Only took me over a year to realise that the verse "Lamborghini parked outside its purple like lean" has a purple Lambo for the shot. Pop needs a raise
Carti breaks language down in a way unlike any other of his contemporaries I have ever heard (and really just unlike any other rapper I know, period.) The words Carti uses as his lyrics almost lose their actual meaning and instead become these loosely connected vowels that dance around on the beat. He uses these vowels almost as rhythmic place holders, seemingly placed carefully between the major rhythmic elements of the beat. Focusing on the vowels so much makes it easy for him to come up with some really nice flows and and fun rhymes. I think a great example for how he breaks down words is “Cancun”. Seriously, holy shit, its so amazing. Just the way he makes those words and phrases SOUND is so fantastic! “Cancun” is a great experience when you imagine that hes not even saying words but sounds, then its really clear what i mean with this i think Carti also utilises pauses in the beat and his delivery masterfully and sometimes he lets you wait a couple more beats into a bar for a very satisfying pay off when he finally starts rapping (The chorus of “RIP Yams” is a great example for this as well as the pauses before he starts rapping the chorus in “Foreign”). Another great example for his use of pauses and how well it can work is his verse on “Switchin Lanes” by Pierre Bourne, again coming in focusing heavy on the vowels and the feeling of the delivery, the overall sound and not the meaning of the lyrics. As a place holder for his rapping during these pauses he often uses ad-libs. I see them as Carti holding the tension/ suspense while the listener is waiting for him to come in to rap the main parts of the song. With his omnipresent ad-libs he always lets the listener know that he is a presence, that he WILL come in, that its just a matter of seconds for his verse or chorus to start. His ad-libs are also a great tool to establish his character/ personality and his charisma as a rapper (this is crucial). His trademark ad-libs let you know immediately who you are about to listen to and if you can meet his music with an open mind it can be very rewarding to finally “get” his appeal. (Also cool if you dont like it of course, not trying to preach here.) I also find his delivery and lyricism to be so catchy that even his verses sound like choruses. Random lyrics and phrases often get stuck in my head and it rarely ever matters wether those are part of a chorus or a verse. Carti seems to be unable to open his mouth and not deliver a rap that is somehow 10 times catchier than any pop song I have ever heard, front to back. I like to think that Carti is a rapper like many people are singers: Heavy emphasis on the vowels and on feelings/ emotions (or vibe). Often the direct meaning of the lyrics is second to the emotions expressed in the delivery of said lyrics. That being said, his delivery is unapologetically laid back, he is in FULL control while still being totally relaxed. That feeling of relaxation translates very well into his songs and I have yet to find another rapper who sounds this fucking cool. Now, even though I have spent quite some time now saying that his lyrics are not as important as other aspects of his music, I still want to say some things about them. For example, how hypnotic his use of repetition is: Carti has some kind of tribal quality in his music. He uses these mind numbing lyrics and repetitions to draw the listener into his endlessly repeated chants that work so well. There is no beginning or end, just a state of ‘being’, a moment that is other times only captured by being in a drugged out haze yourself. Especially combined with the perfect kind of production his music can sound incredibly ethereal. (I think a great example of ethereal qualities in his music is “Location” and my favorite mind-numbing chant of his is the tribal sounding song “Top”.)
