  • Episode 22:
    In this episode of "The Appraiser," Colin has the pleasure of looking at a well-known 1956 Chevrolet 210 Del Ray turned SoCal Street Racer/Gasser. Built with only used and refurbished original and NOS GM parts instead of reproduction "blisterpack" ones, this one of the most thoughtfully built period correct 1960s/1970's style Gasser's Colin has ever seen. But this Bel Air isn't all beauty, it did 12:40's going 110MPH in the 1/4 mile and has a Z28 low-end built for a 7300 RPM redline. Stick around to find out why this Bel Air is worth so much!

    I have so many memories in this car. My aunt bought her Belaire new in 1956. I was born in 1960 so by the time I was 6-7 years old, that bumper was ripe for some fun. My aunt had this long driveway covered in gravel, and my cousin and I would wait behind a tree for her to back out, and we'd sneak behind the car, grab hold of the bumper, and slide all the way down the driveway ditching behind another tree at the end of the drive. She also used to take the family down to Newport beach for a week every summer. However, as I grew up, and rode with her, I was shocked we were all still alive as her driving skills were atrocious! One time while taking me from her house to mine, she couldn't follow my directions, and stopped dead on the 60 freeway! Just stopped in the slow lane, and I started freaking out, I'm telling her to move, move, you can't stop here! I drove drove with my dad a year later to the junkyard where he sold the smoking old gal for $200 bucks. Had I been anywhere near driving age I might have had an interest in the old car, but I was about 13, and my dad having just bought a new 1972 Datsun Z, I was more interested in that car, than an old beat up 56 Chevy. 😁😎👍✌🎄🎅

    I paid $10 for a 56 sitting in a field. This was 1969. Dad let me keep it in the garage to work on it. I put a 1962 283 power pack engine in it. I did extensive body work with Bondo. Tuck and grove interior, carpet. I finally had the body ready to paint. I paid a friend of my dad to spray it for $10. She was pretty.

    It's funny how back in the early 1970's there were no reproduction parts for tri fives other than body repair parts that never fit quite right anyway. A lot of people ditched the front bumpers on them right away for the gasser look plus they were pretty heavy. One of the bad things about the '56 gas filler location was the latch for the taillight assembly would fail and the taillight would fall to the open position and the cops would pull you over for that.

    I met Dan when I drove my black 57 Nomad to give an estmate..got the job..LOL plus drilled a 300 gallon per minute well..got an invite to visit their facility on my way to Baja...got a tour and while in Dan's office I said I would like to meet their Calander girl...he said he would too...advertising takes care of that..we had a laugh!
    Sold the Nomad but still have a 56 150 utility sedan used by Pacific Bell Telephone for 10 years..then purchased at auction by the shop that seviced it....I found it for sale in1979 and still own it...

    I see it's been corrected in the title but in the video it was referred to as a Del Air or Del Ray. To my knowledge they only made Bel Air models or 210s. The 210s were 6 cylinders and the Bel Air was reserved for the V8 models that had a higher level of options such as carpet and deluxe interior as well as power steering, brakes, A/C and power windows. I've seen very few tri 5s that were hard loaded with every option.

    • @denali9449
      @denali9449 Před rokem +2

      National average was $0.30 in 1956 or $3.12 in today's money. Today's average in SoCal is $4.86 or 16.2 times what we paid in 1956. Then again, cars were getting about 14 mpg on average back then compared to 25 today. In gas costs only, it was $0.021 per mile as compared to $0.124 (using the $3.12 cost) per mile . . . So we are going almost twice as far at a cost of 6x more. A dollar in 1956 has inflated to $1,001.19 today. Bottom line is that we should be driving 50's cars that got 14 mpg and paying $0.30 for a gallon of go-juice. Or maybe we should keep today's 25 mpg cars but only pay $0.52 per gallon. Too many numbers, my head hurts.

    Those License Plates are NOT original to the car.
    It should have the Yellow/Black '56 plates to be original.
    The Yellow '56 California plates were used on vehicles from 1956-1962 and I run a set on my 1961 Thunderbird.
    1963 is when the Black Plates were issued.

    There was no Del Ray model in 1956. Del Ray was offered the first year being 1958. This car is a 210 assuming the trim is original.

    This is a SEDAN not a Coupe...If it is a POST...it is a SEDAN.

    The car is worth MUCH more than $50K USD..You OBVIOUSLY do NOT know Tri Fives...That is obvious since you call it a "coupe"...The car will SELL at $65K USD or better...at this time...You could legitimately ask $70K-$75K USD for it and a buyer may buck up...cars of this quality are RISING in price...time to re-educate yourself on Tri Fives.
