Today we are going to make a couple of cedar planters out of cedar fence slats. Each planter is about 8" (w) x 7" (h) x 4' (l) and costs around $5 to make. You can get the cedar slats at your local home improvement store. You could use a different type of wood, but cedar is great at resisting rot so it is good for this type of application.
This build can easily be done with just a hand saw, some clamps, and outdoor wood glue.

This is exactly what I needed. There are a lot of over complicated builds out there.
Mine is still holding up strong. And thanks!
They look great, and you did a good job explaining the process😊
Thanks Teresia!
New sub! Great tutorial. Just getting started with wood projects and love simple things like this to hone some skills. Thanks👍🏻
Thanks for watching and good luck on your projects!
Nathan Builds I’ll need it. Lol
Beautiful work thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
Great video Nathan, just what I was looking for, but seems it becomes a bit more complicated as it moves along. Can you please do a more simple video for an older woman to be able to do this alone? Beautiful boxes!
I have a larger planter box build coming in the next week or so which is based on this. If you don't want to glue or brad nail, you can also use regular nails or screws. But I will also look into making one with just some basic tools!
Simple and wonderful ❤️
Thanks for watching!
This was a great video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Nice job! I really like these.
Thanks Suzi!

Real talk! 😁👍
wonderful build.. thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching :)
$5?? Hmmm. With all the extra equipment you have maybe $500? Lol.. I love the little planer btw.
I made a another video on how to make some stuff like this with some basic tools :)
Nice video and nice looking planters. What kind of nails did you use? It looks like you used finishing nails, but I couldn't find any finishing nails that are outdoor-proof. Thanks.
Hey - I used finish nails for my brad nailer. If you don't have one you can use something like this - they are outdoor rated: amzn.to/39vPr0Z
I like that you can do this without power tools because I don’t have any right now except for the drill 😳🤔🤣
You gotta start somewhere!
That's exactly why i'm here lol.
Doing two of these myself
I'm working on some variants right now as well actually. Good luck!
Clear explanation good job talk less big results keep up I
Thanks for the feedback!
Do you have an outline or cutlist for this build?
Unfortunately not. I just figured it out as I went.
Nice 👍
Thanks for watching!
what are the dimensions of the box? You can get cedar fence for about $2.5 to $3 but they are 5' long with dog ear.
I unfortunately am not home so I can't measure, but each is made out of two pickets that cost me $2.25-2.50 each.
Where do you find cedar that costs 5 dollars? Not at the home depot. Cedar is expensive anywhere.
I got mine from Lowes. It's still cheap near me - check out my Instagram for exact prices. Although I think pickets are now 3.10 each. Used to be $2.50.
I've just finished my raised cedar bed. I'm thinking of using the plastic also. Did you find it held too much water? I'm seeing comments on some of the other videos about even with drainage holes it holds too much water. Thanks
Hmm. I have not had a problem so far, but you could always use some stones instead if you were too concerned.
Just as an update, I have a bunch of stuff growing on all the planters that have the fabric in with no issues.
ah okay, I'm a newb so I'm sorry for the silly question, but how does water drain from this? I feel like the water will rot this right away? If anyone has built this and drilled holes for drainage, hit me up!
Hey - I left drainage slots in the bottom which allow water out. You could also drill holes. I can confirm the slots with though. I have stuff planted in them now.
Also cedar is very durable and even sitting in water will not rot for years.
You are better off using pressure treated wood made for ground contact. Cedar, while being naturally rot resistant, does not work well for ground contact usage. A quick Google search will allow you to confirm it for yourself.
Yeah, that's why I have legs. Also I would stay away from treated if you are growing food in it.
The legs doesn't change the fact thatthe wood is still in direct contact with the soil. You could line it with plastic if you wanted but there's still going to be a moisture barrier between the wood and plastic which would still be "ground contact" due the the constant moisture.
Modern pressure treated wood with ACQ is considered safe and if you decide to use a plastic liner it will be perfect fine.
Just wanted to put that information out there because everybody always assumes cedar is the best and that PT wood is dangerous.
It doesn't say how many boards
I think each comes from 2 boards
how many boards?
One board per
Sorry two per I think. It's been a bit.
@@NATHANBUILDS i bought cedar fence boards, 1 x 6 x 8' is 9.00 :) . so price has gone up....on east coast anyway :)
@@dclinks wow, was $2.50 when I bought them.
@@NATHANBUILDS cedar here is like 10$+ per board.... but the commons you can get are 5.5 wide so guess you could make a thinner version would love to see you make some plans of this this way i can see if i can make it with current costs. I wish it was 5$ for a wide board like you have lol
You can’t call it $5 when you have thousands of dollars in the equipment you use to make it 😂😂
First lol definitely didn't use thousands in equipment for this, second you could easily build this with just a circular saw or even a hand saw. Also lots of people have tools.
I see about 50 bucks worth of tools to build this. Power tools just make it a bit easier.
It annoys the hell out of me when people tell you to make something for less than $20 and then proceed to us $10K worth of tools to make something for $5. Its the entire purpose of spending thousands on tools so you can make shit cheap. If I have to spend that much on tools, I would rather go to the store, spend $100 and I'm done.
Lol, well you need something to cut the wood with and something to connect it. This can easily be made with a few basic and cheap tools. I have another video explicitly explaining how. I don't think you would expect a food recipe that calls for $20 in ingredients to also state you need a $800 range, pots, utensils, etc.
$5 bed that needs you to have tools worth of $1000+..lol sorry but I find these very useless.
You definitely only need a circular or even hand saw.
