THE HOMESTEAD OF GRANDMA AUGUSTINA, TANZANIA.

Miles into a hike, deep in the Marangu village, in a stunning jungle setting is where I met grandmother and grandson, Augustina and Raheem.
It was such an eye-opening and poignant moment in time to be given an insider’s point-of-view and glimpse into their simple yet beautiful lives.
They showed me how they sustained themselves on the land. They do most things differently from me-including cooking, sleeping, and toileting. If you’ve never seen a local toilet then you should definitely tune in to see and hear “everything you wanted to know about local toilets but were afraid to ask.”
This proud Chagga family has lived on this homestead for generations. Marangu village, at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania is the original homeland of the Chagga people.
There are no airs or pretensions in down-home African culture. You are welcomed home and welcomed as family.
