  • Birth Mothers Amplified is co-hosted by friends and fellow birth mothers Muthoni and Emma. Most weeks they are joined by one or more birth mother guests to talk about adoption topics.
Birth Mothers Amplified thrives on empowering the women who make adoptions possible and allowing birth parents to speak their truths and share their stories authentically.
This week, Emma and Muthoni are joined by birth mother Dominique. Dominique placed her son for adoption in November 2016. She has an incredibly unique story, touching on topics such as the difference between closed and open adoptions, adoption education, communication between birth parents and adoptive families, and placing a child after parenting previous children.

Everette’s birth story brought me here to find Dominque. I love your story and have felt a connection to all of you since watching the documentary. My son gave his child up for adoption and we have a relationship with the baby and his adoptive parents now. He turned 2 in February. It takes communication and a lot of loving that child so much that he is first in everyone’s mind during the process. I have never been more proud of my son and his ex girlfriend for the unselfish choice they made. I had my son at 17 and say so often it is what I should have done with him, but I didn’t. He is my only child and he is 24 now. I have always let the baby’s parents know that if they ever feel the need to step away from us, to do what they feel is right for them and the baby. I guess my advice to family members is to never lose sight of what adoption is for. It is an unconditional love that everyone emotionally attached has to have for this one little human. He was and still is the reason we make the decisions we make. You are beautiful Dominique and deserve the world. Keep your eyes and head focused and you will continue to grow and help so many others. I’m proud of you.

So much to say... but I will say this, emotional awareness education is so needed in the adoption space for EVERYONE.

I am so happy you see Dominique I just watched her adoption story and am in tears because I am also a Bio Mom to 2 son's 24 & 21 and a Mama now to a 10 yr old son. We had an open adoption with my son's and it was absolutely essential that we had it that way. Sadly both my son's ended up in the system at the age of 12 and went through hell but one is following Christ now and has changed his life so much. He is learning healthy boundaries and has been clean and sober for a year now. My other son is working on sobriety but is not for God at all and quite the opposite so we don't talk alot but as his biological mom I will always be here when he needs me. My 21 yr old comes to stay for a few days a month and spend time mentoring his little brother who just lost his dad.

Thanks for sharing,... could you explain more about how it was you couldn’t afford an abortion? If it was first trimester it wouldn’t cost that much and if you didn’t have it you could obtain one at somewhere such as planned parenthood or other clinics with emergency Medicaid

I feel so bad that the moms needs as the one who carried bonded and is the child’s mom went through labor, I hurt for Dominique and other birth moms whos need are placed beneath the adoptive parents- how demeaning to be told not to call or text the adoptive mother but only the adoptive father-- that sounds like the adoptive parents were being on a power trip. They should realize beforehand there is a natural powerful and life long bond the mother has for her child - why not allow her to talk w the adoptive mother after all for God sake she is concerned for her child. That’s the reason why birth moms place their child in the first place bc the agencies tell them if they do the baby will be well cared for. When a dog owner leaves them at a dog sitter they (!) want to communicate to see how their dog is doing
The whole industry is so predatory guilt trip the mother to think they should defer to the adoptive mother wishes instead of the other way around - the adoptive parents should defer to the mother of their child

Adoption cannot be compared to dog sitting. Parental rights have been terminated, the sacrifice has been made to allow another mother to protect and do what is best for the child. I commend the father for stepping in and protecting his wife's ability to mother to her best ability without stress. Anger, depression, blame and hostility can come with grief, but the adoptive family's ability to love and set boundaries until this short moment in time passed proves their commitment to Dominique.
