The Forest of Dean is in England, located on the Welsh side of the river Severn in Gloucestershire. The Forest is the birthplace of composer Herbert Howells and, later, was home of Derek Bourgeois. Howells had taught Bourgeois composition and very much inspired Derek's work and career, eg. both taught music at the St. Paul's Girls School in west London. In this work the opening theme is taken from Howell's keyboard work "Lambert's Clavichord" and is called "De La Mare's Pavane" (czcams.com/video/sY2UKV1BX0A/video.html). Bourgeois then goes on to put this theme through several variations.
