Yes, after seeing many of the current resident's reaction to a group of young people who set up a squat in the town last year, I would say Hebden Bridge is one of the MOST bigoted towns I've known.
I visit quite a lot being just down the road as such and there are some good people there - but there are also a great many who are so far up their own rear ends it's comical. Case in point - me and my mate were on a pub crawl in the town around the time that the Fox and Goose was finally re-opened after a community buy out/takeover. We were talking to a bloke in the pub who explained the whole process of people in the community, himself included he was eager to point out, chipping in cash to save it and therefore part own the place, but he ended with "It's a Hebden thing, You wouldn't understand!". It was so hard not to laugh in his face, I incidentally worked for the Co-operative movement for nearly 20 years when I left school (never again!), the arrogance and smugness of this guy was in the red. Like this process was something unique to Hebden Bridge. Since then, and it must be 10 years or so since that happy meeting, any crawls we have done in Hebden we have always avoided the Fox and Goose like the plague - even if we start at the Stubbing Wharf we walk straight past it as we refuse to give such pompous individuals who have part ownership any of our patronage. Aside from that as I say there are some wonderful people there - but some real virtue signalers - who look down on people from outside or don't agree with their views, although they are happy to take visitors money - yes capitalism is alive and well there no matter how much some shops try to disguise it. But I do like Hebden Bridge a heck of a lot - just not the right on posers.
