Dormers just for looks. What is your take on that?

I want to add-on a roof extension to my front porch. I want to come out approximately 10 feet from the exterior wall. Will a knee wall be okay to use for supporting the wall where it sits atop the existing wall? Or do I need to tear open the exterior wall and add vertical supports? What is your take?

Why not, if it adds character and charm to the house it's worth it.

Great job I am a retired GC for 40 years in residential construction I like you also worked alone many more times than I should have. It is refreshing to see that there are still craftsman with pride in their work out there. I bulk cut on most jobs I would prebuild all my door and window frames the just set them in the walls when framing it worked for me, keep the videos coming I miss building so very much loved my job. This is a pleasant walk down memory lane. God bless stay safe.

Dormers just for looks are ok. As far as framing, way less work. But dormers that function bring in SO much natural light. They look great!

Yes I prefer functional dormers if there is a true upstairs living. These are just for curb appeal. The wife wanted them 😁

    Josh,

    I have a 5-12 pitch approx 60' long.
I want to add dummy dormers.
My question is this; how many would you put and what size?
    Width height and pitch?
Thanks for any help and great videos I have learned alot.

Well it’s all subjective really. My roof is 7/12 and 70’ long that you seen in my videos and I’m doing 3 dormers that are 40” wide and 58” tall in the center. A lot goes into figuring the exact position and dimensions. Would have to see in person to determine. Thanks a lot for watching!

So is there just empty space inside the dummy dormers? I wouldn't do that on my own house--just more work, building them up front and then re-roofing in the future. But maybe an enterprising person could put birdhouses or something inside? Which might be kind of cool.
