I think his argument just lacks a bit of consideration of other factors. Yeah maybe some people might create a character that resembles their looks but I don’t think it’s the majority. I think people. Hose their characters by much more standards then “I want myself in the game”. My best friend (male) ALWAYS chose to play female characters in the soulsborne games. I (female) almost exclusively play male characters because I want my character to fit the story, environment and the task at hand. For me it doesn’t feel right to play a female character in dragon age because I’m up against a serious threat that requires my character to be physically strong, an exceptional leader and a terrifying monster when he needs to be. So I chose to be a dark qunari warrior. And I think for me it’s just the archetype of the hero or warrior that influences me when creating my characters. And since this archetype is a predominantly male archetype my characters are almost exclusively male. Only character I chose to play as a female was a recreation of lady Maria from Bloodborne after my first playthrough cause I wanted to experience her story. And I played her in Elden ring after my first playthrough (as a male). So yeah..

So I tried to make him as close to me as possible, but much more masculine, a full set of hair, no glasses. After I broke up with the last girlfriend I had, I've been mostly making a female character. I can confidently state that my choice of character creation represents and reflects on my desires or lack of something from IRL. I wouldn't be surprised if ASM is right that statistically speaking, most people make characters that represent their race, but I think the bottom line is that *people just make characters that they want*. What influences that, which they want in a character, it can be many different factors. It doesn't need to be based on appearance. It just so happens that maybe most people just don't have anything better or original to want from a fantasy character, so they "self-insert", instead of making an interesting character. So you see a lot of people make characters of the same race, appearance or whatever. I think asm is on the right track with what he's going for, but he's wrong in regards to the bigger picture.

People play as women? Maybe it's just me but I tend to play first as myself for story games and then if I play it again (Mass Effect for example, where I play a guy first), I'll play as a girl so that the voice acting feels fresh (because fun/freshness took priority).

Here’s a solid argument about the whole “race and character” debate if we are REALLY generalizing a lot of the nuances in this topic. In my humble opinion, I don’t think an overwhelming majority of players are creating their characters based on “themselves”.
I do however, believe that an overwhelming amount of players create their characters based on how they’d like to be conceived in-game by other players, while providing themselves some level of relatability from their characters (so they don’t feel detached from their characters). Which in other words, instead of the “real themselves”, they are creating these characters on the “idealized themselves”.
Now of course this is a broad assumption with no empirical back up, but so does Asmon’s personal opinion, so I think this could make for a good argument against it.
My ACTUAL opinion on this topic is it is personal preference, there’s no way I believe that can statistically prove either point of view. So Asmon saying 80% are doing this, it might as well be because he is doing this, same as me saying it’s because of that, it’s confirmation bias.
But as an audience, watching this debate starts with Asmon dealing with the trolls intelligently (like not starting a poll) and ends with him stating anybody disagreeing him is a moron is quite sad to be honest.
Having confidence in your belief is good, but when said belief is lacking in foundation or based purely on personal experience, it can also be dangerous and misguided. There’s a thin line between confident and opinionated.

If you look on data on races in retail WoW, "human-like" races (humans and elves) don't make more than 45% of characters created in the game (The data from 2019 I could find). So if Asmongold claims that 80 percent of people there follows his "People will try yo look like themselves." trope, the Facebook group don't represent reality then. (Or 35% of playerbase in real life resembles an Orc, Troll or Tauren more than they resemble Human or Blood-Elf.) So, absolutely useless as an argument. ... His claim was that most people will choose to look similiar in the game as they look in real life . The counterargument is that it would mean that 80 percent of characters in the game would be of "human-like" races. And you cannot dismiss it with "But Orcs aren't in real life." because, if Orcs are not in real life, that's the definition of something you will not choose by its very definition as "similar to you", yet a lot of people do, so it's self-evident that a lot of people don't choose their characters in the game on the aforementioned basis if they have a chance otherwise.
I am not saying there isn't this factor (It definitely is.), I am just saying that in this case Asmongold argument is just pulling numbers out of a hat without any ability to back it up. In this case, all Asmon has provided is logically inconsistent claims and anecdotal evidence.

I once suggested on reddit that the next mass effect game main character should actually be a batarian, because there's so much story potential there to look at the events of the previous games through the lens of a batarian, where someone like shepard is going to be a more complicated figure.
No matter how much shepard united everyone against the reapers, their decisions killed 300,000 batarians, even if it was a 'choose the lesser evil' situation where the real culprits were people who didn't listen to shepard for too long. You could go so many ways. Factions within batarian society who have a more nuanced take and try to take lesson in how the event is an example of the consequences of government systems who don't do enough until it's too late, whereas other factions let what happened with Shepard validate their speciesism against humans. Then there's the whole fact that they're also pretty much a nomadic society now that's been splintered from so much of their civilization being destroyed. There's A LOT of potential there.
But at least in the wee midnight hours when I posted it, everyone fucking hated this idea because no one wanted to play as a batarian. Because of course. People want to be able to choose what they look like and the ability to make characters that look like themselves. Playing as a fem shep or male shepard fundamentally feels different as well, even if you're fine with either.

About the breastmilk stuff. Some might find hilarious other people stealing it or not understands why is it a big deal for some and why mothers have it in the office. If someone already wrote it down then sorry.
    1. Mother's who still breastfeeding, need to collect the milk frequently (Usually 3-4 hours, but it depends on a lot of factors.) or it will have consequences: if you don't do it your body will stop producing it and the more problematic one you will leak. Sounds stupid but it's really embarrassing so you need to be cautious about it. And you need a peaceful place to do it where no one bothers you.
    2. Who stole the milk actually robbing a baby from his/her food. And stealing from children is really low level.
    3. Breast milk expensive and a lot mother struggleing to produce it. So they try to collect as much as they can to be able to give the most for their little ones.

Not to mention the baby formula shortage that is happening. Stealing the breast milk is just cruel. Women want to breastfeed and they want to keep their jobs as well, so a lot of employers offer a comfortable place where they can pump. It’s usually just an unused office with a mini fridge.

In regards to the "people like to see themselves in games" argument, Asmon originally said it under the context of Overwatch where you have to choose between a set of pre-defined characters which implies one's own representation is a determining factor in which character you play as. That is where chat disagreed. Then Asmon shifted the argument under the context of roleplaying games with character creation. Which, yeah, a decent amount of people will play as themselves in roleplaying games. However the decision making process is not the same as choosing from a set of pre-defined characters in lets say fighting games, than it is from choosing how you want to create your character.

A large majority of people that do that are self-inserting. There are exceptions definitely, but i feel that is the majority. It causes the data to be skewed by ignoring specific groups. It also doesn't even reflect reality, most of the real world is NOT diverse, there are many countries like Japan that are 80+% nationals, with very few outsiders. Or, for example, if the game setting doesn't make sense to be diverse(Like maybe half of the world got destroyed or you're in a very isolated place like a small Island) then that's perfectly fine. I wouldn't EXPECT there to be a wide diversity of races/colors/etc if I'm playing a game set in a small town in Greenland or Alaska or something, or maybe a game set in an Eskimo village.

If people don't care about "representation" then it shouldn't matter if they made an entire cast indian for "no reason." They have nothing to do with the story, or they're character, they just happen to be Indian, and gay, and they're non binary or some shit.
You can't tell me people wouldn't get triggered, even if the game was good. Complaining about adding these kinds of characteristics implies there HAS to be a reason for a character to be that way, and that they don't need a reason to be a cis straight white dude. The truth is that there doesn't have to be a reason, and it doesn't harm anyone to add representation to more media. Literally the ONLY reason to complain is that you have some weird feelings about whichever characteristics they're focusing on.
In reality these companies are being scummy and trying to bribe sales with diversity, that's true. The problem is that this basically has no real bearing on the game anyway. If a game is bad, it was always gonna be bad, it just happens companies have ways of selling crap. There's no difference between a game having CGI trailers, "Forced" diversity, preorder bonuses (like NMS), etc.. There's nothing inherently wrong with a company using those things, the issue is companies use these to hide their lack of good games.
