Thank you SlickBiker. I really dig the Claris 8 speed group set. The FC-R2000 cranks with the BB-RS500 are kismet. It is considered entry level but in my experience, it has been worthy. I checked out your video before buying my road bike and am indeed happy! The climbing gears are limited but I have no problems after all due to my riding style. Bike tech has come a long way since I've upgraded from an '86 Raliegh Pro. STI shifting on Claris is great. I had STI in between road bikes but Claris is really smooth even though it's 8 speed with a short-medium rear derailleur.
Tiagra is the best groupset for value/dollar wise (combined with Ultegra brakes and Dura-Ace polymer shifter cables). Money saving with the Claris goupset is very small and since it's 8 speed the upgrading isn't possible. That said the Claris groupset isn't bad at all, so much better than the budget groupsets of 10 years ago for example.
Consider that a well adjusted cheap groupset beats a slightly off adjusted expensive groupset. And all groupsets, regardless of price, go out of adjustment so very easily. Park Tools has excellent tutorials on how shifters work, and precisely adjusting the derailers with a magnifying glass makes the shifting of the Claris groupset very satisfying.
It looks like Shimano did for Claris what it did for Sora last year. I got a chance to play a bit with the new Claris on an entry-level road bike I came across at my local Trek store just before Christmas. From a distance, it looks like all the other Shimano road sets. Shimano has made a very competent group set available for the masses. In my bike collection I have a road bike with the full 105 set from 2000. 105 was 8 speed then. Claris today seems about as good.
JHeino10 I know, but my wife is kind of new to road cycling and might struggle with larger cranks. Though I could let her try the Tiagra and see if she can handle it.

I have now riden Claris R2000 for 1000 km and am absolutely thrilled, shifting is as smooth as butter. Adjusting the rear derailleur was easy, it took me a while to adjust the braze-on front derailleur, but now it works great. I have only the problem that the chain starts to grind on the front derailleur from about the 6th sprocket... this limits it's potential slightly. Any advice?
It's going to do that since you're cross chaining. If you're in the big cog in the front and the big cog in the back or close to the big cog it'll start to rub since the chain is running cross ways. If you shift the front to the small cog then it goes away.
You can manually widen the derailleur cage with a pair of pliers, take the derailleur off and stick the pliers in the cage and then pull apart the pliers to widen, did it on mine, sorted.

5:40 Regarding the rear derailleur, quote: “We have here steel and alloy, and some plastic”. Are you certain there is plastic in this rear derailleur ? Is there a source for this ? What exactly is made out of plastic, is it a structural element ? Since you seem to make the mistake of juxtaposing “steel” with “alloy”, I'm not sure how reliable this video is ? Steel _is_ an alloy with iron. It is difficult to believe that the structural element you seem to point to, which holds the upper guide wheel, is not made out of metal, but made out of “plastic” ? If they did that, I will probably start looking for a different brand for a group set.
"alloy" is a euphemism for aluminum alloy (if you are yank) and "alloy" is a euphemism for aluminium alloy, if you are in Europe, typically 6061 or 7000 series. "Plastic" is a euphemism for non-metallic material, either a therrmoplastic or a CFP. Shimano is well regarded, you should have zero worries about structural integrity of the cage.
@@nutsboltsarchery4356 I think so as well that they are not using plastic in the cage. It is merely some black finish on metal, that he might be pointing to, possibly even thinking it is plastic. Thanks for updating me on the word use of some people, who are using the word “alloy” differently than some would suspect. Incidentally I am in Europe, and the word “alloy” does not exist here, because we are Dutch. The word “legering” does exist, which mean a combination of metals, and seems to have the same meaning as “alloy”. It would be further detailed by saying “ijzer legering” translating as “iron alloy”, meaning the material is mostly iron, with other ingredients. Similarly: “aluminium legering”: “aluminium alloy” (mostly aluminium). www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alloy does not have the by you suggested meanings, so I'm guessing this might be cycling specific jargon, or … deteriorated use of the language ? It seems a bit strange if cycling would have imprecise jargon for metals, because of the importance and wide variety of alloys, certainly including those based on iron as well, in the cycling industry. As far as I know, the word “plastic” is used for some solid materials derived from petroleum (fossil oil), which I'm sure you where referring to.
