    A lot of people just want a camera, other than their smartphone, to shoot vacations, events, family, with a few closeups and some nature. Nothing complex. For them, an inexpensive camera is exactly what they need. Many don’t even know what RAW is. If they decide they enjoy it enough to go to something better, they can, as it’s the same mount. It’s tough trying to review this from a serious photographer’s viewpoint, as that’s not who is going to buy this.

    The production on these two episodes were great. It's interesting to see Canon expanding on their bodies to the extent of how many DLSR bodies they had. I'm looking forward to the APS-C lenses above all. It was great to hear that @Chris Niccolls wanted to share images that highlighted not just these consumer level cameras, but also the consumer level lenses currently available. Curious to know your lens set up for these particular videos, @Jordan Drake, especially the shot at 7:05 since the character of it is really brought out by your composition.

    I have the R, R6, and the R7, and all have their use and strengths. The low weight and small form factor of the R50 I find very attractive, for travel that is. Had the M50 before and absolutely loved it, especially in combination with the Sigma 56mm. The lack of control dials is an issue, I admit. You can outsource one to the lens, but a second dial on body is kind of a must. Thanks for the review. As always honest and straight up.

      Hang around any camera forum, and you will see tons of people who were arguing that the fact that Canon hasn't released a new M lens since 2018 didn't mean the M platform was dead. Go to a forum right now, and you will find plenty of people arguing that the R50 doesn't meant the M platform is dead.

    • @thetoyota86perspective54
      @thetoyota86perspective54 Před rokem +1

      @Gemma Seymour there is still nothing like the M50. Light, has a viewfinder and the EF-M lenses are exactly what mirrorless should be: sharp, light, look good and those primes are quality.
      I bought two M50 bodies because I personally don't plan to upgrade for around 10 years. I have 12 lenses, 8 EF-M and 4 EF, there is no camera on the market that can do what my M50 does in a package so small.
      Also, RF lensed are stupid expensive.
      As for EF-M being dead, Canon stop producing DSLR bodies and EF lenses long ago but they are far from dead. The 7D II and 90D communities are still thriving let alone the M50 community

    This is very similar to the M50. It works better with the back screen when you tap what you want to adjust and then use the wheel. Entry level uses likely use the screen more. I think it is essential that the flash is manual. I hate a flash ta pops up and flashes when I did not want. Also you can always keep the flash on and raise it when needed. Electronic first curtain has been the norm in M-series. Having fully electronic is nice. M50 has only very simple fully automatic mode on electronic.

    Here's the deal. I got my M50 strictly as a webcam during the pandemic. But it also got me back into my love of photography. Since then, I've added an RP and then traded that in for an R6. If the R50 was to tank in value, used, I could see hesitation in getting it. But, like the M50, if it gets the juices flowing and is more attainable than the R10(that $300 will make a difference to FAR more people than you'll admit) then it is the perfect offering from Canon. If the R10 didn't exist, I'd see your argument against the R50. But it does. And Canon cameras hold their value. There is no problem here...

Positives for me-nice an light. Always love the Canon touchscreen system-no one else comes close here. For vlogging the only cameras that compete for me would be Sony ZV1 and ZV1F but still no really good closeup but wide lens in ZV1. The AV1F 20mm lens may work. If the R50 had a 10-18mm it would be perfect.

    Dudes, you're gonna have to adjust your thinking to match the target audience for the camera. A lot of the issues you raised are perfectly valid for an advanced enthusiast, but for the target market of this camera, not so much. Not to sound arrogant here, but dumb down the presentation to the issues that are important for this market, e.g. the auto features and the lack of image stabilization.
    Just a suggestion, but dial the commentary more to the price point of the camera. Ya, I know you do that to a certain degree, but do it more. Would I buy this camera? No way, but for a person transitioning from a phone to a camera, this is probably an excellent choice. That should have been the focus.

    The only question I want answered right now is, when will Canon release an RF mount version of the EF-M 22 mm f/2? Adoption of the R system is hampered by the complete lack of affordable, fast, normal and wide angle primes. For this reason, right now, the R50 cannot replace the M50 MkII, not yet.

    For a lot of people, I feel like the M50 Mk.II is basically all they're looking for, but the R50 is a nice peace of mind since EF-M mount is, unfortunately, being abandoned and R mount will continue to grow into the future, and consumers can reliably put their current glass on a new body later on.

    Panning with electronic shutter can be done - when using the camera vertically. If you match the speed of your subject correctly then the subject will not look distorted. And the kicker is: The distortions caused to the background will not be discernible in most cases as then your rolling shutter moves equally over the unsharp background. So for stills this could make the rolling shutter less of a problem (no fix for golf clubs, baseball bats or other partially fast moving subject appendages)...

    I think the EF-M mount is still much more compelling. The APSC lineup for RF is horrifically bad, and the full frame lenses are a lot more expensive and bigger than the tiny EF-M lenses. Even the kit lens 15-45 is much smaller and has a better zoom range than the RF 18-45. The best advice I would give is to grab an M camera as they can use pretty much any lens with an adapter. Even without an adapter the EF-M 22mm and 32mm are amazing lenses, and you can also use the Sigma trio natively.

    While I don't think the EOS R APS-C cameras are bad in any way, I just don't see a good reason for getting into the system given the very limited lens lineup... And since Canon has ruled out third party options it's not even likely to improve soon.
    As a beginner I would much rather invest in MFT, Sony APS-C or Fuji X, where there's a lot of lens options for me to grow.

    Rather than buy an R50 I'd much rather trade them both in for and RP + EF adapter, which seem the best of both worlds for a great price.
    I have to admit though, I do like a mirror between the outside world and my sensor.

    I have loved my M50 for the last 4 years, and I hate that canon killed the M Line, but this seems like a decent option for an upgrade to me, simply because it gives uncropped 30p 4k. That certainly sound like a step up from the M50's 24p cropped 4k. And I think this lets you use the dual pixel AF in 4k. So if there are some affordable RF lenses now, and I can still adapt my EF lenses, I could see this being a decent option. Especially with it being the cheapest camera in the R line.

      R50 is a M50 reborn. I'm hoping R9 is R7 without EVF, making a true successor of M6ii.

    You should tell people that Canon claims that the camera supports UVC/UAC, which means that it can be used as a web camera via a USB-C connection. BUT... it turns out that the USB connection doesn't transmit audio - just video. (In other words, it doesn't really support UAC.)
    It's bad enough that the camera simply doesn't do something that the literature claimes it does. When I contacted them, they weren't interested in clearning up their documentation to reflect the truth.

    I quite like the M50 as a pocket camera, but a return to a single mount makes sense for everyone and the M glass isn't that great, the R50 offers far more options even with its limitations.

    • @tristan6509
      @tristan6509 Před rokem +1

      Canon's M glass isn't great but canon allowed 3rd party manufacturers to make M series lenses
      So you have a lot of options from sigma to the cheap ttartisan lenses. Far from perfect but the lens choices for beginners are much better than the RF mount imo which is mostly very expensive profesional lenses.

    • @tristan6509
      @tristan6509 Před rokem

      Canon has always half a$$ed their APSC lenses, the best options for their DSLRs have always been from tamron or sigma (eg. 35mm f1.4, 18-35mm f1.8, etc)
      So yeah the RF mount not allowing 3rd party lenses is a dealbreaker for me unless you already invested in EF-S lenses and are willing to adapt them for RF.
