    Good Bless you guys. Thank you for posting this. This is just what I need to take on building two gable dormers on the front of our house. I built two large shed dormers on the back bedroom one on each side, but gables are in a league of their own. This gave me the confidence to tackle this in the spring. Thanks again. I belive i have watched all your you tube videos. Love the roofing videos.

    Rafters always mess me up, because I don't do them often enough for it to be second nature. I always have to try a few times before I get it right (and ruin a few boards). I've looked up many videos explaining it, but none have explained it as well as this one for me. Most videos just tell you what to do, not why you do it. Matt explained each step and why. Awesome video.

    1:10:38 Lots of opportunity for wind driven rain to to cause a leak there if not done correctly.
    "keep the sub facia 3/4 inch off the decking for the shingles to slide in"
    I had to do that on my own roof recently, where the "fly rafter" of the main gable meets a smaller gable of an addition. I cut the fly rafter short, so that shingles for the lower gable could be put under the end of it.

      The rain falling from roof to roof in the same spot all the time will wear the shingles in those spots faster than the rest of the roof and eventually it could become very noticeable. The downspout elbows placed just above the lower roof absorbs that force.

I say no way to reuse step shingles. I think ice and water needs to go up the wall everytime. Any roofing job with rip off shingles and not taking off siding is a failure in progress. Prove me wrong. I think this should be illegal for roofers to do to customers. Loved your window j channel video. Your mind thinks how to shorten the job. I'm similar

    so...how do I take a 6 wide by 8 deep porch with a gable roof and turn it into an 8" deep x 50" long porch that has a lean to roof but tie it into the origonal small gable roof? it's on a ranch style home, but I dont want to tear down any existing structure! HELP!!!!

      @NWIVeteranConstruction  Před 3 lety

      It sounds really doable. Prolly pour footers and/ or concrete and the use that for the columns to support obviously. Get some headers and cut rafters to whatever pitch you want the lean to at. ( prolly easier if your existing roof is a bit steep. Like a 7/12 or so. And then your rafters would just terminate into the existing reverse gable. At least that's what I think...lol prolly ask Matt though haha

    He called in Matt to build the dormer because he has things to do.
    He then records Matt building dormer

    I have question about this job you did
    do you need a permit if I want to do something like that on my house?

    • @NWIVeteranConstruction
      @NWIVeteranConstruction  Před 3 lety

      I'm willing to bet yes. Depends on the area. But I would say most places would want you pull a permit when adding framing or changing existing. Might want to Call your Town building department to be sure

    u all are sooooo lucky not having damn harness and ropes on all the time, hahaha i mean i do work for a bigger company of like 30 roofers in oregon, so i get it and i bet u all have to do that on certain roofs just to be safe but even on 4/12s sometimes we have to have harness and ropes, for sure harness, of course some guys have their harness and bags connected together, some have their bags separate from harness, but it gets alil annoying having to use all that on some roofs were im like i dont need this on right now, but it is what it is, rules are rules, i notice the guys are nailing alil faster then they use to, thats good, i did notice a few times tho it seemed like they were trying to place the shingle and line it up to perfectly spending alil to much time doing that, all in all looks good,
    sometimes i wish i worked for a small company alil more chill and relaxed, not saying u guys are all fun and games, just seems alil more chill, at least from what i see on flim, ok enough blabbing lol.. good shit man

    I always thought it'd be nice to be able to just prefab a dormer bring it in on a truck with a little bit of a crane and just boom put the sucker on nail it down cut out your roof and put in your toilets and windows and toilet paper holders Etc xcetera xcetera

      It’s the way it works here in the Netherlands.
      Even new construction they just hoist ‘em prefab onto the roof.

    Its a nice work but the wood won't last long should be used pressure treated board .

    • @manifestmetalroofing
      @manifestmetalroofing Před rokem

      That’s like asking for sauce with your steak ! Water will never come in contact with the wood if it’s built properly. Plus treated wood will cause aluminum to corrode

      Because you’re not kicking the water onto the next course of shingles instead the water stays under the shingles, the rest of the way down
