I have been using the EGO 21 inch self-propelled select cut mower for about 3 years. A few things you should be aware of if you're considering buying this mower:
    1. I had some issues with the supplied 7.5 ah battery 2 years in, however, the battery carries a whopping 5 year warranty and EGO replaced it. All I had to do is to call the customer support, they'll ask you for the serial no. of the charger and the battery and that's it. Didn't even had to send the bad battery in.
    2. Once I accumulated a few EGO batteries that came with additional EGO products I bought, I stopped using the bagging blade (mentioned as the "eco" blade in the video). Even if you're bagging, it is more convenient to use the mulching blade that cuts grass into finer pieces as some will drop. You'll use more battery power but a quick battery swap and you'll be back in business.
    3. The biggest complain I have, and I think it applies to all battery powered mowers, is that in order to increase run time, they've made the mower blades pretty light. And while it has no problem cutting grass, even stalky ones with seed heads, they do chip pretty easily if you hit twigs or other hard debris on the lawn. Expect to be sharpening your blades pretty frequently.
Overall, I have pretty satisfied with my EGO mower and recommends it.

Dude! I just picked up this exact same mower up on Friday and ran it for the first time today. I got it after your first battery mower head-to-head review. The Ego hurt the pocket book, but it is an amazing mower! I previously had a cheap Greenworks mower than had no suction and had a clumping issue that just ruined my lawn.

    Heya, Ginja!
Outstanding video! You not only explained the features and performance, but demonstrated them clearly and quickly.
I have a different brand with the same features, and agree with your conclusion about the power of a battery mower.
Major concern for the home gamer is to stick with a brand for as many "tools" as possible, so you don't end up having four different brands of batteries and chargers.
Thanks for taking the time and putting in the work on this.

Great review! I’m especially impressed with the last lawn that was 8” tall and you cut 5” off! Very impressive! My gas powered mower, which is a craftsman with a Briggs and Stratton motor in it, would choke on that. I would have to cut in 2 or 3 layered passes

  • @michaeldressler2364

I have this same mower with the 10.0 a/h battery and it's great. I had a Honda mower which served me well for 8 years prior and when it came time to get a new one the EGO line-up made sense as I was already in the platform with the carbon shaft weed eater (awesome line feed feat.) and the blower. EGO products are well thought out and the mower is no different, but after 2 years of use there are cons that come along with the pros.
    Pro's
    1. Great run time on the 10.0 a/h battery and after 2 years of cuts in KS Tall Fescue the battery is not showing any signs of degeneration just yet. I'm cutting 8500 sq ft. and the 10.0 a/h battery usually still has 2 bars left after mowing for about 50-60 minutes.
    2. IT DOES NOT BOG DOWN! I'm not perfect, so naturally I don't always get in 2 mows a week and in the spring during fertilizer pushes, rain and sunny days the yard gets thick and at times used to bog down my Honda gas powered, but not with my EGO. As you said in the video, it's a torque beast and just eats up whatever you give it.
    3. The fast charger that came with your model (and mine) is FAR superior to the standard chargers! That 10.0 battery can mow my lawn, edge it, and blow away clippings before draining it down to nearly dead, but that fast charger will have you back up and running within the hour if needed! That cannot be overstated how awesome that is, as you don't have to leave batteries on the chargers unattended over night for extended periods of time if that's something of concern, but is definitely worth the extra cost if you can swing it.
    4. Fold and Stow, No gas cans, no oil changes, blade changes/removal are simple, large sturdy bag, ease of adjustability, and all the features of the mower are color coded to the Neon Green tabs. If it's green it does something! Very intuitive to use and while it is a little quieter than my old mower (although not significantly), it's easy to use and has no fumes, which means that even my wife (who had never mowed our lawn in 10 years living here!) wanted to give it a try. That's worth the price of admission alone! ;)
    Con's
    1. No mower is without its downsides and EGO, while great, is no different. There are two major ones for me, the first being that the control arms have to be fully extended in order to engage the blades and run the mower. This seems nit-picky and it for some people it is, but if you have a yard that has some tight spaces that you need to maneuver around in, it gets very difficult to do because that arm is very long when extended and must be extended fully to operate the machine. I know that doesn't sound like a big deal, but if you're in a typical residential neighborhood it's likely you're going to have some "nooks and cranny's" you have to work around and this is likely to cause some frustration, but certainly isn't a dealbreaker by any means.
    2. The Self Propel. I have a Love/Hate relationship with this thing. I love it's speed adjustability and the fact that you can use it even when the blades aren't running like you'd have to with a gas mower. Both are big Pro's don't get me wrong...BUT. If you're not engaging the Self Propel all the time, because you're doing a smaller area that requires pushing and pulling (like under a swing set or under low hanging trees/bushes) then engaging and disengaging the SP function is tedious at best, but usually is a massive hindrance because there is a bit of a lag between the controls and the application. Not a significant amount of lag, and when you're doing long passes it'll likely never cross your mind, but if you're doing short passes and engaging the SP frequently it'll start getting annoying very quickly. Also, when not using the SP, like with most gas mowers (or at least my Honda did), the back wheel(s) will lock up when you're stopping to turn and engage your next pass. This infuriates me to no end and it happens all the time during these short passes as well as when you just stop on a longer straight away, like when picking something up out of the yard. It's so annoying that I've even contemplated selling this mower to get the the non-SP version. The fact of the matter is that the EGO is really well made and they use good, heavy duty, durable plastics. Their mowers simply don't weigh that much and pushing the mower is so easy because it's incredibly lightweight and I often find myself not using the SP function as it's simply not needed, but usually because I have some bumpy areas in my lawn (renovating this fall) and the SP in bumpy areas is just not ideal for getting a good cut as the mower, being lightweight, has a tendency to bounce around in those areas a lot, and will sacrifice the quality of cut, where simply pushing the mower more slowly through there gives a better result.
All in all, I really do enjoy my EGO for all the reasons mentioned above. Ease of use and the fact that there's basically no maintenance outside of sharpening blades are great, not to mention universal batteries across the platform which makes other tools cheeper because you can then buy them tool only once you've amassed 2 or 3 batteries because you really only need so many for residential work. The fact that EGO is pretty much the leader in the electric lawn tool space says a lot about overall quality, which has not gone down from what I can see over the last 4 years when I got my 1st ego product and they're still innovating in the space which is great because it means better products will eventually come to market. I have recommended EGO many times and will continue to do so, although I do caution about the SP models for the reasons mentioned above. For some that's not a big deal, but for my workflow it's been significant and deserves attention.
Now if EGO would only make a 2 blade 30" deck I'd be in heaven!!! C'mon EGO! Give us a wide deck option that I don't have to ride on and fork over $6k for! I'll happily give you my money for an EGO direct competitor to the Timemaster!!!

I love my new Ego mower. I put Nu Finish on the bottom of the mower before I ever cut with it, and use a Liberman kitchen broom to sweep all the clippings stuck to the bottom of the mower. The long handle means I have no chance of getting cut by the blades, and the Nu Finish makes it so nothing really sticks to the mower as long as I don't let it dry on. My mower came with a 7.5Ah battery which is enough to mow my whole yard and have enough battery left to blow the sidewalk and porch with my Ego 765 CFM leaf blower.

I have last year's version of this mower (2150SP) with the 10.0 ah battery, which replaced an aging gas Toro Super Recycler. Overall I love the Ego mower for the convenience and surprising level of power it offers. Although I loved my Super Recycler, not sniffing gas fumes anymore is a huge plus along with the ease of storage. I just wish my Ego mower had something like Toro's Personal Pace self-propelled, which is excellent and makes it difficult to go back to pre-set self propel settings.

The Lowes and Amazon websites and some other CZcams videos show it only going to 7-height settings and from 1.5" to 4". But I can tell you my lever has 8 settings and it goes down to about 1". Also, the EGO website manual says 8 settings from 1" to 4". It looks like EGO changed the height setting but kept the mower model number the same.

  • @steviem5279

I've mentioned it in another video, but I love my Ego. Mine is about 5 years old or so, it is the 21 inch push mower (not self propelled) and at the time it came with a 5.0 AH battery which is still working. My lawn is 5,000 square feet and I have more than enough run time on that 5.0 AH battery that I can finish it on a full charge with ease and it takes me roughly 35-40 minutes to mow the lawn, more or less. I also have a 7.5 AH battery that came with the Ego backpack blower (which I got for $299 at Home Depot after they lost the rights to sell Ego to Lowes) so I can use that one as well.
My mower has 6 height settings but the stock blade isn't great and the suction with it not very good, the high lift blade on the other hand is the better option but it's only a single blade and not a double blade like these new ones have. What I noticed though is as the bag begins to fill that's when it leaves the debris. With mine, the grass tends to build up in the front of the back as it fills so what I do it stop take it off and push the clippings as far back as possible and then it works fine until it fills up again.
The two pet peeves I do have with it: one is that if you like to mow high, it's not the best even with the high lift blade. Mine has 6 height settings and the #3 setting is where you get your best cut and 4,5, 6 tends not to cut as well and the grass gets matted down which becomes a mess as the season progresses so I cut my grass on the #3 setting. The second issue I have, and I noticed it on this video too, is I am not sure of the wheels are heavy or maybe it's the mower itself but for some reason the wheels tend to flatten out the grass a lot which I never noticed happening before on my old gas mower and maybe that has to do with the suction being better on the gas more so it may have lifted the grass where the wheels went over on the next pass.
Overall, I love it and the best positive for me is the fact that you don't smell like exhaust fumes like you do with a gas mower and it's a lot quieter. That being said, I still loved my gas mower, it was a Lawn Boy with the bag that came out of the side. My dad got it from his old next door neighbor, who was a landscaper, back around 1988 or so and that think lasted 30 years when it finally died back in 2018 and that's when I got the Ego mower. That Lawn Boy was an absolute beast and I'm not sure they build them like that anymore...it was a gas mower which you mixed 2 cycle oil into the gas and it worked like a charm.

Only if you can't stand filling it with gas or the maintenance. The electric mower won't quit, the batteries weaken or die before the mower ever even thinks of not working well. The issue is that replacing the batteries is not cheap. I have had an ego mower since 2018. Still works great. 1 of my smaller battery packs won't work anymore and stopped right outside of the warranty. But still works good. Whether to trade your Honda commercial? Again depends on how much you don't like the gas and maintenance, otherwise just keep the Honda. But that's just my opinion.

I've been hammering the EGO train for awhile now. I hate going to grab a tool and having to tune it up or figure why it won't start... With EGO I've never had that problem. I also don't have to hunt down clean gas anymore. I have 5 EGO batteries so run times not a issue, especially when one 7.5 amp does the lawn and weed eating. The only issue that I have with battery is the stand alone edger kills batteries quick if the dirt is wet. Literally took two batteries to edge my 3/4 acre yard... And it kept bogging out and I had to sweep the mud out of the guard. I was extremely disappointed as I've never ran into anything gas could do better up until then. Well that and the chainsaw. Chainsaws awesome but much weaker than gas. Either way you can't replace the reliability and ease of use. I work 65hrs a week 6 days a week with a family and I don't have time to maintain gas engines.

So far I really love the height adjustment ease and the convenience of being able to flip the ego on its side to change blades, clean the deck. It's been a great gas engine mower, no complaints from me, but it's time to go high voltage and stop buying gas or having to run to the gas station to buy gas. It's a thing of the past now. What engine speed did Ego measure torque at? Even gas mowers mislead with their torque rating at 2500 rpm, and that is far too low of a blade speed to achieve a decent cut. In my opinion 3000 rpm minimum with 3200+ is preferred for a good cut. Most consumer gas mowers are factory set at 2900-3000 and benefit from an extra 100-300 rpm, and I'm thinking the battery mowers are non adjustable in terms of engine/blade speed.

If your battery mowers ran at that speed they would be nearly as loud as gas mowers, and the batteries would be dead in 20min

I was saddened by Honda's announcement to end their push mower production, but when I see the electric mowers cut/mow quality...at the end of the day that's all that matters, along with the accidental abuse durability (sticks and baseball rocks) and reliability. Aside from the silly wax cartridge that causes random nonstarts, Honda had the perfect gasoline mower...but it's pretty heavy and producing it at higher costs isn't sustainable. Nobody will want to buy a gasoline $1200-$1500 21" push mower. Mine is a top model and I need to disassemble the entire back end of it because the transmission fluid wasn't filled to the proper level...and I'm not dealing with the local dealer in my area. These electric models- you don't need to deal with that ever unless you cause the damage.

Yeah it has that for about 5 minutes... Anyone that knows anything about it knows battery is never as powerful... Even my electric drills are great for convenience but don't have the power of a plug-in cord drill... Hey but if you're okay with it... Fine with me 😁.. I think they probably have some good features though for the average homeowner

I guess another downside is that it doesn’t go to an inch or lower. Would be nice for us guys who cut low.

this 10ah battery only used about 2/5th of the battery over 5500 sq ft. i also crossed the street using the select drive about 6 times during the filming process. I'm confident it'll do 12,000 sqft on one charge which is more than most.

Their summer products are fine but a battery snowthrower won’t beat a gas.

Beg to differ. My single stage rocks! In your defense I haven’t had a chance to compare a two and three stage system side by side

@@PestandLawnGinja Maybe I should have said won't be a gas on my street lol I just see my neighbour across the road having to go 6 inches at a time and then back off to let the motor catch up and he has the EGO. I have a Toro single stage it has it's particulars in terms of all the extra maintenance. Wasn't trying to be confrontational. Love your channel!

    Unboxing . . . needs better skills.
There's no way to know if your items is received DOA or with serious hidden damaged, and so on large expensive items, so I'll always save all packaging for some time.
Its so much easier to return a new item, within the return period, by using the original box and packaging. The warranty on both tool is 5 and so is the battery (but only if you register the warranty before the initial 3yr warranty expires). So I guess I'll be keeping the huge ass box for 5 years 🤷‍♂
