The only thing I could see getting in our way is terrible level design! But could that even happen?
Spoiler Alert: It does.

Christian Whitehead made and completed Sonic 3 and Knuckles, but Sega hasn't released it.
They never will....
I only remember Whitehead showing a proof of concept video. I don't remember him ever saying he completed it, which would actually mean Sega said yes, which they didn't, most likely due to legal issues regarding the game's music, some of which was done by Michael Jackson's team of musicians.
SurvivorJackGaming it could've been that he worked on it, but then got hired to make Sonic Mania and put the project on hold. Give it until 2018 and I think they could do it.
P Î S c E STM you have an optimistic outlook on it.
Piotr Wojciechowski no no no, it was already confirmed by Aaron Webber on stream that the only reason a 3&K remaster doesn't exist is because Mania does

In my opinion, Stardust Speedway was very easy. I don’t get why people say it’s hard.
@@newkid9807 no u bastard
SAME, i dare anyone to try to go slow in the level.
The boss is kinda jarring, but it's the easiest to get to the past and future
very easy i dont understand why people say its hard
It's not hard, it's just chaotic and hyperactive as heck and impossible to maneuver with any amount of real agency and purpose.
And here I thought I was the only one who didn't really enjoy CD. But same boat. I liked the concept, the themes, the music (albeit not as much as any of the Genesis titles, JP or US version), introduction of the official Metal Sonic... just... not playing the game itself unfortunately. :/
One of the other problems I had with it that you only barely touched on is Eggman. In addition to most of his fights being awkwardly easy and goofy, the fact that most of them only take 3 hits to kill is a bit of a sacrilege to anyone who grew up with the Genesis trilogy. I never understood why they opted for 3 hits instead of the tried and true 8, with 16 on final bosses. I know it paralleled Sonic 2 in terms of release, so the 8 hit thing wasn't exactly a tradition yet but.. still.. you can really see that the teams were harshly split between CD and 2 in terms of their vision of what Sonic should play like. /2cents
Naoto Ohshima directed the game in Japan while Yuji Naka went to the USA to work on Sonic 2 with STI after getting in a fight with Sega over creative freedom. Sonic CD is what happens when you put your art guy in charge of game design.
I'm going to have to agree, I really loved this game when growing up, but now I realised how short and boring it is...
16 on final bosses? I thought it was 12? At least on Sonic 2 anyway.
Don't even get me started with the secrets
Okami Amaterasu Yeah, even in the other classic games, I don’t recall any of the final bosses taking 16 hits. That didn’t make them any less frustrating for me, though.
did u imply sonic 4 > sonic cd?
he also implied sonic 06 > sonic cd
If so, I feel the same way.
I can say that I had a much more enjoyable time with Sonic 4 than Sonic CD.

Sonic CD was directed by Naoto Oshima who believed that Sonic has some storytelling and exploration gameplay potential.
I think that to some degree he succeded to deliver that, if you actively try to find those generators this game becomes really fun, also gameplay forces you to remember level layouts rather quickly.
Art direction and music are just perfect to me.
This game also has some nasty cons, level design while enforces exploring and remembering levels is clunky in many places (hello there Wacky Workbench), and bosses quality is ranging from meh to terrible (Collision Chaos boss, I am looking at you)
Sonic CD is enjoyable for me, it is really fresh experience, problem is that its diffrent, speed and momentum based gameplay arent the focus here, but exploration, figuring out how to navigate through these levels is in my opinion really fun, but I get why some people dont like it.
Actually, actively hunting for the robot generators is what caused me to hate Sonic CD on my initial playthrough. And the whole process wouldn’t even be so bad if the level design was actually built around the time travel mechanic and we had a radar for the generators, akin to the Master Emerald radar in the Adventure games.
@@jaredargento1511 the level design IS based around it, although it doesnt make it easy. Being able to successfully go to the past, destory the hologram shit and the robot generator requires you to memorise layouts and locations, to be creative in finidng ways to get to the past through the level design (after the first two zones anyway) and simply to be patient enough and willing to explore the zone. Of course, i completely get why people wouldnt like the change in pace the game is in general, but its still a very good game nonetheless, and what NOONE has EVER talked about is the message it gives (well, excluding the US releases). I wont spoil what i mean, but if you pay attention to things youll get what i mean. (and about the generator rader, 1) its not a 3d game so a radar wouldnt fit and hypothetically that would just make the game more tedious, but more importantly it would spoil the fun (which is why the boost mechanic in modern games is the shittest idea in human history) )
if you ask me, i think the game allows both the speedrunning AND exploration playstyles to work, but both require gamesense/experience. and on a side note, CD should but conisdered not canon (we still need a cd remake/remaster or sequal tho the potential is there)
@@yungbayntz “the boost mechanic in modern games is the shittiest idea in human history”
Well, that just incinerated all of your credibility in my eyes, because Colors and Generations are my top two favorite games in the entire franchise.
@@yungbayntz Also, if I want to play a Sonic game with the time travel mechanic, I’ll just play the fan-game, Sonic Time Twisted, which not only made the process of time traveling MUCH less tedious, but it also changed the reason for wanting to time travel and made it more worthwhile. Because really, just the good futures and the good ending in Sonic CD is nowhere NEAR a good enough reward in my book. It’s the same reason a lot of people hate getting 100% completion in Super Mario Sunshine. It’s far too much effort for far too little payoff.
I love the way this game looks and sounds, and I've even memorized most of the levels for the quickest routes to the past/ generators. But yeah, this game isn't what I'd call "well designed". I'm happy Sonic Mania is coming out because it's incorporating what I love about CD's presentation into level design that's actually good.
I love that you actually still use the song from "Radical City" like you said you would and it wasn't just a joke :D

Shinji The Cat yeah it's the easiest sonic imo
Shinji The Cat It can be, but if you try getting everything done (like getting the time stones), then it can be a challenge. But going through levels can be a breeze.
I have to disagree there, I was able to destroy all the generators without help ( not counting the one in wacky workbench where you gotta be crushed, CAUSE THAT'S TOTALLY FAIR RIGHT?!) and get the time stones just in time for the final boss. Maybe I got lucky but my first experience was a fun and easy journey
to be honest I found getting the time stones to be much easier than getting the Chaos emeralds in sonic 2.

Yeah, I had a hard time with Sonic CD, I couldn't enjoy it with the level design. Wacky Workbench and Stardust Speedway confused the hell out of me.
The level design along with the process of getting the best ending resulted in me absolutely HATING Sonic CD with a burning passion on my first playthrough. Although I have grown softer to it recently, I still think it is too aggravating for its own good.
@@jaredargento1511 i really wish there was a romhack that made the level design more like sonic 1 to 3 and less well labyrinth and focused on exploration
@@RaphielShiraha64 Yeah, with the increasing amount of people that are calling out Sonic CD for its level design, I’m quite surprised that nobody has gone to the trouble of making such a rom-hack.
@@jaredargento1511 by redesigning every level it would be basically a new game at that point but with Sonic CD controls
@@issacmunsen3663 Yeah, well I’ve always believed that this is necessary in order for me to actually like the game. Well I can tell you why I liked Sonic CD. The music being amazing helped for sure. But honestly I rather liked the levels. Unlike Sonic 2 and 3&Knuckles, Sonic CD kept more of Sonic 1's emphasis on skilled platforming and patience. It rewards you for exploring and learning the layout. If you learn the layout, you get to travel through time.
The footage you showed in Tidal Tempest where you ran back the way you came and ran into the hill just shows that you had a short attention span and didn't plan your time travel route or remember that there was a hill there despite running down it earlier.
The time travel mechanic encourages at least a second playthrough after you're more familiar with the level layouts in order to effectively time travel. It's the kind of sonic game where you have to earn your right to run at full speed, and stay on your toes while you do so. I think that contrasts to a lot of other sonic games that are just too easy full of speed section that require very little from the player.
Ashnal So You have to play again to access a essential Part of the game? That's stupid
Cosmic break think of it this way. Do you get all 7 chaos emeralds on your first run ever in a game, most would say no. Time travel is not necessary either the game gives you 2 ways to complete, so if you dont like time travel you can always get the time stones. Time travel is a reward for finding the optimal way to move for a good ending.
Skyler Brodick I'm saying you shouldn't have to play the game again to use a key part of the game.
Cosmic break like super sonic in 2,3&k, and mania?
Skyler Brodick No? Those require not getting hit and actually looking for the rings
These are hilarious! Your humor is awesome!

Keep up the good work! I honestly enjoy watching your content on a daily basis 😄
if that game is half as bad as you described it
i fully believe that sonic fans never knew what they wanted from a game.
Do you know whats even worse? If you get all the time stones A.K.A fake chaos emeralds, you don't even need to destroy those past machines stuff, it is completely optional, utterly useless.
...SO WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE POSTS?! TRY HARDING????
Well try completing those special stages on gems collection, that crap was impossible for me when I was younger. Kids nowadays with their "HD remakes," and "good controls." Then again I was so bad at the game I never knew about the super peel out, the generator machine things in each act (and in turn never knew about good futures), and had never seen past Tidal Tempest since I couldn't defeat the boss. Last time I played I basically beast mode through the game up to a certain point because at that point I knew enough about this game from CZcams videos to be able to stand a chance. And I made sure not to lay a finger on those trippy abominations of my childhood nightmares.
The sonic fans don't know what they want for ANY SONIC GAME ! I mean, there is always some people to complain about what SEGA does.
They could give them the objectively perfect sonic game a mix of everything that made every sonic game good. and they would call it shit cause "er the spindash is uh...theres ONE frame where there is a pixel just slightly out of place a-and MUH IMMERSION"
'Sonic Jims Collection'

This is probably cliche to say, but I really thought the uploader would be a girl when I saw the thumbnail.
Also, it took me way longer than it probably should have to figure out that this guy has a New Zealand accent. As an Australian, I feel uncultured. Now that I think about it, the New Zealand accent is the probably the funniest accent to have while yelling.
Caleb Jaaniste They sound exactly the same, and I have friends from both places.
Nah. They're definitely different. I can tell when someone is New Zealand nowadays because the New Zealand people living in Australia usually have even weirder accents than Australians.

I saw Sonic CD and I instantly clicked, that game is my favourite Sonic game. I mean come on, the music is incredible and no-one can deny that (I love the JP one more). The level design in some zones could have been better but I still loved it and the boss battle, more experimental than the usual boss battles.

Steven Tyler Rocks Not when the level contains a part that first-time players are very likely to loop through numerous times out of confusion, and when it is over-saturated with poor obstacle and enemy placement, like a majority of the game in general is. Listen, I’m not going to pretend that I don’t understand why people like you love this game. There’s nothing wrong with feeling that way about it. And trust me, I’ve TRIED to like this game, but I can just never bring myself to enjoy it with its overly punishing level-design.
I always thought I was missing something with CD when I played it for the first time but I went back to it last week and Collision Chaos made me realise I was just not in control. I was bounced around and hit by spikes more than I was actually doing anything else. A defense for the clunky time mechanic is you have the option to go for time stones instead but I'm never able to because I keep getting hit before I can get 50 rings because of bad spike placement.
Just not a fun time for me. Music is dope, though.
And the special stages themselves are not that good either.

I don't know where things went wrong in the script writing process (considering you said you rewrote it four times), but it didn't turn out well. Honestly, the funniest part of the video was the beginning skit. That's not good. It's like a restaurant making it's main selling point the fact that it serves food. I only tell you this because I want to see you improve. I'm actually a struggling CZcamsr myself (not saying you are too, just trying to be empathetic). I might get hate but I don't care, I love this game so much, its one of the only sonic games that I connected too at a personal level. The backgrounds are beautiful, the JP soundtrack is awesome and I found this game to be a magical experience that I have never forgotten.
You actually aren't required to get the machines or time travel. You can get the good ending by just collecting the Time Stones.
Eh, that method is not much better. The UFOs in the special stages can be a pain to destroy, even with the improved 3D in the Christian Whitehead remake, and the water taking away a significant amount of time just adds to the unreliability of the special stages. All in all, both methods of getting Sonic CD’s good ending can be very frustrating, though I do consider collecting the Time Stones the lesser of two evils.
I appreciated this game a great deal as a kid with it's emotional US music and visual atmosphere. It also helped me understand how different a place can be depending on how it develops through time. Also, it has more levels and more reward for exploration than most Sonic games. However, I agree that places you can go fast enough to time travel are very hard to find, making the game go very slow. Also, on the Christian Whitehead version, you can't save that you got a good future unless you go to the past, destroy the teleporter, and finish the stage, leading to 30 min to 1 hour required play sessions unless you use a map or memorization.
I played this game I'm completed this game and I've enjoyed this game and to this very day it's still my number one favorite Classic Sonic game

I always hated Sonic CD and never understood the praise people give to it. The level design is a confusing mess that doesn't even use Sonic's physics to his advantage.
@DarkK~
Collision Chaos Zone and Stardust Speedway Zone say hi.
PoloTech That doesn’t make them good levels.
I haven't watched you for aaaages! Man I missed these
Ima be honest... I don't like CD... at all. And I can't believe that many people say this is one of the best Sonic games, when it really is not. Its one of the worst. First off, the only way to get the good ending is to get the stones or destroy all the generators in the past. Like he said its a bitch to get to the past and once you do you gotta find the damn thing. Some of the levels are ridiculous and unfair, like Wacky Workbench, Metallic Madness act 3 and Stardust Speedway when you fight Metal Sonic. Metal Sonic is such bullshit because not only you have to beat him Eggman is chasing you with an instant death laser and if you fuck up a jump or not going fast enough or hit a spike he'll get you and kill you. One play though I did I had 12 lives and I beat it with 1 fucking life left. But the most bullshit of the entire game was the special stages. They are interesting and unique but it was the worst thing about the game. Its completely unfair and is too hard. Every time you go to hit the UFO it fucking dodges you and you miss. Not only that if you touch the water you lose a lot of your time in the stage. You'll get down to only 1 UFO and you just cannot hit it at all because every time you get near it and jump at it it'll dash to the side and you'll miss. Its one of the worst things about the game with some of the bosses. They could have made the special stages better but it was complete ass. I'm not saying CD is a complete shit game but its loved way too much and isn't as good as people say it is. Instead of 8-10/10 it should be a 4-6/10 honestly... Although there are some good things about it, there are a lot of flaws.
Kbennett 365 Or maybe, you just suck

Sega cancelled the Sonic 3 and Knuckles remaster since they thought it is good as it is (As much as we hate they are right, it is good as it is) but Taxman did have a working prototype .
I somehow doubt that. I think it has more to do with the involvement of Michael Jackson and his team of musicians in the game’s soundtrack. Don’t believe me? I wouldn't say I suck at the game when I've proven that I can beat it with all the Time Stones collected (considering how hit & miss the UFO Collision Detection in the Special Stages is...). But the general structure of CD makes it such a tedious, unfun mess if you ask me.
The structure of 2, 3 & K reward the player for mastering mechanics by allowing them to speed through without being damaged. CD will usually require that the player backtrack every so often & kill the pace (usually for Time Travel unless you find a cop out of two Springs facing each other)

Drason Vender So every hard Sonic level is bad level design? Do you expect a game to be easy and just let you win? Your statement doesn't make sense whatsoever.
I never said easy, just enjoyable, Sonic 2 and 3 levels are mostly enjoyable because while the level design is hard, it is fair and goes with the theme of the game, Sonic 1 and the last quarter of CD is bad because everything literally goes against the player for a sense of false difficulty

i gotta be the Sonic CD defense force and say that the levels are supposed to be big and expansive. it’s supposed to be a maze. you’re supposed to explore the levels. THAT’s what makes it fun (though i will admit they’re kinda bullshit at times but so was Sonic 3)
Honestly, I think all the classic games (including Mania) are bull crap at times, but I don’t think Sonic 3 is anywhere near as full of it as Sonic CD is. I played CD while exploring and traveling to the past to destroy the robot generators, and I still ended up hating the game. And you know why? Because this game has infuriating level design that was clearly not made with the time travel requirement in mind.
@@jaredargento1511 it was, though. just because every area near a sign post doesn’t allow you to time travel doesn’t mean it’s bad. you’re supposed to slow down and look for a good spot, then attempt to time travel
@@Hutch2Much Why should I have to learn the levels before I can properly utilize the game’s main gimmick in them? After all, first impressions matter. And if my first impressions of a game are bad, even if I might find enjoyment from the game upon replaying it, I usually don’t feel like giving that game another chance since the first playthrough left such a terrible taste in my mouth. The only reason I’ve replayed Sonic CD is because it has often been regarded as one of the Sonic franchise’s greatest games, and I didn’t want to be someone who feels the opposite way. But after playing it several times, I’ve come to realize that to play the game to a point where I can actually like it is not at all worth it at this point.
@@jaredargento1511 all Sonic games are like that though? you gotta replay the levels over and over before you can actually get a good time on them. and many ‘90s games are like that too. CD just does it more aggressively. and yeah, first impressions are key, but that’s what the manuals were for. the ‘90s had a buncha those
honestly, you should watch GameChamp3000’s video on it. it explains exactly what i wanna say much better than i could
@@Hutch2Much There are numerous Sonic games whose levels I’ve been able to adjust to before I even considered replaying them. The classic games (especially CD) are not among those games. To me, they are full of beginner’s traps, with CD being the worst offender, to a point where it’s the only main classic game I’ve never been able to bring myself to like. Also, you do realize that there were a lot of people back in the day who rented games, right? And therefore, those people would not have access to the manuals of whatever games they were renting, pretty much making your argument there invalid. And yeah, I know that the classic games (especially CD) are products of the time they came out in, but I can only look past that so much when it starts obstructing my enjoyment of them; and being spoiled by later games that were more fair and beginner-friendly is something I can’t help. I just don’t get used to things at the snap of a finger.
3:32 - 3:52 I was laughing so hard I couldn't breath but really it was... sexy salad that made me almost die
*FINALLY!!!*
Someone who agrees with me on this game!! I only ever beat this game once, and I never even bothered to go to the past and future. The stages are so huge and hard to traverse that even if you can get to the past, shit is too hard to navigate to find the damn machines! And yes, I would completely recommend Sonic 06 before I recommend Sonic CD. Sonic 06 is all around decent as far as stage to stage experience goes. Glitch at times, sure, at least getting from A to B is possible without getting a fucking brain aneurysm.
JMotion Are you serious?
Steven Tyler Rocks yes, he clearly is and I fully agree with his opinion.
RadicalSoda's corpse was found a mere hour later in an alley way with "Fun is infinite," written on the walls in blood.
RadicalSoda, I love you, but your opinion is wrong.
An Attemptedly Ironic Name how can an opinion be wrong?
There are no right or wrong opinions on what games are good or bad. There are only good and bad ways of expressing them. And you have presented a clear example of a bad way of expressing an opinion.

DT Scurvy Um, what?
Congrats on the subs and I felt the same way about the have when I first played it
I think you're complaining because you're bad at the game.
DuperGames 64 yeah same that's what I thought. This is a good game because it was challenging and not completely easy to breeze through.
I also think that Sonic CD has pretty cleverly designed levels.
Never spent more than 2.30 on a level.
Should I even remind anyone of shitty Metropolis and Flying Fortress level design?
Periculum Magnum what about metallic madness
DuperGames 64 I figured out the level design. It's made to punish the player for being bad at the game. It also plays with the "route" system.
DuperGames 64 not just that, but the level design is weird and frustrating. Fun, but annoying sometimes.
Near the beginning of the vid, that one game in the background was triggering my ptsd...can you please block it out?
Maybe the level design "sucks" because you're bad at the game.
DuperGames 64 that makes no sense.
DuperGames 64 what?
DuperGames 64 that makes no sense. Just because you can do well in shit level design doesn't mean the level design is good.
Wacky Workbench. Literally thats the only stage with shitty level design. Everything else was either meh like The 3rd Zone (forgot the name) or amazing like Stardust Speedway.
No the level design just sucks
you forgot to add "magical milk", "really radical soda" and "memorable marshmallows" to your shopping list.
NEW RADICALSODA VIDEO BOYS ITS LIKE CHRISTMAS
"The show where the guy in the video is just as sexy as the guy on the thumbnails."
in 2020, with the thumbnails Rad comes up with NOW...
...I gotta agree with him on that.
As someone who's earliest Sonic experiences include treasure hunting around a city as Knuckles I have to say I find CD weirdly fascinating. It is indeed a game you have to play multiple times to really get a feel for, but the machine hunting makes it a real prelude to Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Sonic Heroes' Team Chaotix and Shadow the Hedgehog. To anyone who says they aren't like classic Sonic, I can always fall back on good ol' CD.
Soinc:cool! are we playing chess?
Wacky Workbench: BOOP
Sonic:OK! We're NOT playing playing chess!
'where is the Sonic 3 remaster?' christian whitehead is working on sonic mania, so it's gona come after sonic mania, if it will ever come out at all
also Sonic CD uses Sonic 1 sprites for Sonic
After seeing Mania, I didn't care anymore, even though S3&k is my favorite game of all time (I'm hoping Mania will beat that). Modders are probably going to remake the Classic Saga for Mania as mods, just like they did with the Unleashed Project for Generations.
Sadly, I don’t think it’s that simple. It’s probably more because of Michael Jackson and his team of musicians being involved with the game’s soundtrack. Don’t believe me? Then answer this: If it’s not the music, then why else has Sonic 3 & Knuckles not seen ANY official re-release for most of the 2010s?
Sonic CD was the first Sonic game I ever completed, and it singlehandedly got me into the series.
And that was less than two years ago, with the 2011 version.
So in case you were wondering, it has nothing to do with nostalgia.
How do you use the figure 8 dash on the PS3 version?
Same as any other version: just hold up on the d-pad while repeatedly pressing the jump button.
I like it for some of its bosses, some sections, the history, it’s Easter eggs, and it’s music. But I can understand where your coming from. WACKY WORKBENCH
Not many people will read this, but I hope to play Sonic CD with instantanious time travel. It was originally intended to be very fast, but due to technical limitations, the transition scene was added, just to let console load the new level.
And zoom out a bit, I want to see more ahead.
This is my favorite Classic Sonic game (I haven't played Sonic 3 or Knuckles so that might change my mind).
What’s the music playing in the background at 6:07?
Metallic madness good future jp.
Yhenestik THANK YOU!
it's true, we praised the game way too much because it was something spectcular at the time with it's graphics, soundtrack and stuff
but yeah, I don't remember it beeing that good when it comes to gameplay
it's just easy now cause I'm used to it
Yeah, pretty much.
