There is something very satisfying watching a skilled artisan, who takes a pride in his work, doing what he has learned over years of acquiring his ‘art’. The fact that he does not damage what he is trying to create in the process, is no accident. Avoiding clumsy moves or misplaced steps is as important as careful measurement and preparation. Complicated and compound angles require agile mathematics, particularly when accommodating the inevitable variation of build. The older the age of the original building, the more likely it’s not going to be symmetrical. Thanks Wills for showing you and your team in action. It’s a nice job that looks superb.
That video was a masterpiece! Hugely entertaining and wonderful to see the process from roofer's nightmare to a beautifully finished slate roof. I loved your positive, friendly attitude and great teaching skills. I came to the video to find out how to safely move, walk, stand and sit on my slate roof so I can drop a chimney liner down for a woodburner. I was carefully watching to see how you positioned your self working on the roof without damaging tiles but ended up learning a lot more about roof construction and renovation. Many thanks for making and sharing the video, Will. You are the King of the roofers!
Love your vids mate, one thing you messed up that slating. Almost bond on bond at the top of the vally. Crazy because everything else is spot on. Why didnt you work it out ?
@@davidyip5557Aye, I see that at 13:39 mins, a full width instead of 2 narrow ones would have fettled that. Well spotted, but an absolutely awesome job overall one must say (and I think NHL5 lime should have been used on the stone copings too, incidentally, but not knocking the job overall).
After doing a full back to brick house renovation over the past 2 years, I would consider myself a very experienced DIY’er. Now at the point where the roof needs doing, and your video’s have given me the knowledge and confidence to give it a go myself. Thank you for these top quality videos, keep it up! Subscribed and definitely going to be a regular watcher 👍🏼
I have done roofing for 35 years here in Texas. From wood shakes rough and 18" perfections, clay tile cement tile, but never no slate. I'am retired now but watching your videos brings back some good memories of my roofing days, good job especially on the flashing work.
Anyone watching this whose roof needs work will absolutely be wanting these guys to come and do it. If you have never seen such things, you will see exactly what makes an excellent job. Will will go far....
Didn’t do an excellent job he got the bond wrong he should of struck the roof out a proper slater would never slate a roof with out striking it off first
It is a shame when you don't get the service you'd expect from a professional trade. Will is an awesome guy and an exceptional tradesman, and wouldn't leave anything but perfection. All the best, John 👷🏻♂️
Loved it. I watch a lot of construction videos that tell you how to do a job, step by step. I’m never going to re-slate a roof myself so sometimes I just want to know what is involved so should I ever need a roofer to do it for me, I know what’s to expect. I wish more videos took this approach. Excellent thank you..
Amazing work. I have just been ripped off with cowboys leaving a dreadful, almost laughable mess. I just wish Will and his guys did roofing in my area. Excellent video very detailed cheers
I've been roofing for 2 years now and you my friend know your business, i'd love to work for/with someone as clued-up as yourself, i bet you are very proud of the work you and your gang do cos you are perfectionists the best at what you do in my opinion.
I can't afford a new roof but need a valley releading. I said to my mate who is gonna do it, can you not put felt underneath the lead? he said yes. I questioned it tho my self as there is obviously a reason why they don't in the first place. This video confirms it for me as it will sweat 👍
Just started a job with foam sprayed on the slate nightmare is an understatement 😂😂 I had no choice but to smash them all the foam was wrapped around the batten and everything feel your pain. 70 bin bags of foam.
Another quality job from true professionals. Your attention to every detail is second to none. You should have some very happy customers. Hope they appreciate the top job. Thanks for filming it all too. 👍👍. All the best Pete
Epic video. Thanks. My dad was a roofer and I spent many happy times helping him out as a kid growing up in the 70s. Thanks for the memories Will, there is so much more to this trade than people realise. Stay safe.
Im a sparky & am just about to start solar installs for 2023. I was looking for some vids on working with slate, cutting solar brackets in & found this, Just watched whole vid, your a credit to your game Will, shame you dont live in Maidstone!
These geezers are spot on & a do a marvelous 1st class job with real pride in their work. A friend & I are planning on doing my roof, but re-slate using the good original removed ones, plus remainder using good second hand ones. Cannot stand the sight of those horrible cheap clay pan tile things, pile of crap!. So hats off to these guys for giving us some inspiration to tackle these jobs. Noticed they used a slaters hammer, but I've bought a slate ripper tool for getting the slates off. Not sure if I've got the right tool for the job now after having watched this. Loved the video, cheers :-) .
Will the Roofer I've seen a lot of roofs stripped and re slatted - But never to your Quality- and your enthusiasm is a real credit to you- take care and do many more.
Excellent job. The only problem I see is to the right at the top of the valley at 15:01, the seams almost meet up. I'm unfamiliar with slate work so I wouldn't know how to fix that without vertically chalking the right side of the dormer using the slated left side as a template. But I really admire the hard work put into this job.
You're right about the side lap, there's probably a piece of lead underneath. Marking perpendicular lines on the roof battens can help avoid this. I feel picky mentioning it - I've learnt a lot of tips from Will, and don't give my time for free to assist/educate others. He's clearly an excellent roofer.
Can I say just started watching you guys and your work is first class I can tell 100 percent you take pride in your work take note apprentices this is how it’s done
Amazing job.. Such attention to detail in a place where so few get to appreciate it. I'm glad we get to watch the process here. 'If the film crew would like to drop me a beat'... 😂 Legend 😊👌
Great video! Wish I'd got into roofing when I was younger. A few things confused me, so I have a couple of questions... 1) I always thought the roof felt had to have a slight dip in between the rafters so any rain that got though a broken slate would pool into that dip and run all the way to the bottom...otherwise it could run/spread any which way on the way down including over where the new rafters are nailed through the felt, compromising the watertightness...is that not really necessary? 2) Why is the wood you installed blue? Waterproofing treatment or something? 3) Why did you install cut slates on the vertical behind the lead step flashing? Thanks for taking the time to film this job.
enjoy your videos. wondering why you took off the roof boards and replaced with membrane only, dosent the roof boards give more protection and insulation, couldnt thay have gone under the membrane?
Great work 💪 nice to see a worker who enjoys their work and takes such pride in execution of task. some people could learn a thing or two from this guy !
Great videos! Does anyone have a recommendation for the best underlay for slate? I'm struggling to find reviews as most membrane companies demonstrate using their product with battens (the English way) therefore allowing for an air gap between membrane and tile/slate, they seem to suggest this is important, so whats the recommended membrane designed to be sandwiched between sarking?
If it is traditional slate then over fascia vents, breathable membrane and dry ridge system is fine but you need to cut out 30mm of the membrane either side of the ridge tree, if man made then you need counter battens or a non breather felt, hope this is useful, please see the Marley roof site for more x
I love the way how you working mate , your one of the best roofer I have seen 💪💪 👍 i like how you explain all the details , Well done pal , I'm builder to am doing all sorts of building jobs, watching you every video ,, I'm learning more and more thanks to you . Well done my mate 👍.

So impressed with professionalism and a site clean up. Had the services of a roofer who didn't have these qualities: so stressful!
It is a shame when you don't get the service you'd expect from a professional trade. Will is an awesome guy and an exceptional tradesman, and wouldn't leave anything but perfection.
All the best, John 👷🏻♂️
Great example of a complex job done to perfection. No obstacle is too great for Will and his team!

I’ve been fitting a grp valley on a slate roof probably one of the hardest things I’ve done doing all the cuts you make it look so easy 😭
Nice to watch a roofer who knows what he's doing.

Very nice Job there Will looks like you take pride in your work.
Half a slate cut up at top of valley. Nice camera work to hide it. Bond on bond with cuts to ridge. Why not set it out from gutter? Easy peasy.

These guys do not mess about!!! master class again!!! 👍🏾
Thanks Kasper 👍
Hello Will
Was wondering why you cross battened the roof?
So he has a raised edge to dress the lead valley on to , also the slates will then over sail in to the valley.
excellent practical information
the basics well appointed
Absolutely stunning work fella! your videos are mint!!
Great work 💪 nice to see a worker who enjoys their work and takes such pride in execution of task. some people could learn a thing or two from this guy !
Thanks Darrell 👍
Very good, professional work!
Absolute class from Will and the boys again. Top notch.
What a talented team you are brilliant 👍👍👍👍
Top notch ,great workmanship!
The roofing videos are my favorite. Much better than watching you digging a hole in the ground

Hi Christian much appreciated all the best Tony 😂
Brilliant to watch this craftsmanship
Thanks for watching 👍
Super job, top workmanship. I am interested to know why the focus on using second hand slates with an unknown remaining lifespan versus new slates?
yeah boys proper bang on. close mitred hips, graded your slates so all sit flat, bang on flashings, bonds bang on.
proper nice job boys
Thanks dude! 👍
