Being an immigrant coming from similar background, I can’t agree more with Jimmy Ouyang on 33:25 when he talked about how US-born Asians don’t wanna be associated with the FOB Asians. Hell, even my own ABC cousins didn’t wanna say hi to me at school back in the day. I understand most Asians in the US don’t want to be stereotyped, but denying Asian immigrants’ accent or cultural differences will only gonna make them discriminating their own ppl.

Teresa Huang Speaking as an ABC, Australian-born Chinese, it can be hard to associate with those who openly refer to us as bananas, criticise our lack of desire for materiality, and mock our "lack of ambition" merely because we chose to pursue an intellectual/artistic discipline.
There's a difference between constructive criticism and judgement. ABCs don't appreciate it when such negativity is directed at them.
However, I'd like to highlight that no two families are alike, when the relations are strained, it is reflected by the younger generations' attitudes towards one another.

    • @TheBeautifulDisaster
      @TheBeautifulDisaster Před 6 lety +19

Yet, even in Australia, this issue exists, where Chinese immigrant students accuse ABCs of maintaining this attitude where we're unwilling to associate with them.

If you look at the way the brain develops, kids or teenagers don't really understand nuance, or narratives, or even the social stratification of social hierarchies, their cognitive development isn't there yet. They just see social groups, and they just want to be included. Jimmy makes a great point here, that exposure to Asians, and DIVERSE Asians to boot- in media is really critical to how opinions and concepts are formed - especially at young ages. Identity is an extremely personal thing, and very difficult to reconcile - Jimmy also nodded to this - in terms of reconciling his dreams of doing something artistic, versus the role of being a good son. We shouldn't demonize people for excluding others, when they could be trying to figure out their own shit, and are resolving their own insecurities. The best thing that we can teach kids and try to be ourselves is open, compassionate and kind - because we're all human and trying to find our way in the world.

  • @kevinchou1124

It's really weird listening to Jimmy talk about his journey because I went through scarily similar events growing up. Immigrant at 14, glasses, pants up too high, played ping-pong as a kid, switched to boxers cuz was laughed at, played basketball in high school, personality make over just to fit in, didn't want to hang with other Asians in college, etc. There are probably a lot of kids like us in the 90s. Difference is I didn't disappoint my parents. I got into engineering, took me 6 yrs to graduate and though I hated every minute of it I still graduated. I got a regular job, got married, had kids, etc. Never disappointed my parents but looking back maybe I should have. If you are reading this and you're Asian and in college with an engineering or comp sci degree that you hate, take my word for it, fuck pleasing your parents, do something you love. Sure you can play it safe but in the end, it's better to risk being homeless than become soul less.

Love this talk, and how Jimmy handled the QA. He is very precise in pointing out the different side, and use the soft approach which I love is to "humanize" the story. Often, there are just too many argue between different generation and culture, and even between the ABC / 1.5 generation and FOB. (for the Asian people living out side of Asia). I personally went through that process, and now looking back, some of the situation I could have deal much better. There is definitely right or wrong in certain situation, just a different patch of choice.

Thanks for posting this, it was very interesting and enjoyable to me. I've wondered where Jian-Yang's acting & Silicone Valley character came from on the show -- so it was nice to see here that he's a true fusion man, and a decently cool guy -- and is very open and honest about his life, and self-deprecating. I'm a new fan of him, and I see from this that I'm not the only one! He has some great stand up videos here also!
In general, I love how he is not afraid to poke fun at his own race, and our globe's rich cultural differences and foibles and funnyness -- especially in this age of hyper-racism-sensitivity -- I think humor is key for all of our healing. ("My rap band was 1.5 Asian guys and 1.5 Black guys" HAHA! Kumbaya!) As a kid, and any day, we have all heard plenty of HURTFUL racist jokes -- but I think it's healing humor therapy to share our good clean FUN racist jokes! Good job to HBO producers on this, which were a bit brave to include (Jian-Yang's character is an unapologetic racist against other Asians, and fat white Erlich's, after all!) Good job to the Google interviewer also! As Red Green said: "We're all in this together!"

I know many asians my not relate, but im asian raised in Massachusetts in the 70's which was pretty hard in the beginning. But when i moved to California at 13 years old, my mind was more white but I definitely was Asian on the outside.
But i always got what i aimed for and never felt discrimination but im sure i was at time.
But since i wasn't looking for it, nothing ever stopped me. I reached all my goals i set at 8 years old by 30.
I did give my asian mom some heart attacks but was always a respectful son. Always sending money to them until they told me to stop when I got married. Lol
I didn't learn how hard it was to be an Asian male until i took an Asian American class in college.
I then (at age 50) asked young Asian girls/woman how they felt sbout asian men and how young Asian teens and men felt about being Asian. Wow i didn't know how different i grew up not feeling or looking for the differences.
Just wanted to say that i agree with his statement. Don't let be being Asian discrimination be the reason you stop trying. I never knew it existed even though I see it now sometimes and i reached all my goals.
Best wishes and God bless you all, Leo
