I've had that problem, only when using the Macbook charging cable, for me it didn't want to connect via that, so sometimes it could be the cable, if you have followed all the steps until that point. I've also heard cloud servers need to be turned off.
Thanks for this. I used Capture 1 for a month or so and couldn't justify the price. This super handy. Installed it on my iMac and my MacBook Air. I use manual lenses and this helps with the focus previewing.

There should be an option in your camera to save to memory card and computer when taking photos, that is if you're using the Sony A7III. For filming I'm afraid it will only save to the memory card.
Thank you for explaining this wonderful application. I need you to please explain the application of the letter E. I really need it in order to use the special dropper in White Balance to read the degrees of white as it is available in Lightroom. I hope you can help me.

Hello! how are you? thank you so much for this video! But something is not working for me :( I have a SLT-A58 and when I connect the cable to my windows computer it just says 'Connecting' and then when I open the app it says that the camera is not connected, I dont know what to do :(
Hi, I'm well, I hope you are too! As for your camera, the Sony a series unfortunately is not well supported by this app. The A58 does not support live view or any of the other features, so it would not connect to the remote tether part of Sony Imaging Edge, sorry about that. I guess it's Sony's way of getting people to upgrade their cameras.
If your live view is not working straight away, this might be because you connected to the app in Video mode. Changing to any of the photography modes and then back to video will fix this issue. Worked for me on the A7S II.
@@PhillipSkraba I noticed you sometimes commented you wasn't sure why a camera was not working with live view, while it should be supported, this is a great thing to check first :) Thanks for the video, it was very helpful

Thank you for such an informative video. I always come back to it whenever I am facing tethering issues. I have a question, when I connect my Sony A7iii to my mac in Remote it allows me to rotate my video but is there anyway to mirror image it because I shoot myself my actions are always shown opposite on the screen which gets confusing. Thank you in advance!
This is a great explanation, thanks! It also works over wifi, but it really slows down the file handling speed on the camera and completely fills the image buffer. Is that issue resolved when using the usb cable?
I am looking to use this software to view video on a Mac display while I'm recording video with a Sony A7r IV. Will that work? I've considered buying something like Black Magic or Magewell, but if this software does it without the need for any other hardware, that would be awesome. Please advise.
Yes, that would work. You would only be able to record onto the memory card though, not onto the computer. I recommend testing this before hand, just so you know how everything works. Thanks for dropping by 🔥
Hey Phillip, thanks for this. Super helpful. I'm currently trying to flip or mirror the screen on my Imagining Edge Desktop. Right now it's opposite - so when I go left, it's showing I go right. D'you know how I can change this? Been exploring for a while, but can't seem to find a setting unfortunately. Would really appreciate your help. Thanks!
Great video. One question, i am trying to record video directly to MAC desktop folder using this software so hope save a trip transferring files from SD Card to USB reader. is it possible?
No, that's not possible. The video will record onto your memory card and not the computer, only photos are saved to the computer when using this program.
I have tried using a Tether Tools cable and a USB-C cable my computer says it doesn't recognize the last connected USB device. I have followed your setup instructions along with many others and I get the same error message. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! edit - using an A7iii and Windows 10 64 bit computer. I get the same error on my laptop too.
@@garyc6183 Okay, that should work. For fun try to set it to auto and see if that makes a difference. Have you tried another usb cable? Mine was bent, just this tiny bit and it wouldn't work. Apart from that, this is what Microsoft states: support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2654149/error-usb-device-not-recognized-when-you-try-to-access-a-usb-external That might help. I just swapped to Apple last year, and used Windows all my life, and I remember I had to install/re-install drivers sometimes for things to work. It sounds like a Windows problem, rather than a camera/cable or Imaging Edge problem. Let me know how it goes.
Hi Phillip! Thank you so much for this video! i have a question, is it possible to just use the remote mode and only save the photos on the camera and not on the pc? i just want to see what i'm shooting but only save it on camera 🥲 thank you in advance!!
Great video - thank you! I can’t make my A7iii autofocus when tethered. Clicking to focus doesn’t work. Although it autofocuses just fine when in video mode. Any ideas where I’ve gone wrong?
That is odd. Did you follow all my steps here? I've found some lenses don't work, some need the focus to be set on manual, it's a little bit here and there.
Hi Albert, I had the same issue with my a7iii, but i found the solution for this: just go to your camera, Menú, photo settings (1), pag. 7, Pre-AF, and turn it ON. You’ll find this very annoying if you are not using the program, so I turn it ON only when needed. :)
I cannot tether my sony a7iii - however, it works when I switch to a new user on my mac (big sur). My guess is that it is iCloud Drive causing the problems? know anything about that?
Is there a way to show the settings using this app? Like the shutter speed, aperture, and iso? I'm because I want to record the camera LCD screen and I found this way to be the best
Hi! No, I'm afraid there is no way to record what you see on your camera screen using this app. I haven't done that before but I think people do that using monitors like the Atomos Ninja V, or you can even use your smartphone and film the inside of your viewfinder, that works too.
I have used previous version of Imaging Edge Desktop (IEDT) successfully on Macs in the past, but, for the life of me, I just couldn’t get the latest version of IEDT to work on my M1 Mac Studio. IEDT would detect the a7R4 attached to the USB port, but when attempting to start a capture session, it would then report that the camera could not be “found”. Capture One worked flawlessly (identical USB cord, port, camera settings, etc.). This shouldn’t be a thing, but, IMHO, if you are having troubles with IEDT, reconsider the overpriced Capture One.
Awesome! Is there a way of having each pic being displayed automatically in full screen? Lets say I'm shooting in a studio and I have a 2nd screen connected. I can't figure out how to get viewer into full screen mode. I do use lightroom tho.
In Lightroom that's possible, but you can't tether with Sony just yet. In Imaging Edge, I'm afraid not, let's hope they work on it though in the next year.
Hi. On 08:52 , with focus adjustments, what if you hold click the focus arrow? is it possible to achieve a smooth rack focus while recording? would really appreciate if you test it and reply, thanks
What can I do if I still get ‘cannot connect to camera’ prompt? I changed my camera setting like you suggested and I don’t have any other apps open on the computer.
Simple and to the point, greta tutorial and keep the content up, would like some videos with the Sony-ZV 1 as I'm getting it soon and may need some help, anyway great video and I subbed, thank you!
Apparently the better cables are designed to the highest USB specifications to filter out signal noise and reduce transmission errors. Apparently. I've used TetherTools my whole professional life, for example, for me, my Macbook Pro cable doesn't work.
Thank you for this super helpful video!! I was able to get my Sony a6400 tethered to my MacBook following your video! I do have a question that maybe you can help with. I sometimes want to use the live view as a monitor to watch when doing macro video makeup application on myself. However the live view is flipped so it gets difficult to use it as a mirror of sorts because the motion is in the opposite direction. Is there any setting to flip the live view?
You're welcome! I had to connect my camera, check if there were any new updates and see if they added a horizontal flip option, but I'm afraid they haven't, which is a shame as it's quite a simple need. Let's hope they drop an update for this option in the future. Have a great end of year Lisa!
Your'e welcome! You can use whatever one you wish that will connect to your camera and computer, I've always used tether tools, but other cables do work, not always, but usually don't pose a problem.
Hey, I can select my camera and open it in remote but the image never loads. I can use the capture button and it works and displays on my computer . But I can’t see the live view .. any tips?
@@PhillipSkraba thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I didn’t see that the a6000 doesn’t support the live feed through the computer, but it will from my phone for some reason.
I'm afraid that really depends on your laptop, the app is actually quite good but I don't think it's the best way to use the camera for a webcam though. I'm sure there are better apps out there for that specific need.
That really depends on your setup, the A7III series has usb-c and my Macbook Pro has usb-c, so it depends what computer you're using, I don't think it will work with a micro usb though.
Well, that's different for every camera and computer, but I for my purposes when using the Sony a7III series cameras and Macbook Pro I use a usb-c to usb-c cable from Tether Pro, on the camera there is only one usb-c port and on the Macbook Pro you can plug it into anyone you prefer.
@@PhillipSkraba i have the same setup, usb c to usb cable, Sony a7iii, MacBook pro usb c. Is there a solution if I ever need to plug into a usb A port? For a windows laptop, etc.
Is there a way to preview and select if you wanna keep the videos after recording? I have an old Canon and just switched to a Sony ZVE-10. And on Canon, I had the Canon software where i could control the camera to focus, shoot and record as well. And I was testing the sony one, the pictures go straight to the computer, but is there a way to do this with the videos as well? - Record it, watch it, discard or keep it without have to unplug the USB and all?
Thanks. I wish it would work with my camera (A6400) OR that Sony had more robust help. It won't let me use the Viewer (says the it cannot connect to the camera). Argh! I thought I had a great solution for Zoom calls.
Looking at the compatibility list I posted in the description, the a6400 should have all the options available as the a73, so it should in theory work! Sometimes it's the cable that plays tricks on us, even if it is delicately bent it might not work, and you might need to get a new one.
I use a usb-c to usb-c cable as I use the a73 and a Macbook Pro with only usb-c ports, so it really depends on your setup. You'd have to choose the correct TetherPro cable.
Hi, Thanks for the video. Just a quick question. When creating a folder to save images to, are you able to create this on an external hard drive attached to the computer? Thanks in advance.
Thanks! The USB-C cable from my Macbook Pro worked just fine for this. Yes it's way shorter, but I saved $50-70 on that cable (for now).
No way! I've tried my Macbook usb-c cable a few times as I've heard it works, but never connects for me! Good to know it works for some!

I don't think so. There is a compatibility chart below, have a check just in case.
@@PhillipSkraba Yes, ı looked after watching this video. Not compatible. Thanks for answer.
Kaan Turkover Yes, it’s a shame. No problem!
Is this going to work with Xiaomi Pad 6 also?
I have tried using a Tether Tools cable and a USB-C cable my computer says it doesn't recognize the last connected USB device. I have followed your setup instructions along with many others and I get the same error message. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! edit - using an A7iii and Windows 10 64 bit computer. I get the same error on my laptop too.
That is odd. What option have you set under usb connection in the a7iii menu?
@@PhillipSkraba I have it set to PC Remote.
@@garyc6183 Okay, that should work. For fun try to set it to auto and see if that makes a difference. Have you tried another usb cable? Mine was bent, just this tiny bit and it wouldn't work.
Apart from that, this is what Microsoft states: support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2654149/error-usb-device-not-recognized-when-you-try-to-access-a-usb-external
That might help. I just swapped to Apple last year, and used Windows all my life, and I remember I had to install/re-install drivers sometimes for things to work. It sounds like a Windows problem, rather than a camera/cable or Imaging Edge problem.
Let me know how it goes.
@@PhillipSkraba Thanks for the help! I did finally manage to get it working in Imaging Editor and Capture One.
Great and useful video, thanks!
Luca Raimondo Thank You! I’m glad I could help 🔥
Hi Phillip! Thank you so much for this video! i have a question, is it possible to just use the remote mode and only save the photos on the camera and not on the pc? i just want to see what i'm shooting but only save it on camera 🥲 thank you in advance!!
THANK YOU SOO MUCH!
You’re welcome!
Thank youso much! Do you think it s possible to use it with a tablet also?
No, I'm afraid not. For smart devices you have Sony Imaging Mobile, I did a film on that too. It requires patience, but it does work.
I cannot tether my sony a7iii - however, it works when I switch to a new user on my mac (big sur). My guess is that it is iCloud Drive causing the problems? know anything about that?
Yes, I’ve heard cloud drives play havoc on it.
Does this allow you to bypass the 30 minute recording limit at all? (sony a7iii)
I'm afraid not, as this will not record to the computer, it records onto the card when using video. The image on the screen is only for preview.
Thank you for this. Will it work with an A7RII at all?
It's possible! Check the compatibility list on the website.
@@PhillipSkraba Thank you. I will do.
@@PhillipSkraba thought so, what a shame! Thank you clarifying!
No problem!
Hey Phillip, thanks for the video. helped me a lot
Which cable did you use to connect the camera to the computer?
Micro usb? Type c? HDMI?
I used a usb c to usb c. You can connect with what ever cable you need for your setup though, just not hdmi.
What's the difference between a tethering cable and a using a USB?
Apparently the better cables are designed to the highest USB specifications to filter out signal noise and reduce transmission errors. Apparently. I've used TetherTools my whole professional life, for example, for me, my Macbook Pro cable doesn't work.
This is the best and insightful video.
Thank You!
Thank you, excellent video. Do you know what type pf tether cable can I use for Sony a6400 ?
Your'e welcome! You can use whatever one you wish that will connect to your camera and computer, I've always used tether tools, but other cables do work, not always, but usually don't pose a problem.
very useful thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Hey, I can select my camera and open it in remote but the image never loads. I can use the capture button and it works and displays on my computer . But I can’t see the live view .. any tips?
To the right hand side at the top there should be a live button (on the computer screen), that turns live view on and off.
@@PhillipSkraba thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I didn’t see that the a6000 doesn’t support the live feed through the computer, but it will from my phone for some reason.
It isn't compatible with the program but it is with Imaging Edge Mobile?
Is there a way to improve the frame rate for this? For using the camera as a webcam for example
I'm afraid that really depends on your laptop, the app is actually quite good but I don't think it's the best way to use the camera for a webcam though. I'm sure there are better apps out there for that specific need.
Hey man, Does it works with android charger micro usb?
That really depends on your setup, the A7III series has usb-c and my Macbook Pro has usb-c, so it depends what computer you're using, I don't think it will work with a micro usb though.
When explaining tethering, specifics on the tethering cable and the ports that are used would be useful.
@@amritpalbharajvideoproduction Sure, it would work the same way just use a usb a cable and you'll be fine. It will still work.
@@PhillipSkraba can you just use the charging cable from the macbook for that? It's USB c to USB c
Hey! Thanks for this video! I have a question. Which type of cable do i have to use for a Sony a7iii?
Sometimes it's the cable that plays tricks on us, even if it is delicately bent it might not work, and you might need to get a new one.
how to take photos off a macbook pro from a sony a73 camera on wifi?
I'm afraid that isn't possible with the a73, only the a7r4 has wifi tethering available, so with the a73, cable only.
Great video. Quick question. Is that a USB to USB-C type cable? Or standard micro usb to USB?
I use a usb-c to usb-c cable as I use the a73 and a Macbook Pro with only usb-c ports, so it really depends on your setup. You'd have to choose the correct TetherPro cable.
@@PhillipSkraba thanks a lot
Any idea if the software has been updated for M1 MacBooks?
No idea I'm afraid, I'm still on this ancient 2018 Macbook Pro.
Hi, Thanks for the video. Just a quick question. When creating a folder to save images to, are you able to create this on an external hard drive attached to the computer? Thanks in advance.
You're welcome Paul. Yes, sure you can, that's fine.
