Just because I didn't mention it in the video my camera settings: Canon R5, RF 24-70mm 2.8, f/5.0, and shutter synced to strobes at 1/200! Oh and I decided to keep the fire going since it was pretty damn cold on this shoot!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your setups and workflow. I’ve learned a lot from your channel and I can’t tell you how priceless your insights and tips are to me. So, for the last time, THANK YOU!
This is awesome!!! Thanks for posting! Can you do a video where someone would start in sports photography? For example, I grab a local guy and take them through a shoot and what you would do for someone getting into sports photography.
@@QuantzPhoto Thanks! Something simple when you have extended time. I can do it myself which I plan to do, but I would also like to see how you would start with your experience in mind. There may be something I miss that you would address. Thanks again!
As always, great work James! I love watching your processes and BTS videos. As an aspiring Commercial photographer, I value your content so much. Thank you for giving us a glimpse into your process 🤘🏼
Cool stuff. Hopefully I can use these ideas and techniques in the fall as I am the team photographer for the NY Islanders top affiliate, Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Keep the videos coming!!!!!!!!!!
Great Overview! So glad I found this channel! I'm relatively new at photography, have been a musician many years, and looking for new ways to share creative visions. I think your style is great, it gives my lots of inspiration. Thanks!
@@QuantzPhoto I've learned a great deal from your videos and your G.C. Football videos from a few years back served as inspiration for much of my sports portraits for H.S. Football. Thank You!
Hey James. Bangin' video! @James, could you speak a little to what you are getting from the studio lights in terms of effect especially as you have the two strip boxes there already that could potentially provide all the edge light necessary for separation? Are they there to create flare or hit the areas of the player that the strips won't cover? Thanks so much for taking the time.
Hey Wil, it's just about adding some dimension to those edge lights - so they do hit other areas as well as blend with the strips. If you're interested I have a video that breaks this down with more detail over on the Patreon.
Great video! For a short like this, how do you handle the deliverables? Also, how do you handle the number of deliverables? Do you give them all the files or selects?
Awesome as always. I shoot a tonne of hockey so it was nice to see familiar locations. Do you shoot custom white balance in those situation, with a x-rite or similar? Thanks for sharing!
Hello , does anyone know how I can make HSS with my Canon R5 and Profoto b10 ? With my previous canon 5Div i didn’t have problem with bigger shutter speed than 250, now my image is half black
James, your work is superb and your willingness to share trade secrets - without remuneration - is unparalleled in this day and age. You provide useful tips that may otherwise take someone hours or even weeks to figure out. Quick question; what shutter speed are you getting away with the Profotos? It looks like you’re trying to kill the ambient so I am guessing 1/200th-ish? I ask because I use a similar set up, but not quite the number of accent lights. I use to do work for some pro teams in Edmonton, Canada back in the 90s (no digital camera for immediate feedback on your results and post production on layer-less Photoshop 1.0!) I’m semi-retired now, but still get asked by the odd college, junior, or minor athletic team when they want something a little more upscale. Here’s my Sport Design Portfolio if you want to take a look: www.alexanderhill.photography/-/galleries/portfolio/sport-design
Maaan, I love your work, your deserve 3M subs instead of 3k :)
Thanks, David! Spread the good word!! 🗣

💥💥 Always so incredibly creative. 9:00 were the strip lights on either side in your final product? They are so close to the goal.
No, just framed it tighter!
Thanks!
You bet!
Lovely video. You use any software to plan out how you’ll set up lights?
Thanks and nope

Hey Shaoba, it really depends since every client is different but deliverables can run the spectrum depending on the agreement.
What strip box did you use camera left? Thanks for the great tutorials!
An old one that I don't think you can find any longer - but I believe it's around 16"x48"

Thanks, Scott! I usually have a color checker I use to calibrate.
Great video James, same as what i do with hockey players, will definitely sign up for a mentor session with you later as i would love your feedback.
Sounds great, Darren!
I see you use the umbrellas in your shots, why them vs softboxes?
I just depends on what you need out of the light - boxes are more focused and umbrellas are not - usually...
When you travel do you ship your stands and lights prior to arriving? or do you check in?
These only travel for shoot that I can drive to. I'm renting when flying...

Patreon link not working.
Thanks Dannie, I think I've got it working now!
Why do you shoot Football with their helmets but not the Hurricanes goaltender and players without helmets?
I’m pretty sure he shot more then those couple of pictures he put on the video. Plus the client dictates what they want for the most part on shoots.
@@danniewalls1329 yes I should have looked at the thumbnail first before the comment, thanks.
Yeah, Dannie has it right!

You've pretty much answered it - 1/200 with the Canon. REALLY nice work, btw!!
