsession.

I have had this for years surrounding manually swallowing/salivating. I think its also related to social anxiety as I am afraid of other people noticing and thinking that I am weird. I also have this fear of "giving" it to someone else like its a disease. Like if I sit next to someone they will notice me swallowing loudly and then they will become conscious of their swallowing and thus they will have caught my "disease". So I feel guilty if I sit next to someone and notice them swallowing loudly too :( I know this sounds crazy but I've been dealing with it since I was 13 (so 7 almost 8 years!) It sucks because so many meditation videos I watch involve breathing exercises and often they will tell you to pay close attention to your breath but for me that often has the adverse side effect of making my hyper-aware of it and then causing me anxiety. I've had OCD for years but I only just discovered now that this is another symptom I was totally unaware of.

Merry Men what I mean by is to not think about that somatic syomptoms such as blinking, breathing and swallowing. It’s not an important thing to be thinking about, just an annnoying bumpy thing in ur life trying to dis motivate and drag u down! Don’t let that thing stop you from being a person that u are not meant to be. I have been dealing with all 3 symptoms above until today ! However I manage to get used to it and not think it as a big thing. I promise u you will get better! Just cope with it bruda 👌

I have a constant need to do a quick exhale. Over and over. Sometimes, this started when I was really little (I'm 26 now), when a word ends in "ing" I will keep saying that part. Like, "something-ing-ing-ing-ing..." etc. I can't keep myself from doing it in front of people, although I find comfort when people actually point it out. I'm a comedian, so I always find comfort when people point out my weird behaviors. I'm lucky in that sense, I guess. But this shit is worse when I'm driving. I recently drove from Montana to Arkansas and every couple hours I had to pull over and place back and forth and splash water on my face and stretch because I thought I was gonna pass out because my breathing tics get so overwhelming when I drive for too long. It makes me feel so crazy, dude. I'm glad this video exists and knowing others struggle like I do helps a lot. Although none if my doctors have ever been of any real help. My lungs and respiratory system are healthy. I wish there was a fucking cure.

Thank You so much 😭 OMG you just gave Me the Knolledge I need to understand and now I need to build up to this. I have anxiety disorder from noticing my breath. I really don’t want to get anxiety from it because my brain tells me I’m not breathing cuz when I focus on my breath then I feel like I’m not breathing and I’m going to die.

@@Damitha_Sashendra I had this too, just accept it, accept it as much as possible, think hey I’ll live with this forever and that’s fine, what’s the worse that can happen, I woke up today right? And that’s a blessing, eventually ur brain gets bored and u forget about it, and if u can’t that’s ok! Acceptance is the biggest cure,

Yeah I’m going to try and do that. It’s hard to accept it when being triggered but hopefully with practice it’ll work.
