Many Fine Exhibits including a massive Battleship USS MISSOURI ,A large display of fire engines both of which made from MECCANO ! ,A 7 1/4 BIG BOY under construction the tender alone has nearly 3000 rivits ! , Superb Locomotives in all scales ,Demos, Traders and much more many thanks to all involved for another excellent show, fIlmed with a Panasonic VXF1
Went to Wembley show in 1976. Best in show was working Merlin aero engine , scale perhaps 10th. There was so much gear I didn't know where to look !!. Still got a Polish callipers I bought there . Watching today brought back many memories. Thanks my friends. Dave
Cheers Dave, I remember Wembley they were the days as like you say so much to see ! Sadly it looks like there will be no more shows at Alley Pally, I heard a show could be up north but too far for me

I went that exhibition in 1990 while living in London for 2 years. That show along with the museums were the highlight of my time there. It is amazing how many people in the UK are into model engineering and do such amazing work. I bought a lot of plans and materials for some of these projects but aside from a couple of model steam engines that I completed while I was there I have not had time to complete any of them. I still plan to get some of them done if my health holds out. I am 77 now and I really appreciate this video being posted.

A Yank mechanical engineer chiming in. I was very impressed with the craftsmanship of the models - especially the large scale live steam trains such as the "Coronation". I can't even imagine the 1000's of hours of work that went into her and the engineering challenges that had to be resolved. Great job and please keep it going!

@@GRAHAM1514 My own 5inch parts other than the locomotive are spread over my whole Appartement trying to get a four plank goods wagon . it should be used as Service/Drivers car behind the loco

As a young boyin the early 60sxI was completely smitten by large models of steam locos, I remember many of them at Clapham in the transport museum.
Nothing has changed I still feel the same today.

It was an old bus depot.
The museum opened in 960 and closed in 1973.
The collection was divided between the NRM and the London transport museum at Covent garden.

Deltic went to the Science museum but is now at York
I can remember Deltic running through Hornsey in the late 50s

Wonderful show and excellent video of this event. I am envious of the shows and fine models which you have access to. Keep them coming. Congrats also to the exhibitors and makers of these models.

At 23:48, that is quite amazing. It must've been a chore moving that in and setting it up. I hope everyone was polite and it didn't receive any damage from all the fascinated primates

(17:06) Amazing what can be still be done with Frank Hornby's Meccano system - props to Steve Briancourt! I've never seen the USS Missouri, myself, but sister ships (including the USS Iowa) are quite impressive! Low and long!

Lovely people, keeping sheds great.
Excellent footage throughout, thanks Graham - no mean feat to capture this volume of material so steadily entirely hand-held! The exhibition provided tremendous variety... the only aspect missing was a guest appearance by Cyril and Daisy, or maybe they were there and I missed that bit. The award winning workshop was truly remarkable - I particularly liked the arc welding although Rambo may have looked slightly out of place. Apart from the trains, I really enjoyed seeing the Liebherr shovel and the articulated lorry reversing. Although obviously necessary, the widespread use of security devices was a sad manifestation of the modern age. And finally... very interesting to see inside the Alexandra Palace - the stained glass didn't go unnoticed. Kind regards, Bob.

sad state of thing's when you have to alarm/chain your model's down so they dont get stolen,
Been standard practice at exhibitions for the nearly 30 years I've been doing them

I haven't been for about 30 years, so it was really good to see what was on display. It looks like the standards of detail have risen beyond anything achievable back then, while the number of exhibits has fallen considerably. The Missouri was impressive although I'm not sure what Meccano parts went into those big gun barrels?
Not sure myself what went into the Missouri Gun Barrels and i forgot to ask , Agree in what you say about the exhibits have fallen, Model Engineering is not as popular as it used to be sorry to say and not sure how long these large shows will go on for , Thanks for your comments

@@paullee5573 HI Paul , Sorry but i honestly can not tell you because we dont know how long this pandemic will last for , I suggest you google London Model Engineering exhibition and look at the search results , The January 2021 London show was cancelled because of covid , Take care Graham

Graham, I just googled them. They informed me that the 2001 exhibition, scheduled for last month, had to be cancelled due to lockdown. However 2022 is planned to go ahead, again in January, and again at Ally Pally.

The loco workshop is my favourite model. Notice the labels "left" and "rite" on the frames of one loco!

Thanks for your comments, Alexandra Palace is quite difficult to get to as its busy ( London ! ) and at the top of a steep hill , There is a loading/ unloading area at the end of the hall so they bring their models in Cars, Vans, trucks etc.

1:02 That security cable is a sad sign of the times.
The main problems with these exhibitions that used to be soooo good in the 1980s is the huge charges to exhibit there - it has driven all the small interesting stands away and now one has to go to the smaller model exhibitions around the country. At least you can park at those however, usually for free so it's not all bad I suppose.
The peak time for these exhibitions was at Wembley Conference centre and the early Sandown ones until the money vampire landlords arrived and took it apart.
Bit ridiculous on some of those large exhibits , who's gonna try and carry out 5'' gauge a Britania class Loco and tender for example ...........................
I used to live the model engineering exhibition in Earl's Court and Sandown when I was a kid. Went to this one a few years back and it was a pale shadow of what I remembered as a child.
@@alexball5907 Me too! The magic of the early M.E. shows is still available in small does at local model railway shows, but I don't think we'll get the big exhibition days back due to the high rents and costs. I'm glad I went to the early M.E. shows, great memories!

Went to this exhibition in 2016. One of my big memories was of all the middle-aged wives dutifully trudging round behind their husbands! You could see in their faces that they were thinking;
"Oh look, another piece of metal!. Any chance of a sitdown and a cup of tea dear?"
Yes mine one of them ! never enough seats , Mind i used to get dragged round the shops i used to shout hooray when it was time to go home
what a lovely show. are there any children invoved with this hobby , as i see mostly 50 and or 60 yo men . hate to see it dissapear. i did see children and parents in the audiance though. loved the big battleship.
It always has been normally for the older generations gos with engineering experence plus something to build in retirement years ,there was quite a lot for Children to get involved with including our mock up hunslet on the Chelmsford stand , Thanks for your comments
Patience, skill and money come with old age, but I remember Meccano with metal, gears and small screws, now it is instant Lego so I do have concerns, but this will always be a niche hobby open to ridicule. Doing it is just not "cool" even though the results are. I speak as a long time scale railway modeller and lucky enough to have infected my sun at an early age many years ago, but I believe that there will always be just enough "few" to carry the torch onward and maybe upward

Why are the model trains going staccato ?
I thought recent motor control designs with inertia and speed control for long were integrated.
Ok, I've only watched the first 10 minutes of the video so far, but I think what you may be referring to, from what I've seen, is actually a technical artefact of converting from one frame rate to another. The first set of moving trains you'll notice were all 'staccatoing' at the same frequency
Where's the internal combustion engines?
I'm afraid there weren't many there, just a few on the SMEE stand. They are usually much better represented at Doncaster.
