- I was always interested in the Kodak Retina because it was known as the affordable rangefinder with good quality. I think it lives up to all the hype. .

Your shutter is probably not broken. Just reset the film counter by pressing the button by the release and slide the bottom below in the direction of the arrow.
Yes, I believe as the film moves over that silver colored sprocket inside the film chamber, it cocks the shutter for the next frame. Usually you can just turn that sprocket with your fingers to check it out.
I know this is an older video, but if you have the chance to buy a working one... Do it!! I have some really nice film cameras but the IIIc always holds a place in my heart. It's perfectly quirky and compact but built so well and the lens is gorgeous. Super super sharp but perfect contrast and just enough falloff at wide open.
I’ll have to get another copy and run some rolls through.
hi~thanks for this great video, i got a iic, can i fold the camera properly with a uv or skylight filter attached on the lens?
Nice camera. I've got one of those but the shutter wouldn't release. I've just learnt from a previous comment on this video that you need to have film in there for the shutter to work. I'll see if that's what my issue is.
Yeah, but that comment is wrong - the film moving over a roller does not cock the shutter. However, many people think the shutter is broken because the camera locks it when the exposure counts down to "0". Just reset the counter and the shutter cocks and works again. And then again, the shutter may also be broken.
It's a shame that the camera doesn't work, you must get it repaired! It is an absolute joy to shoot with! I own a 1956 Retina IIc that my grandfather gave to me. The images that it takes are amazingly sharp and detailed.
+wiaang thanks for the tip. I hear it's legendary too.
Not sure if you know, but you need to press the silver button by the counter and while it's pressed slide the switch on the back to get it to the diamond on the counter. Hope this gets it working! I have numerous retinas and love them all!
+Jeff Grant I've already sold it but thanks for the tip. Maybe it will help someone else watching this video.
Kodak A.G. Dr. Nagel Werk made these in Germany, that's why the high quality.
My IIIc has what I think is the same problem, described to me a "broken cocking rack". The toothed rack slides when the lever actuates. But they made them out of bronze, which if I understood correctly, becomes brittle with age. The only way to repair it is to cannibalize another IIIc for the part. Mine is out for repair now. Fingers crossed. It was my dad's, so it has sentimental value.
+Charles Davidson I hope it survives. If they can't repair it message me back, I know a guy.
Update, came back 100%. Near total rebuild for $150.
I actually want one of those.
+PJ De Jesus If you're interested in getting this one and repairing it, I'd trade you for a lens/body/etc. I'm looking for Russian lenses and medium format stuff.
The shutter is broken on mine too... the mechanism is frozen.
It's a common issue if you look at the other comments as well. Bummer
I've recently come into possession of one of these amazing cameras, and the first thing I did after seeing that it worked was push in the film advance clutch and now I have no clue how to release it ! Any help would be wonderful
These get jammed commonly. You may want to search for, stuck shudder Retina IIIc.
@@ShawneeUnion Good to know, and thanks for the advice! I figured it out though, and it's super cool to use, especially when I've never touched any kind of film camera before.
I have one of these cameras but it is broken are there any guides to how I can fix it
Hard to fix, ask @fixoldcameras if he can help. He’s the best

The folding Retinas are great cameras.I have a I and II,still working on getting a IIIc.Have you tried it with a dummy roll of film yet?My Retinas won't set the shutter release without film in them.
+M Poole Ah! that must be why my shutter wont release. I had no idea. I was about to condemn mine.
+Old Cameras I may have to try this too. Maybe it's the reason.
