I love the Fuel line in general, and if I take the plunge on the ex5 or the ex7 again it will be my 3rd Trek bike over time. I think Trek just does it right they make great bikes for people who just do not have the funds for bikes like Yeti, Evil, Pivot, etc.
Thanks again for this review James. Your review of the CPAL3 made me buy it last year and I have a tickling feeling with the Fuel EX 5 too after watching this vid!
@@rockie0708 Most mtb's these days(outside of a few like the Juliana) are unisex. It's all just based off of your height, reach and inseam. Best way to figure out the bike for you is do a demo day. For example I usually ride an XL on most brands because I'm 6'2" 185lbs(84kg), but I found when riding the Mondraker Foxy R, for example, a large was better because of the long reach on that particular bike. Hope this helps and let me know if you need clarifications.
I know alot of people "dis" Trek for their bikes and company proprietary stuff, but I have to tell you I love my EX5. Now granted, I did upgrade the brakes (I hit some long/nasty decents with my big ole 185 lb. bod), converted to a 12 speed XT drivetrain and put on some Maxxis tires, but I still saved just shy of $500 overall had I bought the 8. I am totally happy as this thing climbs super well and is nimble on the downhills and singletracks. Plenty of bike for my old self (58). Very interesting video, I have just released one on the 2014 Fuel Ex6 on my channel, it is really interesting to see how the designed has progressed. Great channel 👍🏻
It does just as much stuff as any other bike can. I put Hope hubs on the stock rims and upgraded the drivetrain to Sram Nx/Gx. Other than that its solid. The rear shock and forks will come but dont need too yet.

Excellent review of what this bike is and the changes that they've made for 2020. I really wish I could have gotten this one... but, I really can't complain however. I got the 2019 demo bike 30% off (nobody rode it, they all demoed more expensive bikes)... and they took my whole season of demo money and applied it so I walked out the door only paying $1,000 out of pocket for a pretty much new bike full warranty. Being a software developer with bad credit it's hard to pay $5,000 at once for a bike however it's easy to buy nice components over time :) Some of the positives that you mention the metric shocks for example (yours 55mm vs 52.5 with floater) the Boost spacing is present on my bike however yours has a 15 mm larger frame for the medium, more fork (10mm more travel and 1 degree slacker head tube... 🤔 so over forking my 2019 would achieve the same thing ) and much better wheels which I will upgrade also. Ya I can't complain. All in all if you look their frame-set sell for $2,000 anyway so I kind of take the ex5 is just that a bike that you intend to upgrade. even still yours has much better quality components for 2020 and the frame is definitely nicer. sweet video, love the comparisons!
Sounds like you got an awesome deal. I think the thing that is missed (Maybe I perpetuate this as well?) is that just because there is a new thing doesn't mean the old one is any less good. Tech moves forward but rarely does it make the previous design obsolete. Basically your bike was awesome last year when it was "new", but that also means it is awesome this year too!
@@Jamesthebikeguy Well said! What your video did was had me go back to when my design was new for the Fuel and that was 2017. That year it won trail bike of the year. (MBR? Bike Radar? Some strange choices on the build. They went with the slightly nicer Deluxe Select+ shock, but stayed with the very low end Recon RL fork. The 10 speed Deore vs SX eagle is a wash, the Eagle has better gear range, but SX eagle falls apart quickly (My Giant Trance is currently in the shop getting its shifter and derailleur replaced with GX eagle as the SX shifter broke on my ride this morning). The MT 200 brakes are also well below the capabilities of the rest of the bike, XT rotors and metallic pads would help, but SLX 4 pots are probably in this bikes future if you get one. I would definitely upgrade the fork early on this bike a Pike or Fox 34 would both work well on it, and probably get some 12 speed SLX on it too.
Thanks for your review, may I ask the front and rear suspension can be lock? also I wanna know if its possible to change the groupset to Shimano SLX 2x11 speed that I own?

Nice paint job on it. 66.5 HTA wow they slacked it out, my 2019 is 67.7 in high position. For my trails and riding style I don't think I would want to go any slacker then I am already. Ex 5 this year looks WAY better than last years.
67.7? My 2019 ex 5 27.5 was 66.5 stock..it’s now 65.4 with the upgraded front end. Cane creek helm set at 170mm travel. Rear shock I replaced with a 210x55 in place of the stock 210x55. I do agree with most things you say but the suspension is not good. I'm 125 pounds and it recommends that I put in >70 psi in the fork but I have had to put 110 psi in it which is a lot more than it recommends. Same with the rear shock.

I weigh 280 , will suspension hold my weight?
See the reply on the first time you asked
I love the bike but it is squeaky. Do you have the same issues?
They will if you get them contaminated
@@Jamesthebikeguy
What would you recommend i do?
Thanks, just regular lithium grease right?
Nice bike.. i like bike to but i dont have money to buy
Soon!
Should ride it
But, I do not know how to ride a bike.
Jamesthebikeguy well, nice static review of a bike that has not gotten the attention it deserves.
@@Jamesthebikeguy wat
Does it come with pedals?
Not really. I think they come with "nylon test ride pedals" but really you should be selecting something like the Race Face Chester pedals or the like.
@@Jamesthebikeguy ok. Thanks!
Can I fit a 160 or 170 mm fork in it
You could but I don't think you would want to with the rest of the bike, and I am sure it voids any frame warranty.
@@Jamesthebikeguy so what will be the ideal upgrade for the fork, better than recon rl
This or vitus mythique VRX
The one you like better.
Jamesthebikeguy which one would you like better if you compare the two? Or are they the same?

How much
Check with your local bike shop.
Think they should slacken the head angle though, i have a 63 Head angle, 66 is too steal
Not a chance. That would ruin the bike and you would have "flop" for days
@@Jamesthebikeguy flop?
@@mtbjay5227 Yes. Do some reading about HA and the rest of the geometry anyway. 63 is stupid slack and would trash a bike like this. HA, Offset, and Trail makes a huge difference in how a bike feels and going extreme can really negatively impact handling. This article is amazing for understanding geo, granted its based on road bikes but the concepts are the same. Get educated: cyclingtips.com/2018/11/the-geometry-of-bike-handling-its-all-about-the-steering/
@@Jamesthebikeguy I'm a bike mechanic mate, 63 feels fine you just need a proper place to ride it, I ride trails which are extremely steep and the bike comes to life around there
@@Jamesthebikeguy I'm not saying make it 63 HA just needs to be a little bit slacker like a 64
33lbs?!?
Unfortanely, its not in my parents budget
Get a job, that’s how I’m trying to afford the bike and then you can choose your own budget😉
@@tyrides6566 but there is another problem, school have no time😄
markoseln not tryna argue but I’m a high school student and definitely can find time for a job and don’t forget summer started its a good time to make money towards getting what you need
@@tyrides6566 yea,that a good time,in my country high paid is 800 to 1000 dollara

This costs $2000! For the same price, Canyon sells the Neuron MTB spec'd with FOX34 and Sram GX Eagle! Not NX - GX! That same bike from Trek? The Fuel EX8 for a whopping $3400. Don't get ripped off.
Sure comparing a closeout sale bike is on sale. Otherwise the Neuron 6.0 is 2k and nearly identical specs.
