- A modern residence set in the suburbs of Calicut, Kerala for a nuclear family of 4 in a narrow plot of 5 cents with a width of just 10 metres. The narrowness of the plot meant that the visible area of the facade will be below 10metres and hence we felt that an element needs to be introduced to provide a unique character to the house. The Checkered screens are what gives that character to this house by providing an interesting exterior and at the same time acts as a good shading device and will play with light to create interesting shadow patterns in the interior. The priority was hence on the interiors and making the most out of the minimal footprint .The residence is small on paper with a square footage of around 1800 Sq.ft but feels big with its double height spaces and well lit interiors. Raw and rustic interiors coupled with the greens gives the interiors that tropical feel.
The double height common areas, ie, the two living areas and the dining areas gives the house that huge spacious feel right when you enter the house. The play with volumes is crucial here in creating that sense of spaciousness in an otherwise small footprint area-wise.
The 4 bedrooms are tucked to the corner with two bedrooms on the first floor stacked on top of two bedrooms in the ground floor. The 4th bedroom in the first floor is also a flexible home theatre space with an attached balcony. A study space/ home workstation has also been carefully tucked in the first-floor passage in another example of how space utilisation has been taken to it's limit in this house.

Well defined and a beautiful design
Beautiful house with plenty of natural light and good air flow.
Loved the rustic dining table displaying all the knots and whorls which can be seen in the cross section of a tree trunk.
Also, I wish Moroccan zillij tiles or Spanish Azulejo tiles , (to be found in Goa )/or Mexican tiles were used for the risers and the kitchen walls. They would have looked stunning as design accents.

It'll be a real pain to clean those large glass walls. Also won't there be a green house effect inside the house with all that glass?
Nice house, the floor height maybe a bit high, Kozhikode is on the coast, most doors look similar, that could have been avoided.
