Bollywood's Role in India's Heated Political Environment | The Quint's Films & Politics Roundtable

  • #SwaraBhasker, #VarunGrover, Anubhav Sinha, Renuka Shahane, and Neeraj Ghaywan join us for a discussion on Bollywood's role in contemporary Indian politics - in the times of Modi, CAA and NRC.
    Do film industry professionals have a responsibility to speak up when the country is in political turmoil, or is that an unfair expectation to burden them with?
    Is there pressure on #Bollywood celebrities to not criticise the ruling establishment, and do they fear the consequences of a possible backlash?
    And are some of India's biggest superstars failing the people through their silence?
    Join the discussion in the comments below.

    My problem is not that Bollywood doesn't speak. The issues lies in the fact that they use patriotism and nationalism to sell their movies but when the country is in trouble, they stay mum.

    • @nishantdesai3705
      @nishantdesai3705 Před 4 lety +28

      as much as I agree with you the problem is that these huge stars can take a hit from a film but someone else from the same production crew might not be able to do that. If SRK makes a statement it's not like that only he loses money, all of the employees from makeup artist to spot boy, etc will take a hit from it and those people might suffer because of it
      The problem is that we Indians don't keep actor/actresses in a movie separate from the person itself, if we don't like even a single statement made by a star people will boycott his/her movie, it's sad but I can understand why big movie stars might get afraid a bit before taking any stand.

      @@nishantdesai3705 I get that and I have made a comment in this regard too. I get the Khans trying to stay away from controversies based on past experience but the fact that Aamir and SRK posed with Modi is despicable. I mean, you see the double speak, no? There are prescribed killing of Jews, Christians and polytheists in the book and several auxiliary hadiths, beheading of people different than them and then somehow this is not equateable to Nazism at all. In fact, you guys are the actual Nazis, before the Nazis even existed! 🤣
      Entire civilizations wiped away - Christians from Syria, Egypt, Lebanon. Zoroastrians from Iran. Hindus from Indonesia and Malaysia. Buddhists and Sikh from Afghanistan. And others are Nazis? Hmm.

    As a Pakistani and an outsider in this argument. I feel if the Muslims in India wanted to come to Pakistan they would’ve done so a long time ago but it was their love for their homeland that made them stay. They believed in the brotherhood in India that people could live in that nation without racial or religious prejudice so they stayed and stood by their country. And I feel really heartbroken to see their own countrymen turn against them just because of some baseless propaganda.

      No one has turned against them, the policy really doesn't affect them at all. The current so called student protests have only been conducted by universities who are affiliated with the opposition government. They don't even constitute 0.1% of the Indian student population. The media coverage and ofcourse the celebrities on this table who are also supporters of the opposition have exaggerated it to such epic proportions, it sounds like there is a civil war happening in India. There are no extraordinary circumstances the way it is being projected.

It has left me aghast at the fact that they continue to support such elements of society. Rest all has already been said and done about this left brigade and their sad state of affairs that I don't wish to elaborate on and waste my time further.
    Secondly, for a those who'll come at me saying that I'm a blind bhakt. To them I say, IF me defending the government is andh-bhakti, then so is your opposing andha-virodh. Which makes you no different from me then therefore you'll be showing duality and hypocrisy in your very own line of thoughts. You have a valid point, fine, we'll discuss, but no stupidity.
    Lastly, I'm not surprised this is coming from Quint, I expect them to be biased, they're no different from the 'godi media' they often try to dismantle. Both of them are biased, both are stupid, both are dangerous to this society for propelling masses towards an uncertain future. Period.

    This is how you discuss. I understand that most of them are like minded and have similar point of view when it comes to CAA, NRC and similar political point of view, but the beauty in this whole conversation is by the fact that they are letting each other complete what they have to say and also bring respectful to each other.

    What a treat to listen to enlightened & educated people in real sense who fight for a generous cause of humanity in general. Varun is right when he said one should read Dr Ambedkar's Annihilation Of Castes & then come up with point of existence or nonexistence of discrimination on the basis of castes in film industry or anywhere else.
