  • Many of you know the basics of EMP's where your electronic devices will be wiped out and you will be back in the 1800's. But actually if you understand the technical details of an EMP, you might be surprised to find out that some devices will survive. This will make sense when you understand things like the frequencies of the pulse and the resonance of devices. Plus there are ways to be a prepper and be ready for this with as little as $100.

      Agreed, Putin is too level headed...thankfully given how DC keeps goading Russia. However a simple fission device can be used which means a rogue country like North Korea could employ a HEMP attack, which is probably the greater concern. On the other hand a Carrington level CME is virtually a certainty at some point. In fact earth missed being hit by such an event by just a couple of days back in 2012, if I recall correctly. And there is no reason a solar CME couldn't be even more powerful than the Carrington event.

    Basically, if the power grid goes down; we're dead. Unless the damage to the power grid was minor and temporary, even the machinery needed to make the necessary repairs, would not operate for long without fuel. We would be finished as a human race. Our cities would produce mobs of people, roaming the countryside, pilfering and destroying any food, water and fuel supplies we might have on hand. We wouldn't even have the ability to protect ourselves and property without manufactured ammunition supplies. Any electronic device that might survive an initial EMP blast would be the least of my concerns.

    The main issue is not much of electronics getting fried(eventhough its rea!), its more of electric grid going down, and the limited availability of the large transformers used for transmission, making it for a prolonged outage for several weeks, if not for months. The issue is the ensuing chaos due to network and internet outage, lack of water supply etc. High quality whole house nanosecond TVS might improve survivability.

    • @atomicsmith
      @atomicsmith Před 12 dny +3

      Supply chain for new transformers is already months. Grid providers usually stock a few for the occasional outage. Even a fairly localized event could take out thousands of transformers. That area would be mostly without grid for at least a couple of years. The secondary effects would probably be worse than just the loss of power. The worst case is probably a mega CME taking out a hemisphere. The secondary effects from that are almost unimaginable.

    I was on the electronic workbench at work where we had a monitor on the grid with a line voltage monitor. It was mostly on 60 Hz at about 120 VAC. We had a 4.3 earthquake and the monitor burned up in front of my eyes in a second, after moving the needle to the right fullscale. Way over 200 VAC. The needle had paint on it that burned up. The unit itself had a coil that smoked up and shorted. I ran out of the building, a few minutes returning. That was the only piece of equipment that was damaged at the bench. Out in the field, that was another story and 4 people worked for about a month doing repairs.

  • @guytech7310
    @guytech7310 Před 9 dny +3

    Some mistakes.
    AN NEMP is unlikely to cross open breakers as the pulse is very short, lasting 10s of nanoseconds, in circuits because of inductance & capacitance 10s of microseconds. What happens is that the EMP will induce a current inside all of the buildings wiring. Basically wiring acts alike an antenna collecting the EMP energy. The more surface area (longer wire) the more energy will be collected. Another issue is that EMP will increase the ground state voltage of the earth, which means a grounded wire connected to a device can travel up from the ground & into the electrical device
    I believe the Russian NEMP devices are capable of inducing up to 200KV per square meter, which is far higher than 50KV.
    As far as RF devices, it does not matter the RF frequency of the device. Radios use a tank circuit (inductor & cap) as a band pass filter to block out frequencies not needed. The antenna will still collect all RF energy some more, some less depending on the antenna length. The issue is going to RF pre-amp which is designed to boost picowatt signals into the receiver, which cannot tolerate the power the antenna will collect regardless of the devices frequency. Consider that antennas will be resonant to multifrequencies. Most antennas are a fraction of the wavelength (ie 1/2 Wavelength, 1/4, 1/8. 1/16, etc). Another words, your cell phone is going to get fried. The only way to protect RF devices is have them in a faraday cage. This includes AM\FM radios, Wifi, cell\smart phones, etc. That said the cell towers are also going to get fried & also lose power, so even if your cell phone isn't fried, its still useless.
    Solar panels will also get fried, as the all have a reverse blocking Diode will will fail. Solar panels have a lot of wiring as the individual cells are all connnected. Solar cells are just Diodes that collect light to create current. That can be damaged by an EMP especially considering they have a lot of surface area & are typically wired in series to produce a higher voltage than each cell can produce on its own.
    To protect devices using alum foil you have to insulate it from the foil. For instance put the device in a plastic bag, and then wrap it with foil. A cardboard box wrapped in Alum foil will also work. Note the entire surfaces of the box must be completely covered and the must also be in contact on all sides.

Destroying as well the financial system so you can reset it all based on CBDCs that work off line and personal carbon emissions? Wouldn't everybody who survive accept the only solution to the chaos ? Wouldn't it be credible if it happens during a solar maximum? Let's say.....2025?

    The experts have always said that a nuclear EMP from a bomb exploded at the right height above the center of the US will absolutely fry all electrical and electronic devices, unless they are stored in a Faraday cage. There are some problems even with that. Suppose you save a cellphone or portable radio. The cell system and all the radio stations will be destroyed as well, so the phones and radios will be useless, unless you have a shortwave radio and other people have one too. Computers would be useless to most people, as the internet would be dead. On the other hand, mine will be useful to me because I have thousands of books and entire websites stored on my hard drives, and I have enough solar panels to power a laptop, a hard drive, and a printer, so I would still have a ton of research material available. Plus, I already have hard copies of the most important references. I also have a stereo system, so I could still play my records, tapes, and CDs. But so many people today get all their media through the internet. They will be SOL if there is an EMP. The E1 pulse is the one that will kill devices that aren't even plugged in. Nuclear EMP puts out E1, E2, and E3. A solar EMP only has the E3 burst. Mr. Braxman seems to believe that we won't get a strong enough E1 to kill portable devices. Experts say that the portable devices will be killed. I'm surprised that Mr. Braxman hasn't already stored his electronics in a Faraday cage of some sort. I use multiple layers of plastic and aluminum foil.
    In short, I don't believe he's done much research on this problem. I've been researching it for over 25 years and have a lot of information printed out in hard copy so it won't disappear. I have seen demonstrations showing components in radios that have been fried by EMP. Some cars will die from EMP, but some of those will restart.

      You are correct. The only positive thing that I can say about your comments is that it would be tit for tat. Mutually assured destruction. That is what keeps potential opponents from utilizing these technologies on other countries. The US Government Incorporated has used EMPs abroad, so they know what the outcome will be. Humans can live without electricity and modern electronic devices. That is not the problem. It is the lag time that it would require for humans to adapt to the 1800s lifestyle that would kill millions.

For the last 7 years, we have worked to become totally self-sufficient with solar, watermaker, and even replaced our diesel engine with electric when it died. At present, we live as though we were in an apartment, with sufficient LiFePo4 storage for indefinite periods of time. Should an SHTF scenario occur, we will not bug out, as we are home. That being said, we have prepared for a poasible EMP with a solar oven and a portable gas generator. Like you, I am a licensed Ham operator and use my station regularly and consider this equipment to be vital for communications. I use a 20 meter Hamstick with 15ft of RG316 coax. Other than disconnecting the coax, what would your recommendation be for protecting this gear at sea and in use? Great video.

      No grid and no coming back. No more communication, no more financial system, no more transport, no more trade, no more industry, no more medicine. And no coming back. Due to the intertwined nature of global supply chains, such an event in US, Asia or Europe would mean the end of civilization. As much as I like the sailboat idea, I'd say it would be only a delay. Eventually you would need to come close to shore for shelter against storms/hurricanes, or even land to gather supplies, fix the boat, etc. Pirates and starving thieves wold be waiting for you. I don't think anyone would survive such an event except perhaps some small tribe-like gatherings reverting back to the stone age. Really, I wouldn't worry about it.

      @@EdBender , you put a lot of thought into your reply. We are both over 60. The boat is stocked with essential medical supplies and antibiotics. We have havens to go to for storms and hurricanes where there is nothing and no one. We have tested this lifestyle for the last six years. Five hurricanes, so far. Can't count the number of storms. The difficult part will be forecasting and tracking but that is where communications shine. We have plenty to offer pirates and it isn't food or rum. You are right about it being a delay. All systems degrade, over time, on a boat and on land. I never suggested it was a panacea, only a plan and that's more than most have.

    4:00 Well I just did some research on how to protect my PV system, and it turns out there are so called surge protection devices, which are made to clamp a short pulse above it's rated voltage.
    There are 3 types apparently, type 1 is heavy duty that offers some protection even against direct lightning hit. Type 2 is somewhat weaker, which supposed to protect against short duration pulses due to induction, and is becoming increasingly common even mandated in some areas even in residential areas. Type 3 is the weakest, but lowest voltage which meant to clamp the already clamped surge and thus protect sensitive appliances in which it is installed. High quality switch mode power supplies often already have type 3 protection devices already built in.
    I just purchased a set of Type 2 for my apartment last week, to protect my AC unit and my inverter against short surges until I have some money to install a more serious type 1 device. The Type 2 device I have is rated to clamp surges above 275V (we have 230VAC in EU, so 275V device is appropriate) up to 40kA (that is a short pulse of up to 40,000 Amps)
    So I suspect the effect of an EMP may prove to be overrated in some areas, and cause far less damage then expected due to the abundance of surge protection in some region, while in poorer region and where it's not mandated it may be devastating.

    In the USA the long distance electricity transmission system operates at between 250 and 750 kV. A mere (nominal) 50kV from an EMP won't notice, because the isolation barriers are easily strong enough to protect against such surges. You have to think though that power stations are going to be a significant target. If you survive, your phone and your microwave oven will still work. There just won't be any power, that's all.

    This is never going to happen as a weapon over large areas, the environment is too big and will soak up most of the energy:
    1. Impossible to concentrate that much power over all bands across huge areas.
    2. The solar flare of 1859 could have been fake reporting to make up for lack or service when their phone lines failed and or caused fires which might have been another way of getting out of trouble, by blaming it on the sun. No proof!
    It can be made as a directed weapon, concentrating the burst at a smaller area but to cover all wavelengths at once is still almost impossible. A laser weapon is an example of a wavelength burst that can destroy but look at radio stations that use 1,000,000 Watts. They don't damage a thing. Now can you make a laser weapon at lower wavelengths? No because you couldn't fit a long wavelength transmitter into a small enough device, let alone a broadband transmitter and antenna. This is what makes laser weapons and directed audio possible, they are higher frequencies or directed devices making them either small enough to fit in a portable device or to direct painful sound waves over a small concentrated distance. Another example of this is directed microwave technology which actually starts to heat people up but, similar to directed audio weapons it can only be used in a concentrated area.
    The only thing that could happen is a high voltage spike over the power grid, this can damage electronic devices that are plugged in, if the grid doesn't throw it's breakers in time. But it's very unlikely that it will damage devices running from batteries alone. Solar grid tie inverters may be damaged but it's almost impossible that a solar charging and battery inverter system will be damaged if it's off grid gear.
