Could it be that this chest has a higher rate of pulling gold equipment than all the others? I usually like to spend my coins on the chest where you can choose the respect items but equipment there seems to be much more rare

I got Sunind invite… 2 TIMES. As a f2p it SUCKS because she is basically unusable at r1 and wasted 450 mathom chests of hipe

I've gotten nothing but t3 evil invites they've definitely weighted the letters to the alignment you don't have. I've gotten 3 Skalhelm invites and she's not on my wishlist

You're not wrong. Some commanders definitely use their r1, but you need a lot more for sure.
