After watching your review, I came to the UK from Spain on Tuesday and found myself in Sheffield this morning, I contacted Howard Music and went to their workshop, where I met David, who was happy to show some whistles. No pressure, very patient with me a 74 year old novice………and bingo, I’m off back to Spain at the weekend to learn how to play it!!!! Thank you!

Thank you for the review CutiePie. I bought one and am amazed how nice this instrument is made and how well it plays. I am just a novice having tried the low with with three other low whistles that I sold because they were too hard to play. It took me maybe 15 minutes and I was playing an easy tune with this one. I was blown away and highly recommend it. I am so glad I did not give up seeking a good quality Low D whistle that I could play. Everything about this whistle is great.

Fascinating! I'd kind of written off the Howard based on a few comments from others. It definitely looks like a whistle worth consideration, and I agree that the multi-head design is a great addition.

I recently got a Howard Low D and I absolutely love it!
I'm interested too but I'm wondering if it need a lot of air to sound. I'm a tin whistle player and I never played on low whistle.
I've just ordered a low "D" from the Howard website, after picking a low "C" up off Ebay for £50, the low C sounds great. Still no extra mouthpieces, only the standard M3 for £45. Keep up the great work CutiePie, you have a marvellous channel that is very professional!

This video helped me so much in deciding which low D whistle to get to upgrade from my Tony Dixon low D plastic whistle, when I decided that I was finally ready to make a more expensive purchase for a better whistle. I got this exact whistle directly from them in Sheffield as no US sellers had this finish; I got it Tuesday all of the way in Texas even though I just ordered it last Sunday and I am in love with it! It sounds just as wonderful in person as it does in your video! All of my purchases so far have been largely thanks to your reviews. I am so thankful for your reviews and tutorials of music, they have helped me so much in my tin whistle journey since I started last February! Not to mention all of your tips/tricks/problem solving videos lol. I look forward to learning more from you in the future!

Oh, that almost makes me fall in love with a Howard all over again! Mine must by now be 20 years old, and I've always loved the sound, but I've also found it hard to play. The gold rim round the holes look like they could have removed that problem, and I love both the idea and the execution of the multiple mouth pieces! Thanks for that great review, Stephanie!
I have a Howard Low D as well and totally agree with you. Mine is about 10 years old with just the one fipple.. Like you I like the sound of it but find it difficult to play and have never managed to use it successfully with other players. One day I'll invest in another low whistle but until that time I have several good high D whistles that I use when playing with others.

@@charlotteolsson I wish I could say that I have more then one low whistle but the Howard is the only one I have. I have a bunch of regular whistles in the key of D and C and the one I use the most is a Parks whistle. I often play in sessions so a high D is generally the easy way to go. I would like to get a Chieftain or a Susato low D. I've heard those are really good. I had a friend who swore by his Sweethart low D but the owner of that company retired and I don't think they sell them anymore.
That's good to hear. I have a 20 year old Howard low D and in the bottom half of the low register it drives like a truck, is the best way to describe it. Jigs and reels start to turn to mush if I'm not careful, which I've assumed was my fault so it's good to hear that that may not be entirely true.
@@artiefischel2579 "Like a truck" is a good description! :) I use my Howard low D only for very slow things, for which the sound is very appropriate, I find, but wouldn't even try playing fast on it. It is very different from, for example, a Kerrywhistles Optima.

Hey, didn't you guys get nuked in 1984? :) I love Sheffield, played at the Town Hall venue there a few times (guitarist/vocalist with Andy Williams for many years). I've been discovering/exploring low whistles lately and this makes me look at Howard even more closely! :)
I bought this with just reed mouthpiece (there is a bit of a sale right now, if cost is an issue). I took it out of the case and played for 30 seconds and I can say - it's even better than it sounds through computer speakers.
I have been playing a carbon fiber low D (and high D and etc), from Erik the Flutemaker. The carbon fiber whistles have a simple sound and are fine for early learning. But this Howards whistle is awesome ! My lack of precision is adding to the pleasure as I explore some additional sounds before actually getting what I intended :)
I'd certainly recommend it.

What is the name of the tune you play in the video?
That kind of included plastic case is great BUT if whistle is moist when stored and left a while a fine white mold can grow there.
my impressions:
A - Airy, but not overly, a touch of flute-like tones, shaw - like
B - airiness is reduced, quite clear notes, soft
Chiff - couldn't quite place it
Reed - absolutely agree with other comments that this is recorder-like. reminds me of a tenor recorder I have. very sensitive to air pressure.

Hi Stephanie! Lovely review on this tin whistle. I have a question though. I currently own a Clarke D whistle, and a Shaw low G whistle. I fractured my wrist about 9 weeks ago, and while I am able to play the D whistle a little bit, I'm really struggling with grip on the low G. Do you have any advice or tips on different ways to play to avoid/assist the reach/stretch on holes on low whistles?
My aim is to get one of these when my ability improves again :)

can you tell what exactly is the distance between the holes? (millimeters). My fingers are very short and I'm afraid this flute will be too big for me ;)
Hi there-love your channel! I was wondering if you could answer a quick question for me: Is there any difference in the hole spacing between the Howard Classic Low D and your Mk Pro? I have very short, bony fingers and am a little concerned about not being able to comfortably cover the holes even with piper's grip. I remember you mentioning your MK Pro hole spacing was slightly closer together than some of your other Low D whistles and was curious how it compared to the Howard Classic.
Not an owner of one, but you might want to consider putting up the money for a Carbony with close spacing. Check out the Chiff and Fipple forums and you may find one for a discount.

Stephanie, do you know if those whistle heads will be for sale? Could it be that this something the maker just sent you try? The only whistle head I see on their website is the M3A. By the way, fantastic demo. The Howard whistle has notoriously gotten mixed reviews over the years and I was looking forward to your take. I also never have seen differing whistle heads offering their own tonal characteristics. What a great idea. Kudos to Howard whistles for thinking it up.

On the website only the classic mouthpiece for now (it seems), I do love the reed mouthpiece
The different mouthpieces don't seem to be available on their website? The Howard Low D comes with a classic M3 ABS resin mouthpiece, and you can get a replacement for that.
I think if you contacted them they may be able to supply them. It might be something they're trying or planning to offer in future and just haven't got available on the website right now. Unfortunately I didn't get given any info on them, just received them.

Hmm, just as I'm looking for a low whistle. That black silk model looks great with the polished brass against the black powder coating. Looks like they also offer a Low C version, though, I'm guessing it's currently unavailable as there is no actual "buy" link showing for them.
Their site also has a tin whistle finder, which is nice as you can search by key and it revealed that there are more makers offering bass whistles than I initially found. Naturally, the big bass whistles are somewhat expensive, so I'm debating either getting an affordable traditional Low D (like the Dixon one-piece) or possibly splitting the difference a bit from my current Clarke C Sweetone with a Low F whistle. Actually, with the latter, if I went with a Susato Low F I could eventually add a Low D body at a fraction of the cost and use the same head for both, so that'll probably be my plan while keeping an eye out for the Howard Black Silk Low C to become available as I just love that look yet know a lot of songs in the key of C and F.
What are the differences between the black silk and the black models? I cannot find any information online.
@carloshernandezperez6963 Pretty sure it's just the visual addition of more polished brass around the finger holes simply for a more flashy look while using all the same materials.

QUESTION : Have you found someone selling a thumb rest for a Howards Low D Whistle ? I'm using a rubber band right now. But pretty, it is not. A contoured thumb rest would be really useful for a more stable posture and so make sounds more predictable.
I haven't, but then I haven't looked. You could try looking at the various results for 'recorder thumb rests' on Google though. Plenty available. I imagine one for a larger recorder would work for a low whistle.
Which mouthpiece has the easiest to hit high notes on?
The mouthpieces change the tone of the whistle more than the responsiveness. I can't say I noticed much of a difference response wise. But I guess maybe the balanced head with soft acoustics would be your best bet...

It n is very responsive and sounds real nice...my issue was the communication...not very pleasant to communicate with the person and the other " minor" issue was that on the Howard Music site they say one gets the whistle, a case and a roll of plumbers tape- they did not send me the tape- then DO NOT tell people that they will get that in the package! Not cool! Plus, the exchange rate was very confusing" and ended up paying a lot more than if I would've ordered from Amazon- I'd just have to make sure I confirm that the whistles they have have the newer improved mouthpieces.

I have a Howard low C, which I know is more difficult than a D, but I can barely cover the holes, and I have pretty big hands, I have a 9 inch hand span but i don't seem to have enough flesh on them to properly cover the holes lol
Oh also, if you see this, I would love to see a tutorial for the Corries' song "Hush Hush" if possible, even if I have to play it on tin whistle lol

Gotta be honest, not a fan of the way this whistle looks. I like a clean metal look. And if the fipple/ labium should be metal. That's the sound generation mechanism. If it's not metal I can't accept the whistle as a whistle unless it's dirt cheap like a Clarke Sweettone or a Generation whistle. I don't mind if the head on the fipple is plastic like in the Kilkenny ones. Full metal are best but expensive. And look at me being all hoity toity without even owning a single whistle, lol, I'm just going thru all these vids to figure out what to buy.
Howard make uncoated nickel and brass whistles too. The mouthpieces have multiple special features that chance the tonal quality of the whistle. I recently made a new review on the updated versions. Be sure to check it out 👍
