Not every player will do anything to win, that is not as common as you would think.

There is a famous clip of Pirlo chilling on the goal post during a corner kick. It was obvious in his quality that he didn't care about winning. Lorenzo Insigne for TFC played poorly his first year and a half and early this year basically admitted that now he will put in effort.
When a player has won higher titles than MLS/Concacaf, they don't necessarily care about winning every single game and just come here for the American experience and to retire. The point is that that's not the case with Messi. He is still playing with the same intent that he always has.
