  • The minute we got our travel trailer for full-time RV living, I knew I would want to paint the interior walls and remove the window treatments that were factory installed. This week I walk you through how to prep and paint the interior of your RV including how to remove the blinds on the windows.
    Step 1: Remove the window treatments (1:10)
    Step 2: Fill holes (3:28)
    Step 3: Clean the walls (5:10)
    Step 4: Tape (7:26)
    Step 5: Cut-in (9:17)
    Step 6: Paint (9:29)
    See between scenes and end scenes for additional notes and tips for best results.

    Simply White was your mistake. During my college years, I painted 1800 apartments and houses and learned that better quality paint with at least a little pigment in it was vastly better than pure white. Just go one shade in ANY direction for an off-white and two coats are plenty.

I noticed in the afters that is all painted white also but I didn't hear any special comments about differences in painting that section. I'm guessing you had to do a lot more sanding and prep to get the paint to adhere. Thanks for any tips! • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Jessie, that part was definitely more of a challenge and was what made us decide NOT to paint the cabinets. I did not do much different other than sanding it a lot more. We’ve gotten a couple scratches on that part which have been easy to touch up. If I did it again I would sand it a ton, apply the spray cleaner and then use a spray paint primer because I feel that adheres to plastic type stuff much better. I didn’t do that because I was too lazy to lay down tons of drop cloths, but I would do it next time.

    Great video!!! Currently starting the same project! Did you sand the wallpaper? I thought you mentioned it in the video but didn't see you do it.
    We have been researching and have decided to sand and then use Gliddean's Gripper primer. Apparently, a lot of RV bloggers/vloggers have had to repaint their entire rig after their previous job peeled right off that hulk RV wallpaper over time. They all recommend sanding and using Gripper before painting.
    My question is whether you've had to caulk along edges and corners after removing wallpaper wrapped wooden trims that are stapled in along the corners and ceiling. I'm trying to decide whether to just remove it all and caulk those gaps. Or to paint over it. What would you recommend??

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 5 lety

      I didn't sand the wallpaper (just the holes I filled after taking out the screws). I used the spray which cleaned and roughed up the wallpaper. SO much easier than sanding it.

    I honestly think you would have gotten a brighter feel if the cabinetry were painted white instead. The wallpaper seemed to have a gray undertone it didn't seem bad. But the dark brown is the problem, the cushions, the cabinetry it was overwhelming and dark. As long as you are happy with the end results that's all that matter.

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 4 lety +1

      I 💯 agree that painting the cabinets would have brightened it up a lot. The problem is that the cabinets aren't "real" wood so it would get scratched up so easily and look terrible after being used even a little bit. A year later I am so so happy we didn't paint the cabinets. I did reupholster the cushions in a lighter fabric though and that helped SO much!

    We found that silicone around our shower did not adhere the paint. Even when we cleaned, sanded and painted. The wallpaper they use in RVs is vinyl and paint is difficult to adhere to it unless you sand down all the walls. Any suggestions?

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 3 lety

      We had silicone in a couple spots too and it was a bit tricky at first, but what I found worked was getting a rustolium spray paint primer (the ones that say they stick to anything) and spraying the heck out of it. It took 2 coats of the primer spray to get it all, but once I did that and let it dry fully , the paint held. For the wallpaper, I found that using liquid sandpaper or a chemical stripper (as mentioned in the video) worked to be a good base before priming. You definitely need to prime before painting though. Hope this helps!

    We just got our first RV class A 32 ft., 2005. I want to paint the ugly wallpaper especially in the bedroom. Question? Wouldn't it be better to start with a primer first?
    And what can I do about the ugly window valances & shades in the bedroom? They only bother me in the bedroom. :-(

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 5 lety +2

      The valances can be removed, which I show how to do in the video. A primer would definitely make the project go better especially if you are just planning to go over it with white paint. I did the paint/primer mix and it took several coats. The fact that it's textured made it take a little longer.

    RV is looking good guys! I didn't even think about decorating/renovating when looking into buying RVs. Are you going to keep the bunk mattress covers the same?

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 6 lety

      Thanks! I am going to keep them on there because they are perfectly fit to the weird shaped mattresses. I think I'll get a coverlet or something to tuck over it so you don't actually see it. They are pretty ugly, but super soft! My kids usually sleep on top of their main blanket (or kick them off the bed) and just use their special blankie to keep warm. So, basically I'll do something to make it look better, but I will not get rid of them. Does that make sense? I'll make sure I cover it in a future video.

    White color are you thinking of doing the cabinets?

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 6 lety +2

      So, we PLANNED on doing the upper cabinets white and the lower cabinets green. However we have decided to leave them. A friend of mine who is fulltiming right now has been on the road for 5 weeks and she said her cabinets are chipping like crazy already. I ultimately decided that the chipping would bother me way too much. So I decided to keep the original cabinets for now.

    Did you pull the wallpaper that was already on there off or did you just paint over the existing wallpaper

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 5 lety +5

      I just painted over the existing wallpaper. The wallpaper had a look that made it look textured, but it was just flat so after prepping it properly, it was just as easy to paint over it. There is a noticeable seam behind the stove but I planned to do the sticker tile backsplash which covered it up. To be honest I have no idea what the walls are like in an RV under the wallpaper, and I didn’t want to get into a project out of my skill set. So yes, I just painted over it! Hope this helps

    Why would you prime next time instead of using a two in one?

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 5 lety +2

      I did use a 2-in-1 this time and it still took 4 coats. I think if I used a straight primer it would have given a heavier first coat and then I could have gone over it with the 2-in-1 and it would have saved me some time extra coats.

    • @RaisingBrave
      @RaisingBrave  Před 4 lety

      That could have been a good idea. I had all the windows open and a fan going so I wasn’t concerned about circulation and I feel gloves would have gotten in the way. This video was also filmed in 2018, so there were no concerns of the virus (plus I was by myself in my own camper). Thanks for the suggestion though! I recommend people do what makes them feel comfortable and safe while doing their projects.
