  • Welcome back as always,
Today I compare the two hot props from both respective companies and how well each of them do on a water test. The Tempest Plus made by #mercurymarine and the Ballistic XHS XL propeller made by Michigan Wheel on the 115HP #mercury ProXS CT and my 2024 Lowe Stinger 178. The results are a little surprising.
Big shoutout to The Prop Shop out of Washington. They sent me the Ballistic prop to my doorstep at lightning speed for a great price.
Current waters in my area are apparently experiencing king tides due to heavy rains. This has caused a lot of loose things on docks and trees to become dislodged and have created dangerous conditions. I had to shut it down after a little bit of testing and was not able to try out the setup as long or as well as I'd like to.

I was a little confused by which one was better, I think it was the Merc? I have that same engine with the stock 4 blade 14X19 and I need hole shot to get up wakeboarding so I am a little worried about going up to a 24 pitch, but your hole shot seems pretty good with that.

The truth is, there is no better one necessarily. It just depends what you are looking for. Top speed or massively quick holeshot. Top speed goes for the Ballistic, holeshot only being half a second slower but the takeoff RPM on it is a problem and will require modification of the PVS holes it has already built into it to make it more competitive in that arena. The Tempest is an awesome prop, but as you can see, is slower simply because it is under pitched for my setup.
If you run the same motor on yours it really depends what RPM you are hitting right now. Top speed and holeshot is not something you can have at the same time more often than not.

    HI
What differences in the boat's trim did you notice between the 2 propellers?

I was able to trim up the Ballistic prop up a little further compared to the Tempest. That being said I also noticed that the prop didn't seem to like being lifted as high as the Tempest (by about .25") vertically on jackplate, so it's similar in performance in lifting the bow like the Tempest does and actually lifts greater than it does, but it likes to be run down a touch lower in the water similar to a Fury propeller.

Have you tried the 24 tempest I know some ranger rt 188 p boats are running it 51 mph at 6000 rpm with jackplates

I was actually thinking that as well but the way this thing performed over how I know my Tempest performs is what is stopping me. I also know those are not as heavily raked as these are because this Ballistic prop was lifting the hull to the moon. Lol. I weighed both props recently and found that the Tempest props are over 2 lbs heavier than this Ballistic prop so I doubt there will be any improvement over this one.

Upgraded to Merc 60hp 2 stroke from a 40hp. I was topping out at 27mph with the 40hp and only 28mph with the 60hp? Im planning to go with a 10.5x13p prop to see if that will make any difference. Any recommendations?

2 stroke is a different animal than the 4 stroke. What pitch prop are you currently using?

      10.5x13p

I need more context to be able to help you. You said you are thinking of stepping up to a 10.5x13 but when I asked you, you said you are currently using a 10.5x13... so which one is it actually? Also, what RPM are you at, and is your rig newer, older? The tach could be off. Also are you using GPS to confirm those speeds or the speedometer on the boat?

@extremeboating7347 sorry about that, I swapped to a10.5x13p but have not tested it out yet. Also I didn't consider a 2stroke to a 4stroke as well! Rookie mistake on my end. It's an older Mercury 99 60hp 2 stroke.

Going to have to give it a try then. I won't know what it runs to given I don't know what your previous prop was or what RPM it was at.
