A small oil leak on a Toyota is a blessing in disguise. I would much rather check my oil everyday and have a rust free frame. A slow drip seems to coat everything perfectly
I've owned one of these. I rebuilt the engine on mine. The turbo engine had different pistons which dropped the compression down to 8:1 instead of the usual 9.4:1in the typical 22re. This is necessary for longevity when turbocharging an ICE. The lost compression is made up for by cramming more air into the cylinder with the turbo. The problem with the stock turbo from Toyota is that it was one of the few bad things that Toyota ever built. Something about the impeller blades or some crazy fluid dynamics above my pay grade. This resulted in minimal gains from having a Turbo over the naturally aspirated truck. Anyway, the fix back in 2003 when I was doing mine was to install a Garrett T3/04 hybrid turbo. There was a guy with a website back then who was getting 250hp on the dyno with his engine that had that turbo. Insane! It's easier and cheaper these days to turbo and tune an older vehicle like this. If you haven't already done so, the first thing you need to do is get a better turbo.
Bah. I owned a from new to 200k miles 1986 2wd Xtra cab turbo truck. Stock. Never had one issue with the turbo. I was dedicated to frequent and consistent oil changes and NEVER ever shut it down hot. I always let it idle at least 30-45 seconds before shutting it off. Longer if I'd run it hard. This I feel was the reason for its longevity. Most people never did this, and with a non-water jacketed journal bearing turbo, you are just asking for trouble if it was shut down hot. With that said, it is not a robust turbo design.

Such a cool find! I live in Hawaii and old Toyota pickup trucks are like gold here. Impossible to find one like yours! I have a '91 Toyota pickup single cab 4x4 and it is a beast. Has the 22RE as well. I picked it up for $2500 and sure enough just like you, ended up replacing a bunch of parts on the neglected engine to get it running good. A oil leak from the oil seal and leak from the water pump led me to replace the timing chain and plastic guides since I was already in there. That also meant replacing the front cover and removing the whole head as well. Luckily this did give me the chance to clean every single nut, bolt, and basically the entire engine in the process. I replaced the starter since I was already so deep in the engine. Cleaned all the buildup on the valves and cylinders. And did a full EGR delete. FUN FACT: You do not need any of those vacuum lines on the top of the valve cover, there is only one you need which goes to the power steering. Everything else is pointless emissions crap. (Luckily we don't have smog control in Hawaii) But that being said, it was an amazing learning experience and now I know that the truck is good for another 300k+ miles. (P.S. These engines can take as much timing as you can give them until they start pinging. More timing=more power. Mine is almost fully advanced at +1.5 and gave it a big boost in power)
Love this generation Toyota truck. Had a couple of REALLY nice 2wd low rider type trucks back in the day, a 1985 2wd 22R carburated, Extra cab, 5 speed, manual steering, nice bench seat with armrest that reclined, not much else on options. That one stayed stock. Also had a several years later around 2001 1 owner, old lady 1988 2wd, reg cab with no room, 22-RE fuel injected, 5 speed, that one was a delux model, had carpet, a lot of sound deading, power steering, lots of chrome trim, powder blue paint, stripes down the side, 14" wheels with chrome beuaty rings, it was a much nicer truck despite the lack of room compared to my stripper 1985 reg cab. I actually modded that truck, lowered, enikie wheels, paint was damn near perfect when I got it, just polished it a lot.
You can use ATF in the power steering system but they come from the factory with clear power steering fluid. Also the PCV valve is likely not rattling because it's full of oil. The PCV valve being stuck would cause excessive pressure buildup and leaking seals not excessive oil to pass to the intake. If it was stuck open it still would not cause oil to pass through. What you have is excessive Blow by. Engine needs an overhaul
@@jesset489 if you look closely you will see that the pcv valve hose feeds directly into the manifold on this truck and the oil was produced from a different hose further forward of the pcv valve but also on the valve cover, that is the hose which connects to the flexible intake hose. Also, being an old turbo aside, oil in your intake manifold or plumbing is ALWAYS caused by excessive amounts of blow-by. There are too many baffles and such in the path for oil to just "naturally" get into the vent system even with a stuck open valve......hell I always just toss my pcvs and mount a hose directly and I have NEVER had oil in my intake until I had worn out rings and valve seats/seals. But what do I know, I've only been fixing and rebuilding my own engines for nearly 30yrs now......I'm sure your 3-5 yrs of experience is far superior to the rest of ours.
i owned that same year/model. it was the best vehicle of my life. got it for 650 dollars when i was 16 years old. i was a good ol boy and gave it hell. it defined what vehicles are capable in my mind. rivers, creeks, mud, hills, rocks, etc... nothing would stop this truck but rust. living in upstate NY and it being old, and me beating the living shit outa it, the frame snapped in half when i was like 22 years old. but it was a great 6 years of owning it. sold the engine for 150 bucks to!
I bought the same but a 85 2wd in California while I was living in Vietnam. I have had it 5yrs with one yr. sitting while I returned to Saigon. The truck has been the cheapest, best running truck I've ever owned. Replaced the Brake and Clutch master cylinders due to age. Parts cost a whopping $25 total...yes, that's all. I get all my parts at Pep Boys and I pay extra for their Lifetime warrenty. Also, replaced the fuel pump/filter...$35. Oh, and Air/oil filters with every oil change...3mon or 3,000miles. That's it folks. Have you heard of Junk Yards Sunny Boy? That's the cheapest way to get odd replacement parts. I once needed a 2inx10in 1/8 thick plastic face plate. Amazon wanted $139 with Free shipping(Woopie), Ebay wanted $39 +free S&H and my local Used Toyota Junk Yard wanted $10 if I came to take it off the junker. Kids today think they can only shop on their cell phone. ha..ha. You just might be surprised if you got off your Fat Butt.
where was this fabled toyota junk yard at ? I live in socal and frequent local junk yards but have never seen a toyota xtra cab 4x4 (1990) like mine in one ever! They must all get diverted to where you go?
So I have to wonder, what kind of condition would those rubber junkyard parts be in after sitting there for 30+ years? Sometimes it's better to buy new. I'm an old fart myself, but I'm tired of younger generations being dumped upon in the comment sections. We are all products of the culture, economics, and technology into which we were born.
These trucks are amazing. Back in early 90s my good friend had five Toyota trucks from the 80s he sold firewood for a living some of them even had dual wheels . He work those poor trucks to death. The only problem was the frames would break from being overloaded and timing chains.
Nice truck! I live in WA state, and it's really unusual to see an old car without rust! Excellent find! Thank you for taking us with you on the refurbishing! Very interesting!
According to the seller, the truck had only been in Washington for less than a year. The previous 31 years were in California, so that explains why it's so clean!
You can use that old gear oil as bar lube in your chain saw! Kinda smells weird though!! But it's ALLOT cheaper (since you're throwing it away)!! STAY WARM!!!
Back in 91 my roomate had the same truck. It came from Arizona so also rust free. I used to trade vehicles with her because I loved that truck. Very nice truck.
That truck was a garage QUEEN and NEVER taken off road !!!! That is the only rare thing here> But, very well done video and I liked it very much, Thanks Only owner of a 1985 SR5 X-Cab 4X4 22REC Straight Axle, Rust bucket Bought NEW with 5 miles on it !!!!
The turbo may not be typical, but a one owner, rust free Toyota pickup is actually pretty common out here in Oregon / Washington. Not a dime a dozen, but you do see them pop up here and there. Now PLEASE keep it out of the salt!!
Nice, did u drive it from Washington? that would have been fun! Fluids looked good in running gear but best that u change em all then u know! Im digging your music in there too very chill...
That is a beauty of a car. I owned an 86 xtraCab in Lawrence, KS, from 86 through 92 when I brought it to Costa Rica. I would still had it had it not been for a friend wrecked it in 2001. Awesome cars those toyotas from the 1980s.
That’s a beautiful truck, mate. You know what you have, and I’m stoked for you. You could drive it another 250K before worrying about replacing much other than, well, that Turbo. Enjoy every mile and smile! 🤘🏼⚡️🤘🏼
Nothing cooler than a car from the 80s with a turbo? Yeah, back when manufacturers didn't know how to make them last.

Yeah!!! those dummies!! have you ever heard of a dodge omni glhs? look it up so very slow!! 13 sec.4 banger that did business with grand nationals/t types why do people think this shit just started last year or whenever fast and foolish was made??
Firstly, what makes you think the turbo is the original one? Secondly it is common knowledge turbos from that era didn't last and contributed to early engine death as well. (Lastly it is "then" and not "than".
I just found one of these for sale, my stepdad had an 85 and it was a beast, it could fit 31" tires stock and we used to outclimb alt of jeeps and huge trucks out at the trails, its small and can fit through dense brush trails unlike big trucks, his was non-turbo. Great find , they are tough little trucks, delete that pcv valve and put an oil catch can on that bad boy.
Instead of spending unnecessary time with multiple fluids by a GL-4/5 rated gear oil that's 75W-90 weight and you'll never have an issue with the drivetrain. Will also be much simpler for fluid purchasing and storage.
very nice truck i'm a toyota man and have only owned toyotas all my life i have the very same truck only it's in blue and was a one owner too i got mine out of arizona about 4 years ago, i also have 7 other toyota trucks i just got a 1979 with only 4700 miles but i paid more then i wanted too at 9000 dollars but is a beauty for sure i have another 1983 1983 1986 toyota truck that i have fixed up and painted over the years and when my twin boys got their driver license we got them two 1981 toyota square box 2 wheel drive and they both still have them till this day and are still in mint condistion, thanks for sharing and look forward to seeing more videos

Don't forget to flush the cooling system and replace with appropriate quantity of antifreeze & water. Nice Find! Beautiful Toyota Truck! Congratulations! Thanks for sharing. Lucky You. PEACE!
It seems like that old mini rig is in good hands now. The oil leak is probably from the front main seal. I had to change the one on my 1989 Toyota. Lots of stuff to take off but a cheap do it yourself task.
Finn The Human There are a lot of people out there that save for their first car for years. Just because you or others you know had things handed to them it doesn’t mean everyone does to
VinylToVideo First cars are supposed to be reliable and cheap as possible, American trucks are the opposite. Toyota is a far better brand than these American companies combined.
I remember when my parents test drove these brand new. My Dad said the turbo version made the truck driveable. The N/A version wouldn't get out of its own way.
Nice dude. I have a 1989 toyota hilux 22ret turbo myself. Factory front straight axle and factory 3.5" lift. My model is very rare aswell. Ran the vin and there were only 600 ever made of this type and was built specifically for the russian military in a left hand dive. It is in near perfect condition an i still refuse to wheel it. Ive had many people offer me an insane amount of money for it...turns out i bought it from the 1st original owner. Hardly drive it because it only has 72k original miles! Its a factory dark blue color with black interior. And i only paid $3700 for it cash!
I'll take a Port & Polished head with oversized SS Valves, mild Crank and a 36/36Weber Carb over a Turbo any day. Frankly my Stock carb with a P'nPolished head and mild performance crank would out perform your Turbo.
Used to have a super clean silver 86 turbo about 10 years ago. Ran like clockwork and never let me down, but you could watch the fuel gauge drop as you drove, boost or not. My V-8 Tahoe is more comfortable and gets better mileage.
Congrats!! Awesome find. I searched for nearly 6 months to find a first gen 4runner in all original condition and I know how hard they are to find. Nice first gen tacoma too :)
I really like how well your videos are done. Would be nice to have little more detail on the process of bleeding brakes and clutch slave cylinder. Also the tools used etc. 😀
I can tell that it is a 1986 by the weld on the rear axle housing. I bought a 1985 Toyota truck brand new, and at about 26k miles my rear axle housing cracked. Took it to Toyota 3 different times, they would not acknowledge that it was a defect. Surprise, surprise, I noticed that the rear housing was redesigned for all the 1986 trucks!!! As I recall, the turbo was only available in 1985 and 86.
1985-88 in the US market. 1985 saw mostly 2WD trunks in turbo, very few 4WD were shipped. Most turbos are 1986. 1987 saw hefty increases in price and a coming V6 so sales of the turbo slowed. Very few 1988 were turbo, and they introduced the 3.0 v6. Prices for 88 also went up, in fact prices were going up 1500 each year during this time. Which is a hefty increase considering the 12,000 window sticker.
Nice find! The PNW and Washington State in particular seems to have all the unique and cool older cars. After having lived in Kansas for three years, and buying a few rusty "projects", I can safely say that unless it's a smoking deal, I'll be looking out of state for future projects.
Nice truck and video. There is a Lucas gear oil that is gl4 and 5 compatible and not very expensive. It’s an 80w 90 though. I use it in my ‘86 Ranger, Toyo Koygo transmission. Maybe that could have worked? 75 bucks is a lot just for oil.
Very cool, I almost have the same truck, 1986 22r manual 4x4 non turbo reg cab with about 200K on it, it doesn't leak oil, but has a really hard time passing CA emissions, prob will need an engine rebuild soon, parts amazingly OEM are kinda pricey and hard to find new
To be honest but not knit-picking or finding fault, Those original hose clamps are far superior to your replacement clamps due to the fact that when tightened, the new clamps will tend to pinch the hose at the point where the pinion and screw (?) tighten the clamp and can and often do, cause a leak. And we are know, if we tried to save a few bucks and purchased inferior quality of these type of clamps, as soon as the clamp actually start to get tight, just before it actually does, it puts too much pressure on things and strips out and gives no clamping force at all. While with the original clamps give an even amount of clamping force around the entire circumference of the clamp to hose and give s a reliable seal. Other than that a very well done and informative video and I never envy anyone for anything if possible, but 4 years ago bought a 1988 toy p/u w/2.4L, carb'd 4 speed manual tranny 2 wd,that for having 220,000+ miles and 30 years old goes like a bat out of hell. But the one thing I do wish it had is a turbo. But then I probably would not get the 25-30 mpg im getting, which is damn good for one of these, especially since, can't seem to keep my foot out of it. Keep up the good work on the videos.
I had an 86 4Runner. Red with brown and tan interior. However it was an automatic :/. Poor engine went out. But what also contributed to that was maybe the 33 inch tires lol anyways enjoy your truck.
Hooo boy this video took off out of nowhere. Sorry everyone, but the truck was sold back in 2018 before anyone found this video and cared.

Engine needs an overhaul
a PCV valve being stuck closed is pretty rare
good to start with the easy stuff first...
@@jesset489 You're 100% right
@@Terminxman no he's not
@@jesset489 if you look closely you will see that the pcv valve hose feeds directly into the manifold on this truck and the oil was produced from a different hose further forward of the pcv valve but also on the valve cover, that is the hose which connects to the flexible intake hose.
The holy grail would be the 1985 fuel injected solid front axle.
A clean toyota won't stay around long unless you really like truck n style for what it is. Someone that wants it bad enough will buy it hands down!
Going up in Value, a mint one is selling for $30,000 now.
Holy crap it looks almost brand new! No way it has so many miles
Some of us “kids” still go to junkyards.
You've been alive this long and didn't know that "fat butt" shouldn't have been capitalized.
Go kill some more babies, soldier.
1986 turbo pickups were rare when they were new. They’re even harder to find now
These trucks are amazing.
Eastern WA=0 Rust
Lindsay is going to be pissed when she finds out where her missing tupperware went. lol. Great Video man!
Thanks, man. This was helpful and entertaining as well; I dug the thorough explanations accompanied by groovy time-lapses.
Diff and transmission fluids were in pretty good shape.
You can use that old gear oil as bar lube in your chain saw! Kinda smells weird though!! But it's ALLOT cheaper (since you're throwing it away)!! STAY WARM!!!
Nothing beats an old cars engine bay where everything is easy to reach.
Back in 91 my roomate had the same truck. It came from Arizona so also rust free. I used to trade vehicles with her because I loved that truck.
Very nice truck.
That truck was a garage QUEEN and NEVER taken off road !!!! That is the only rare thing here>
But, very well done video and I liked it very much, Thanks
Only owner of a 1985 SR5 X-Cab 4X4 22REC Straight Axle, Rust bucket Bought NEW with 5 miles on it !!!!
Im digging your music in there too very chill...
the right person got this truck.. nice buy man
That is a beauty of a car. I owned an 86 xtraCab in Lawrence, KS, from 86 through 92 when I brought it to Costa Rica. I would still had it had it not been for a friend wrecked it in 2001. Awesome cars those toyotas from the 1980s.
My 2020 TRD Off Road Taco in Quicksand is like a retro version of this Yota’s color.
(Lastly it is "then" and not "than".
ford still doesn't. eco-boost =very problematic
This was for sale like 10 minutes from my house! How crazy! Good looking truck!
260k miles in candyland!!! That truck is pristine!
Very well looked after truck and much better looking than modern equivalents. It was likely in a garage most of its life judging by the paintwork.
Got yourself a real gem there. Gets the gears turning in my head with ideas for all the stuff id do if i owned it.
Instead of spending unnecessary time with multiple fluids by a GL-4/5 rated gear oil that's 75W-90 weight and you'll never have an issue with the drivetrain. Will also be much simpler for fluid purchasing and storage.
Nice score man I bought a 97 land cruiser triple locked supercharged rust free sight unseen as well, and I like you scored.
I had one of these with the custom 'crew cab' insert between the front seats and rear bed. It was a great truck.
very nice truck i'm a toyota man and have only owned toyotas all my life i have the very same truck only it's in blue and was a one owner too i got mine out of arizona about 4 years ago, i also have 7 other toyota trucks i just got a 1979 with only 4700 miles but i paid more then i wanted too at 9000 dollars but is a beauty for sure i have another 1983 1983 1986 toyota truck that i have fixed up and painted over the years and when my twin boys got their driver license we got them two 1981 toyota square box 2 wheel drive and they both still have them till this day and are still in mint condistion, thanks for sharing and look forward to seeing more videos
My 1987 Mazda pick-up has no cracks on dash. I'm plum proud of it.
I figured out my mom had one of these in the 90s and I was upset because she sold it😩
Those trucks are unstoppable 😭 I want one
Watching your video, I randomly saw in the bottom suggestions from another video I was watching. And thoroughly enjoying it, said to myself "who is this guy, I need to subscribe to this". Couldn't believe you only have just over 4k subs, your production quality and persona on camera is very good and I'm surprised there isn't more 00's to your sub count. Add one more here, I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Oh man thank you so much for posting your video. I didn't know what that smell was . it was annoying I changed the pcv valve n cleaned the pipe n way better that smell went away n change filter . It was disgusting. Thanks
Don't forget to flush the cooling system and replace
with appropriate quantity of
antifreeze & water. Nice Find!
Beautiful Toyota Truck! Congratulations! Thanks for
sharing. Lucky You. PEACE!
It seems like that old mini rig is in good hands now. The oil leak is probably from the front main seal. I had to change the one on my 1989 Toyota. Lots of stuff to take off but a cheap do it yourself task.
Such an awesome truck you found. Hope you keep it as original as possible. Can’t wait to see this series.
My thoughts exactly.
This guy needs more subs
That truck is unbelievable. Congratulations. Score!!!😁👍
im 16, and just bought my first truck. its a 1992 Toyota pickup 4x4
Exo Rev how much $
its gonna spoil ya. get ready for your next one costing you
Shame on you. Buy American next time.
You are the American version of Ed China (Wheeler Dealer)! Just found your channel. Great stuff!
Wow what a trip down memory lane. Had two of these Hilux variants. Thank you my youthful grin!
can't believe how clean this thing is underneath. Jealous , from Canada :)
I remember when my parents test drove these brand new. My Dad said the turbo version made the truck driveable. The N/A version wouldn't get out of its own way.
I have a 1991 in great shape thanks for sharing
I drive mine a lot to 308.764 at this time
After you have replaced the PCV valve, if there is a ton of pressure coming from the crankcase, it is a sure sign that the rings are bad.
"Factory" 3.5" lift?
Dick head.
Used to have a super clean silver 86 turbo about 10 years ago.
Ran like clockwork and never let me down, but you could watch the fuel gauge drop as you drove, boost or not. My V-8 Tahoe is more comfortable and gets better mileage.
Wow man that trcuk is in impeccable condition! I have a 1990 4x4 can relate to all the maintenance but wow what a find!
Congrats!! Awesome find. I searched for nearly 6 months to find a first gen 4runner in all original condition and I know how hard they are to find. Nice first gen tacoma too :)
I always dreamed of lowering my 89 and putting a turbo on it i dont know why but this video just makes me want to do it even more
Nice truck I had a 85 carb sr5 and a 86 efi sr5 loved them both long lasting trucks lots of Fun to drive
Washington state is the epicenter for cool old cars.
i knew a guy who had one back around '88. he loved and hated it, he got it new but was on his 3rd turbo at the time.
Great little truck good find
I came for the cool ass truck, but I left to find out about the background music. Going through this composer's stuff on spotify is a trip lol.
PCV oil leak can also manifest in places as it caked/burns. I had a 22-R pickup fail emissions which was resolved by chiseling out oil cake.
Get some Aerospace 303 on all that rubber weatherstripping. It will just help preserve it further. It will keep the dash protected too.
wow, I once owned an 1980 Toyota (4wd) prior to the independent front end yotas. "liked" and "subscribed"
What a fucking gem man your lucky and you own a 300zx omg dude that's still a dream car of mine
Very cool, I almost have the same truck, 1986 22r manual 4x4 non turbo reg cab with about 200K on it, it doesn't leak oil, but has a really hard time passing CA emissions, prob will need an engine rebuild soon, parts amazingly OEM are kinda pricey and hard to find new
Jealous of your find! Congrats and enjoy that thing!
This truck needs those 3 color 70's stripes along its body. Then it would look perfect!!
Excellent job my friend and hello from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
You found a unicorn. I owned an 85 4x4 5spd. I miss that truck..It was the same color NA with a small lift and camper of the same color.
Im about to buy one...not sure if i can do the work you did well done!
What a beautiful truck! I would love to have this next to my 1990 Corolla with 72k miles!
You should consider getting your truck bed rhino lined. what a great finishing touch that would be.
I had an 86 4Runner. Red with brown and tan interior. However it was an automatic :/. Poor engine went out. But what also contributed to that was maybe the 33 inch tires lol anyways enjoy your truck.
You scored with that truck... Those were great trucks...!!
