Why "Conquer" Is the Most Underrated Finale in the Series

  • The Walking Dead has had many different bombastic season finales, finales that change the group dynamic forever, finales filled with gunfire and hordes of walkers, and one finale that was a bit more tame than all of this. When I say tame do I mean bad, absolutely not, but the season 5 finale Conquer explored a lot of character drama, and set the stage for a lot of what was to come.

    1:26 - 5:52 - Try
    5:53 - 11:40 - Conquer

    15:06 - 15:42 - Rick has become Shane
    15:43 - 17:04 - Rick's Love Interests
    17:05 - 18:17 - Glenn & Nicholas

To see these two men who swing back and forth between whole and broken finally meeting again and to see how their roles are wholly reversed from the last time they saw each other really added some weight to the journey that was seasons 3 to 5. Hordes and hordes of walkers has been a thing since season 1. Rick has to hide in the tank from a city sized horde. Abraham, Rosita, Eugene, Maggie, Tara and Glenn are fully sidelined by an impenetrable wall of walkers when driving the firetruck in season 5.

    • @TobyRawal
      @TobyRawal Před rokem +11

      Yeah, it felt like everything was still on edge, even this relatively large community was held together by threads. What every person did individually had large implications on the group as a whole, something that got lost as seasons went on and the towns/communities became so big it was hard to tell who was actually in danger at any given moment. Relationships with neighbours etc were vital, tension between any one of the Alexandrians and our group were a source of potential threat. I understand finding more people in the world, but this season 5 point was that limit for how many manageable characters you could have before it started to become over saturated.

    To me, Michonne and Rick always made sense. Back in season three, when Michonne asks Rick why he decided to let her in the prison and not just take the baby formula she was carrying, Rick says "Must have been something else then." Then they had that talk about seeing their dead exes and bonding over that. They really seemed to understand each other from the beginning. I also think that Michonne finding the son she lost in Carl and Carl finding the mother he lost in Michonne really solified them as a family. So when Michonne and Rick finally got together, it felt really natural!

    Seasons 4-6 were peak TWD imo. Negan/Simon were the last lingering embers of that peak to me and I wish season 7-8 were just combined into a single season to help the pacing. In retrospective, the scene of feral Rick's eyes lightening up after hearing the children playing outside Alexandria and the group entering the gates would have been the perfect happy ending to the show. Wouldn't have been satisfying to comic readers, but would have been very nicely done

      I think there's simply a nostalgia factor there. Especially when seeing everything up to the prison arc for the first time you feel the intense danger and the barely surviving. It was the arc where you see the group barely getting food. At the brink of eating dog food etc. It was just highly dangerous.
      After on the surface level it was just safe zone/community hopping. Of course there was a lot of nuance and character development for some of the characters after they started safe zone hopping.

    Richonne was already in motion for a lot of fans and was a slow burn that I saw coming. Right after Lori, a woman comes to him with food for his baby and not needing to be constantly protected like Lori. I called it. When richonne actually consumates things it felt rushed. But rewatch season 4 and 5 and the chemistry and reluctant vulnerability was there for them both all along. Even in season 3 when michonne stays half in and half out. I think it was carl/Rick that kept her there. We see that when she has her chance to dip after the prison falls. She crosses paths with their tracks and follows to be with them. Look at their reactions when she comes through the door.

  • @bishbosh4815
    @bishbosh4815 Před rokem +57

    Season 5 has a very clear theme: the old world vs the new world. Over the course of 4 seasons, we saw the characters go from being ordinary people thrust into the apocalypse, learning how to survive, how to organise themselves, how to deal with threats, what philosophy and morality still applies in this world, how to form a community, becoming family, experiencing loss, pain, trauma and growth, and eventually becoming hardened survivors. Season 5 starts off with them dealing with their biggest threat yet and narrowly avoiding death, escaping and later killing cannibals who led them to the slaughter. The characters were reunited and reinvigorated with the hope that Eugene could create a cure, but when the truth came out, it shattered that hope, and they all realised there was no way out, this was it, this was the world they lived in now. The Beth hospital episodes are pointless 😂, but I think both her and Tyreese's deaths represented the death of innocence, hope and the last attachment to the ways of the old world. Glenn was still a moral compass and still hadn't killed anyone, but he had adapted more to this world than Beth or Tyreese who still kind of lived in denial and weren't meant for that world. Then they reached Alexandria and we got that stark constrast of a peaceful "safe" community where the people had to shielded from the harsh brutal world outside, and after all the group had been through, they were grateful for this sanctuary but distrustful and sceptical that they knew what they were doing and could keep a place like this safe for very long. And in the rest of the season we see the two worlds colliding and Rick trying to show the Alexandrians what it takes to survive in this world and that their way of blissful ignorance will get them killed. He just goes about it in the wrong way and, while I think all the protagonists know this and agree with him, they're divided on how far they need to go to prove it and not letting their brutal survival instincts take over, and again, not letting too much of the old world go. This "modern drama" and this theme continues into 6A I think as they're dealing with similar issues of the Alexandrians learning how to fight and growing more confident and world weary, 2 big existential threats that they overcome together, and finding a balance between being a survivor and living more of life like the world before the apocalypse. And then of course Negan comes along and fucks everything up 🤣

    My absolute favourite part of Glenn's entire arc is his relationship with Nicholas. It exemplifies everything that makes you root for Glenn: his willingness to help others when he, Nicholas and Noah are trapped in the revolving door. His mercy in not killing Nicholas when even I was screaming at the screen for him to pull the trigger. His hope that anyone, even someone as despicable as Nicholas, has redeemable qualities. Glenn basically guides Nicholas through character growth from a whining, sniveling coward into someone who I was legitimately sad to see die.

    There are seeds about Rick and Michonne from the very very beginning but I believe that was just the natural chemistry between Danai and Andy.
    The first moment that should make it CLEAR is the end of the episode "Clear".
    When they are at the back of the car ready to leave there's a moment where Rick asks Michonne to drive because "He sees things" and then he gives Michonne a quick little up and down, check out. It's brief but once you see it you can't unsee.

    Season 5 is the end of walkers being the primary threat to the group and the beginning of their fellow human beings being the primary threat to survival. I truly believe that is why the season opener started with a horde of walkers of a size we had never seen before then. It was a sort of finale of walkers in a season opener. Because as we all know Negan was just around the corner. I think the seasons 1,2,3 and 5, 6, 7 were the best. After Rick left, the show basically became a WB low budget sci-fi series. I can’t stand how they handled the show after Rick.

    Yeah the thing with Jessie wasn't real for Rick... for one he is completely outside his mind for the duration of it. He puts her and her kids at risk even though, if he had given it some thought, any thought at all he'd know they were ready to walk through that herd. He knows her for all of one week. Doesn't ever think or talk about her after she dies. Gets with Michonne pretty quickly after that and immediately tells Carl that with Michonne it's different, he disavows it himself, he refers to it as this weird thing he did when he wasn't all that well. So, no it's not this great love at all

      He doesn’t get with Michonne pretty quickly there’s actually a two month time gap and you notice it by he’s not wearing his ring anymore. Plus the show runners confirmed and acknowledged this. And Rick loved the idea of Jessie being a perfect family with his children and he tried to envision this lifestyle for himself however he realised it was not compatible for him and more importantly he’s changed.
      Rick telling Carl that this was different was bc Carl and Michonne established a relationship before Rick and he realised this. It’s a way of him showing that he was sure of what he wants and this is something he wanted to pursue which was being happy with the right kind of family. Rick needed someone who he can rely and Michonne was that person. It is definitely love and as the show goes on you see it from Rick’s perspective solidifying my point.

    • @KurokamiNajimi
      @KurokamiNajimi Před měsícem

      True that they didn’t have that much time together but Rick definitely had some strong feelings for her if she had lived he probably would never have ended up with Michonne considering how long it took for them to become a couple in comparison. Andrew didn’t make any comments that implied he didn’t it was the person asking the question who mentioned Lori. He wouldn’t have went as far about Pete if he didn’t that’s why she asks him if he does this type of thing just for anyone. Real reason she isn’t mentioned is because she wasn’t that prominent of a character and his love interest became Michonne soon after but Rick says he thinks about everyone he has lost everyday
      You could say there wasn’t a better option for them to escape the situation or that it’s just bad writing, arguably even the way they died. When Sam freaked out they could have just picked him up or they could have done that to begin with and told him to close his eyes. Even after that they didn’t have to just stand there and let Jessie freak out too Rick or Michonne could have forced her to let go and keep walking. This type of thing happens a lot it’s just plot. His reaction to her death showed how much he cared he was in shock and only snapped out of it because of Carl being in danger. When you think about it it’s one of the most tragic things in the show that they really shouldn’t have just glossed over. Realistically he’s having PTSD from telling her he could protect her and her family only to get them all killed

    I saw Rick an Michonne as a couple right after Lorrie died. The moment the dramatic scene at the fencing when they first laid eyes in each other was foreshadowing the long slow burn 🔥 builds from 3:12 Clear where Carl gives them both a look as she passes Rick the line bullet she finds on the floor. Also how he looks at her some kind of way while she’s eating Morgan’s granola bar. He appears intrigued. Carl proclaimed her as one of us!
    He turns and watches her walk out of the kitchen in that house the Claimers took over after asking her to befriend Carl, which she had already done. He stares and looks her up and down, watches her walk away a few times while living at the prison. He always looks away when she notices him looking or staring multiple times, trusts her opinions and judgment in season 3 thru 6’s first half. He trusts her with his life and children and jokes in playful ways. Gives her slight shoulder touches. He always knows where she is and how long she took a shower when they first arrived in Alexandria.
    I believe Rick was attracted and intrigued from day one but kept it to himself and even tried to ignore it until he just gave in to his love on that sofa next to her after holding her hand while giving her mints.
    The way he makes out with her the first time is filled with loving looks and smiles and leads to making love. It’s not sudden or inappropriate cause it’s slowly and beautifully been built up. Anyone that rewatches the series will see it if they missed it the first time.

    When I first saw Rick and Michonne kiss and what ultimately lead to sex, I was thrilled. I felt they had so much romantic tension dating as far back as the last episode of S3. S4 through S5 I was like "Just kiss already!" Lol. Regarding Rick going after Jessie, I thought it was just forced. It's true to the comic,but even in that, I thought it was rammed through. It had literally no buildup except for a few episodes. And for Rick to say he would save anyone else, that's a load of bullshit. I personally think he was just trying to butter Jessie up. Domestic violence is wrong and disgusting regardless of who or why. And it doesn't surprise me that Deanna ignored it because earlier that season, she said she was a congresswoman. Politicians are notorious for ignoring shit for the sake of keeping their approval rating high unless it directly affects them or their career. So when she said that, I was thinking "You slimy politician." So Deanna admitting that she knew but was ignoring it doesn't seem like much but it's the politician in her.
    When I saw Rick go off after the fight with Pete (a fight that bothered me for a reason), I said out loud "Rick finally said what Shane said years ago. Shane though I felt was already unhinged and the apocalypse just gave him freedom to be his true self, because most people wouldn't be able to accept shit like that only weeks after the world goes to hell. Now the reason the Rick vs Pete fight bothered me is Rick is supposed to have been a deputy sheriff. Those people are trained extensively in HTH combat, so why Pete gives Rick a good fight is beyond me.

    He had issues, but Glenn forced me to like him. I wanted Glenn to teach him how to survive despite how flawed he was when they first met 😢
    I also loved Sasha’s growth. She’s still trying to recover from loosing Bob, and then Tyrese almost immediately after. Gabriel challenges her faith because he is loosing his own, just like her. And he is a preacher. They both want to be taken out, but they can’t take out each other, because all they have is each other (Maggie reminds her). And then in the end, they sit in a circle of prayer and they pray together. It was beautiful. Despite everything all three of those characters have been through, especially Maggie and Sasha, they overcome their fight, coming together to heal.

Thinking for our own survival and constantly thinking of the worst situation and fears and Nicholas played it perfectly especially with him committing suicide at the end since he couldn’t handle living in this world. Yep and your concluding point is what I love about this show despite all the harsh challenges they faced they continue to live and push forward. This overall morale really resonates well with me.
      Also I can’t wait for Rick and Michonne’s spin off to come and to see them finally reunite. The ending of season 11 when Rick said she gave him “ an unstoppable life” this love between them was so perfect. And the fact Rick will find out that he has a son is so heart warming and his reaction to it is so anticipated.

    I’m still on my first viewing of the series (literally just started S11 today) and at least since the episode Clear, I think it was obvious, though still subtle enough. Rick and Michonne gave plenty of signs of their mutual attraction. It was never a surprise to me. Whether people saw it or not, whether they wanted it or not, only one thing is for sure. Rick and Michonne getting together was always PLAUSIBLE. It was never out of the blue. Honestly, I think a large part of the issue is people didn’t consider Michonne to even be an option for Rick. As if it would never have crossed his mind. But even if someone thought that, to not see the signs is…odd. As for Jessie, I wonder whether or not there was room in the show for two abused women turned capable survivor, Carol having already completely going through that metamorphosis. At times, I wish Carol had been the one to take Pete out rather than Rick, to protect Jessie as someone who had been through the same hell. Would have felt more satisfying for me, but that’s only my personal opinion.

      @samcresp5440 Před rokem

      Whilst it would mirror and parallel Carol’s arc, I don’t think I would’ve found it satisfying. Carol came into her own and escaped the “battered woman” narrative, she became as ruthless and tough as the rest, and a lot of that season 5/6 was her exploration as her own strong person and breaking from her past, including the bereavement of being a mother. She’s still motherly but her tenderness and gentle heart was hidden beneath her hardened exterior (her with Sam, Jessie’s kid). I think drawing her back in to being the wife-beater-vigilante kinda defeats her arc, even though it fits her original narrative. She’s more than what Ed did, and she touches on it and how she changed for the better, but she also was on a war-path of letting people learn to fend for themselves and become like her. She was adamant that the sheltered people like children and beaten wives needed to learn to defend themselves and she had a tough love approach. I don’t think it would’ve satisfied her current motivations and Rick being unhinged and willing to kill a man to appease a woman and play house is totally in line with his arc.

      @Amber-se7qq Před rokem +1

She was the one who was communicating with Sam and discovered this news through him. So it sounds to me like she was concerned and wanted Rick to step in. Those do not sound like the actions of someone who wants Jesse to learn to fend for herself. Plus, Carol already personally threatened Pete. She said she could do it and no one would believe she was capable of it. That being said, I don't have an issue with how it played out in the show. I have no issue with Rick confronting Pete. I only meant that it would be satisfying FOR ME, to see Carol take Pete out because I hate abusive men and it is incredibly satisfying to see a woman put a stop to that.

    You call it the 'Modern Drama' era and sum it up as season 5B, and while accurate I would also say that seasons 1-5 is the golden era of character drama in The Walking Dead. I always thought the show just felt different somehow starting with S6 and I think that's why. In season 6A we did get some good stuff, but most of the season was focused on the horde and then without taking a breather it was straight on to Hilltop and The Saivours.
    I love the scene of Morgan reuniting with Rick, as you mentioned the last time they saw each other the roles were completely reversed and I like to think that when Morgan set out to find his only friend in the whole world he really saw Rick as this guy who would have the answers, so to then see him execute someone in front of a crowd of people and see how different the two men had become, I watch that scene all the time.
    It upsets me that they didn't give us such good drama during the war with the saivours, especially when they did it so well during the war with the governor.
    Also I just want to say I love how you put it, saying how the Wolves were basically this unseen time bomb for the whole season and Rick had to prepare everyone, now their namesake makes so much more sense to me

    This is easily one of the best! I remember just gasping at the finale scene, mouth hung open for at least 5 minutes afterwards. Ricks acting in these episodes were easily some of his best in the series. Which is saying a lot because Andrew Lincoln was always on point! You do amazing work by the way.

    Hollowed out trees definitely do exist and I would strongly recommend against going in/near them especially on a windy day.

    One of ky favorite seasons. Rick knowing better bc of his time on the run with the group and trying to show these people that they're not safe without him is classic walking dead to me. Andrew Lincoln always nails his scenes.

    I love Carol's arc in this season. Her and Rick were both unhinged and inabling each other's madness
    Oh and yes, Rick and Michonne were always happening, Jessie was just another symptom of Rick's mental breakdown episode. And you mentioned what Michonne told Rick (that she'll be with him no matter what) but you didn't mention what Rick told HER, that he didn't tell her because she'd talk him out of it, because she's the only one who can talk him out of and convince him of things, she's the one who has that influence over him. So no it wasn't surprising. I like Jessie fine, but Rick and Michonne were happening before her and were gonna happen after her

      And matter of fact the first thing Rick does when he gets with Michonne is disavow the whole thing with Jessie. He talked to Carl, which he didn't even do with Jessie, and he told him "This is different". Different than him and Jessie, as in, this is real, that wasn't

      Also, Rick had taken off his wedding ring with Michonne. He didn't do that with Jessie. Rick was ready to move forward with Michonne. He wasn't ready with Jessie, it would never have worked. Rick and Michonne were always going to happen, there was a great foundation and genuine love. Rick, Michonne and Carl were a fantastic unit 😊
