The ultimate revenge to those who call you a failure 💪
Industry gives an insider's view of the blackbox of high finance following a group of young bankers as they forge their identities within the pressure-cooker environment and sex and drug-fuelled blitz of international bank Pierpoint & Co's London office.
In this episode, a short phone call between Harper and Felim leads to potentially disastrous consequences for the Rican deal. Harper must find a way to rectify it in less than 24 hours. Meanwhile, Yasmin is given her first glimpse of Private Wealth Management at a client dinner, but a misjudgement leads to humiliation. Yasmin pursues an alternative route to impress at PWM and escape FX.

Best thing about this scene is Harper uses her previous experience with a mismatched FX trade in season 1 to gain information, that she then uses to her advantage. Proof that there us learning ftom your mistakes.

@@drpresholaIt's a series called Industry. It's available on HBO.
Whole scene is a bit unrealistic though. You wouldn’t need to raise the foreign currency before doing the trade. You do that after when you know how much you need to buy. Even if her fund is GBP, she’d buy the US asset and then go out and buy the USD to settle it when she knows what price she got.
The most important takeaway of this scene is... if you're a billionaire you can make an orchestra of human puppets sweat blood and dance for their lives in order to get some crumbs of your wealth while it's another stress-free day for you at the tennis club.
Yes, exactly
That's insight
Billionaires work over 90 hour work weeks........you don't know what you're talking about
Agreed and I’m speaking from experience, not as a billionaire. The most important takeaway for me is that woman still have to prove their worth in a male dominated industry like finance. But your point is certainly a by product of this. 😔

This and future episodes give insight into Jesse's alpha as an investor. It's not about fundamentally understanding a business or macro trends. It's about exploiting price discrepancies and tells. It's actually a smart turn as he was initially billed as almost a fortune teller with his successes following the pandemic.

3:58 Actress playing Harper is great! You can really see the stress and how overwhelmed she was through that at the end, combined with the music it makes for a great scene.
Explained: Harper (Girl who is trying to sell a trade to a client)gets info from a client (woman who wanted to buy 250 mil USD) over the phone in order to try and understand what move that client is making (she guesses that the client who is buying US dollars is going long on a US asset i.e. buying a certain stock). Harper then feeds this information to another client (guy at tennis court), who now wants to buy the same stock from the traders, since he knows someone else is about to purchase 250 million dollars worth of shares (guy at tennis court believes this will move the price of the stock up, so he wants to buy). The traders have 50 million shares of the stock on their books, and the argument they are having at the end is over the price the traders want to sell it at. Tennis player guy wants to buy at a lower price, $44 a share, but trader (Rishi, guy in white shirt) who has the stock wants to sell for $45 a share. At the end, they compromise and the tennis player guy agrees to buy 50 million shares from the traders books at $44.75 a share, AND the tennis guy wants the traders to buy an additional 25 million shares of the stock after market open at the same price. The tennis guy also says something about 25% of the ADV, (average daily trading volume), but I am not sure what this refers to.
He simply set the limit of the order volume to be no more than 20% of the average daily volume. So instead of executing the additional 25 mil buy at 44.75 in one hit (essentially showing his hand to the market), he orders the trader to work the order such that he is no more than 20% of ADV...so drip feeding into market vs coming out guns blazing. The 50 mil on the traders book would just be executed as a block trade and get crossed vs going on market.
Good job all around team, very nice
Well explained, folks. That’s how a real trading team works.🎉

Rishi (dark skin guy yelling) is the trader that executes the trade.

@@ishmaelm1932 Both of you are right. I am a trader and I have no idea what the relevance of what they are doing is. Now you dont even need sales desk unless its your own structured product that you are selling.
Amazing show! Would be great if BBC would get a well known trader to walk us through this intense trade!
hehe i knew only traders will get that when i heard about ticks
I was on a reading desk for years. I can give you a full run down hahaha it’s definitely like a foreign language. Basically stock prices and bond prices are correlated. How they are correlated depends on a wide range of factors. They (the firm) screwed up and the trader talked to the guy (on the tennis court) to be on the other side of the bet (trade) that way the firm (and the traders) could hedge (mitigate risk) on the position they opened prior. The lady the trader speaks with that gives her a “tick” means that she’s not messing around and her price is her price. So she plays her hand and tells the trader in a discreet way that she is planning to buy when the market opens (which is why the trader hangs up so quickly to try and locate inventory for her investor) she begins talking with the other trader who has an inventory of 50,000,000 or 5,000,000 bonds (not 100% clear what he meant by 50,000,000- either $ value or # of bonds) at $1000 a piece (bonds are priced in terms of $1000, so when the trader is quoting 45, he is willing to sell it at $.45 on the $ (a massive loss depending on where they bought in at) so when the guy on the tennis court says “Limit $44.75”, he is saying he is willing to buy the bonds at a maximum of $22,375,000, or 44.75% of $50,000,000, which means the firm is able to exit their position. Yes, at a loss, but the worst trades are the ones you hold too long. Better to cut losses and live to fight another day.
The explanation above is right but not for this scene. A few scenes before this one, is clear that this place PierPoint bought a block of shares for another client. They bought off $3.3Bn trade at a 3% discount. That is, as long as PierPoint can sell off this stage for $3.2Bn or more, they’ll make money.
Apparently, at start of trading the trader (Rishi) is still holding 50mm shares currently valued at $45/sh, or approx $2.5 billion position that he needs to move off his books.
The buyer (guy who was playing tennis) says he’ll buy all 50mm shares at $44.75/sh, so effectively the trader got to unload his entire $2.5Bn plus position at only a $12.5mm hit.
Presumably they’ve already sold off the other $800mm to others ($3.3Bn less what he sold at the end) - so the $100mm total fee potential on this trade (3% of $3.3Bn) was largely retained, and they only lost $12.5mm on the trade - so the firm made nearly $88mm on that trade, plus whatever commissions the desk made on facilitating the trade for the buyer(s)

That’s how I felt when I called computershare to sell all my GameStop shares 🦍
Which episode is that?
The fact is that BTC symbolises the future of cryptocurrency, and traders are wondering if now is the best moment to trade, I feel you should examine the situation more closely before jumping to any conclusion. BTC's price has been fluctuating over the previous days, signaling that the market has become unstable and that is it impossible to anticipate whether it will go bearish or bullish. Others are patient, while others continue to trade with no risk. It all depends on the pattern you're trading and the source of your signal;
A lot of investors has restrained from the market because of the volatile and sudden crashed in the market.but I've learnt to understand that trading is quite different from just holding. There are short sell for bearish and long sell for bullish.
There are a lot of strategies to make tongue wetting profits especially in a down market but such sophisticated trades can only be carried out by proper market experts.

a lot of criminals in the same room
Bit unrealistic. Doing the FX trade to settle the foreign asset would be done after the trade is filled. The idea that the head PM of a major hedge fund would be putting in FX orders just for settlement, much less that they’d know all the details of it, is a bit ridiculous. Equities settle T+2 so she wouldn’t need to raise the dollars ahead of the trade. Most trading systems literally have a button that would create the FX trade based on how many dollars they’d have to deliver, because they won’t know that until the equity trade is filled.
Irl she would not be a usual suspect.
