1. First he talked about stories, like Mahesh is a small story of revenge and pride, Thondimuthalum is a small story about a thief and a theft attempt . etc so He is saying that there are stories around the world and even similar stories but what is important in a screenplay is Perspective . Like he said his perspective will not be as of M T Vasudevan Nair's or other peoples view. everything about it (characters, landscape, etc )will be different. So he said that we need more and more experience about things, people etc . The basic thing to write a screenplay is to develop a good perspective.
2 .He said that the basic thing is to have visual writing. Use conversations and other talks if we can't convince it through visuals. It is a method followed by all great writers but also don't underestimate dialogues . ( but he means not to spoon feed things by dialogues). He told an example of a visual story . like a happy kid he said like one day before he went to a fish market and saw one kid sitting behind his father on a bike and holding a new cricket bat so warmly in his chest . so that's his example of a happy kid's visual image like a kid will be happy if we get a ice cream also but the level of depth will be different if we got a bat which will be in his hand for months and years
He told another example of visual storytelling . In the movie Thondimuthalum there is a scene where prasad(not fahad) got a tea from his sister and after it he went out of that bedroom . The next scene is his sister making the bed and starts to Iron her clothes in that bed itself . Syam says that with that scene we can obviously understand that they are not rich and don't have a big house and have no other space to do ironing etc . so with that scene the movie doesn't want any other explanations or dialogues to show the poverty or less space of Prasad's house.
3 Do you write a script scene by scene?
He did not answer directly but like I told mahesh is a story born when 2 guys fought in his village and the photographer thing added when he saw a photographer during Idukki Gold(2013) shooting time.
4. Character arc is an important thing. we must write about a character carefully if the change of that character is not convinced that character will be wasted.
Ex: Bobby in kumbalangi.
5. Story world is as important as the story itself . like we should have a clear idea of the world (place & culture) the story taking place. He took out an example from Lucifer malayalam movie. He said it's a super commercial film. The incident is Chief minister is dead. Usually in kerala there will be no ceremony like beach funeral like in tamilnadu etc. But in the film lucifer director and writer take that thing of beach funeral brilliantly so it made some impact in that movie. Like the lucifer movie talks about illuminati and all so that hugeness must be in that film . If it's a normal movie the CM 's funeral will not be that big as in Lucifer.
Reduce cliches, like in Mahesh village there is no talk in barber shop or tea ship which is widely used in village movies in malayalam.
6. Dialogues in movies . Dialogues are according to the character ! we can't make two characters say dialogue in the same tone and action ! for example if we are in a classroom and your friend needs a Pen ! some will ask for a pen and someone will simply grab it from you !
so basically dialogues are the important thing which show a person's character to viewers ! so make it accordingly ! think of the incident and imagine the usual conversation which can be done in that situation ! and if needed add some cinematic element to it ! no need to be fully realistic
