I used half the "internets-recommended" panacur dose and it wiped out my massive hydra infestation in three days with one treatment. Yay!. Problem? I can't have nerites in this tank now. Months later and the tank is still toxic to them. Pond snails and shrimp are fine, but nerites die. The reason is that panacur's active ingredient is not water soluble. It never dissolves, so some amount of it will be settled in your tank for quite a long time, even though you can't see it.

So I took everything out, boiled what I could and let the rest soak in scalding water in the tank. It cleared almost all of them out. Was it extreme? Ok. I have a fresh water pipefish tank - heavily planted with sulawesi shrimp (its pretty awesome). I have removed my pipefish in the past and added 3 spotted gouramis until seemingly hydra is gone. It never is. My pipefish only accept live microfood, bbs, moina etc. I cant simply leave a gourami to live with them because it will out compete my pipefish for the bbs. So tell me, what do i do? These are very sensitive fish i do not want to dose with chems.

I have yet to see fish activitly eat these. I have certain nano predatory fish in my shrimp tank. The hydra are at the surface of the tank. I have cut back on all live nano foods. The only thing that works at killing them is dog dewormer. Which has not effected snails only pond snails. The rams horn and Malaysian snails do not skip a beat. I do pull my rabbit snails when I treat a the tank.

UGH. I just dealt with hydra in my SPARKLING GOURAMI tank, & my shrimp tank. The gourami's didn't eat them, and would be stung by them :( Granted, they're well fed. I ordered No Planaria, which took care of it 😊

My shrimp tank is blooming with Hydra 😑 I have another tank full of guppies and i heard they will eat hydra. I'm worried they'll eat my shrimp too lol but maybe a small guppy would be okay? It's been so hard to find the right answer without using chemicals 😢

Very interesting that Bettas don't go for hydra very much. I would have guessed they'd be great predators of them.

  • @DoobityDoob

Interesting, I have an observation though. My 20 gallon tank doesn't have any fish or shrimp only common snails (it's at the the end of its cycle) so I never added any brine shrimp or other sources of food, yet I have seen a bunch of hydras pop up. I also have a lot of rhabdocoela worms, my theory is that the hydras are eating the rhabdocoela worms because they are so small? Because there aren't any other food sources?

I just saw some of these guys near my filter intake. Tank is 1.5 months old, loads of plants, some bladder and ramshorn snails, but no fish. I don’t put any food in the tank at all. I’m about a week into a bacterial bloom after rescaping it; wasn’t planning to add fish for a little while. So what are these little hydra dudes eating? bacteria in my water column?

Sorry to ask an off topic question here...
I have some electric blue rams which are intolerant of nitrates, ammonia and nitrites.
I always feel a bit of fear to use liquid fertilizers thinking that it adds nitrates in aquarium and might stress the fish, just in case my plants couldn't utilise it.
    I use tropica specialized fertilizer.
Pls let me know if my fears are valid..

Hydra might be the most blown out of proportion pest in the hobby since bladder snails. Hydra are a sign that your water is clean and your tank’s ecosystem can support life. Too often people’s reaction to finding something in their tank is “how do I get rid of it” instead of “why is it here”

This species is green because they have a symbiotic relationship with a type of algae. Other species are clearish-white or light brown. 👍
