    HAPPY DECEMBER 15TH EVERYONE!!! Instead of participating in Vlogmas this year, i'll be dedicating all my December uploads to THRIFTMAS! I'll be posting daily vlogs in the lead up to Christmas, and i'll only be posting about THRIFT SHOPPING!!! Videos like.... Thrift flip, thrift haul, thrift with me, thrift makeover, thrift store challenge, Christmas thrift, anything and everything I can think of to get into the holiday spirit while keeping costs low and keeping my consumption sustainable!
    In todays video, i'm showing you all the planter pots that i've bought from thrift stores over the past few weeks, and which plants i'll be putting in them! I'm going to be using these plants to decorate my guest bedroom, and I can't wait to paint the new shelf I bought for them. Which pot was your favourite, and what sort of ideas do you have for the ones i'm going to be flipping?

    You can add rocks to the bottom of a pot without drainage holes so that the plants can drain into the pot. I it's called french drain

  • @centrifugedestroyer2579

    Hey Alex, I've noticed you're growing avocados and mangos from the seed. I've grown a whole bunch of avocados and more recently a couple of mangos. A few words of advice: Don't panic or be discouraged if your little mango drops its newest leaves. Mine tend to drop the immature leaves very quickly if something is slightly wrong, but the plant itself isn't close to death or anything. As long as the plant has at least one established leaf it has good chances of surviving. I started with 5 and 4 of them survived and all have ~15 leaves each. Avocados on the other hand are tough bastards and can be fast growers if you don't prune them. I have an avocado that sprouted in late March, that I only pruned in November (whoops) that is now ~175 cm tall. They don't really grow braches until you cut off the buds at the top. I would also like to recommend growing citrus trees from the seeds. They are super easy to sprout and care for and lovely little plants. Your climate should be perfect for them. I've grown various citrus trees for about 5 years now and they've always brought lots of joy to me : )

    Beautiful!!!! Love all the plants!!!! I think the large purple ombre bowl used to be a wash basin like you'd see on an old vanity. Usually it'd come with a matching pitcher and lay on a vanity to pour water in to wash yourself before indoor plumbing... supposedly went out of favor by 1930's, so could be quite old! Love the swirly pink and gold planter too! Also, that tray with the gold handles that you spray painted pink could possibly make for a great tray to put your wicker planters on top of so you can water them and the spillage will go into that tray. Thank you so much for posting every day! Feeling spoiled and happy to see a new one each day!!!! :)

    Peace Lily’s need plenty of water & maybe put a plastic dish at the bottom of the baskets to catch extra water. Or some stones or something so the plants aren’t so deep into the basket

  • @saija0305
    @saija0305 Před 3 lety

    Alex you can put plates bottom of your baskets and that way you don't have to take plants out to water them.
    And you can make any pot self watering very easily.
    On bottom of pot next to wall of your pot you have to put small tube that is litle bit longer that your pot is and is slanting on bottom side, next you put expanded clay pebbles (this is better) or small rocks on bottom of pot.
    On top of that you put round piece of thin fabric or piece of old stockings, you put fabric/stockings same way that self watering pot separator is (in Google there is good pictures of cross-section pictures of the pot) and top of that good mix of potting soil.
    In here in Finland we have potting soil mix what is made for self watering pots, but the special thing in that is mycorrhiza that you can buy separetly and mix your own.
    And then you just plant the plants 😊
    Sorry for the long writing 😅

    rocks in the deep pots! also, a ceramic bit on a drill would make any of those pots have drainage.

  • @grandy2875
    @grandy2875 Před 3 lety

    For any of the bowls/pots you think you might want to plant directly into, drill some drainage holes in to bottom. Make sure you put masking tape over the spot you want to drill, it will help prevent them from cracking/shattering, and use a sharp drill bit, preferably one for glass or ceramic. When you go to pot them up, place a piece of either fly-screen, shade cloth or hessian in the base before putting the potting mix in. It'll help to keep the soil in the pot...and always use a good quality slow-release fertilizer, like Osmocote or Thrive, and water them in with a fish emulsion like Seasol, or Charlie Carp, it'll give the plants a really healthy start and help reduce transplant shock.
    I hope this all doesn't come across as bossy...it's just stuff I've learned over the years that seems to work...

    YEEEESSSSS i love this series. I never really thrifted before and this has changed my mind. You might have to hunt for good stuff but it is out there.
    Pro Tip: if you buy a diamond drill bit you can drill holes in any of those pots except for maybe that glass one. That is what I do so I can plant directly in the decorative pots. Then I'm not limited by the grower's pot. I buy the bamboo saucers from amazon to put under all my pots.

    Alex,
    If you really wanted to plant them in the larger pots without holes you could put a drainage layer in. This system can also help with watering once you get the hang of it as you don’t waste any water. The water that gets trapped in the drainage layer will evaporate over time and essentially water the plant for you. The idea is to just keep the roots from getting too damp and rotting. Just don’t over water them and the system works great. There is a CZcams channel called SerpaDesigns who will show this better than I can explain it but... I’ll give it a shot.
    How to make a drainage layer...
    1.) get a bag of medium size gravel ( or size appropriate for the pots)
    2.) set gravel in the bottom of the pot make sure to get a good amount is in as this part will hold the excess water. ( this step really depends on the size of the pot but an inch (2.54cm) is probably good)
    3.) get some window screen/mesh. The holes of the mesh needs to be large enough to let water drain and small enough to keep the potting soil out of the gravel.
    4.) cut mesh to the shape of pot and set on top of the gravel.
    5.)plant as normal.

    I think the big white to pink ombré bowl would be SO AMAZING as a pastel zen garden! Imagine you fill it with white sand and rather than regular rocks you can add pastel crystals and shells. I think it would go so nice with the aesthetic of the room, as well as give your guests a way to destress.

    This reminds me of my irl story:
    Some years ago when I was getting into gardening, overtaking our garden from my mom into my care, I was trying out new gardening methods, strictly following moon and plant cycles etc. My grandma as a joke told me she has heard if you talk to pumpkins they will grow bigger. Sounds stupid, but what if it works?... So that year I had been scammed by my local plant seed vendor and instead of average sized pumpkins I soon discovered they were mammoth pumpkins (they are enormous), and that made me wonder, If I talk to one of them, how big I can grow it? So I choose my victim and without touching it (they hate being touched) every day I started to talk to one of them, it was at the time size of average pumpkin. I was telling it about what's happening in garden etc., just small chit chats. After about 3 days the pumpkin shriveled up and became tiny and died... it looked like those shrunken heads from amazon jungle. The pumpkin must have been damaged or idk not my fault or so I thought. So I tried it again. It died, this time in 4 days time...
    I'm not gonna be talking with pumpkins again.

    I keep seeing people to tell you to put rocks in the bottom of pots (which is a great idea!) BUT DON'T BE AFRAID TO RE-POT YOUR BABIES!! Given the size of most of your pots they would probably benefit from having more room for root growth. If you do commit to re-potting some of them you should still put a layer of rock at the bottom of each pot to help aerate the root and to also give your soil some mineral diversity. You could also totally replant all of the baby succulents/cactus babies into that big bowl you have. That would look ridiculously cute.
