So glad! Most issues people have has less to do with actual editing and more to do with slow system speeds, so if these can help speed that up then this video accomplished its goal!!! :)
I believe a quicker way to accomplish Tip #1 is Playback -> Timeline Proxy Mode -> Half or Quarter. A Frame.io article says, "Resolve’s Proxy mode temporarily reduces the processed resolution of an entire timeline, but without impacting the actual assets or sequence settings. It’s like changing the timeline resolution within Project Settings from UHD to HD while working (edit, color grading, etc.) and then switching back to UHD before final output. All your assets and effects are still UHD data, they’re just being processed as if they were HD during playback." An additional benefit is you don't have to remember to change your resolution back if you use Timeline Proxy Mode! Thanks for the tips! I didn't know much about the 2nd tip, looks useful.
Cool man! Let me check into it and see how it compares! Id love for it to be as easy as change timeline proxy mode to half. In the past it hasnt helped much, but maybe I missed something or havent given it a chance. Has it worked for you?
@@BillyRybka For me it seems to help, in addition to creating proxies. I create half res proxies for 4k footage (so 1080 proxies), and once I've edited awhile, if it becomes sluggish, I set Timeline Proxy Mode to quarter (still looks pretty sharp). It all may depend on the type of footage/computer as to how much each method helps. Thanks again for your tips and videos!
Yes. I use this for 6K Braw on my M1 Mac. I edit on a 4K timeline, but set the Playback Proxy to Half, and the viewer looks super sharp still (frankly can’t really tell any difference), and the editing is like butter even after adding effects and grade. I never have to worry about setting the timeline resolution back to 4K, as I never have to touch it.
I have a 4 year experience in DaVinci Resolve, and the render in place trick helped me a LOT!! Thank You A LOT Fish!!! I was joking sorry if you didn't liked it. But, those tricks were awesome!!

Great tips! Although I found with an edit last week that I reduced to half the resolution whilst editing (your first tip), it messed up a fusion composition. Either the mask or top layer was in the wrong position.
@@BillyRybka I had an edit I was working on at half the resolution, your first recommendation. In one clip of the edit I had stock footage of a girl dancing on a rooftop that I'd composited in Fusion, but with a mask to cover her feet where the edge of the building was. Then when I switched back to full 4K resolution at the same aspect ratio, I couldn't see the girl anymore. So I had to realign the footage and mask to have the girl appear again.
Great tricks Billy! I'm curious, what's the difference between creating proxies or generate optimized media. I've been using the second one and has helped me a lot, but maybe proxies are way better :)
Jeez, thank you for this render in place protip. For some reason optimized media does nothing on my pc, even when I choose the worst settings. Literally a time saver
THIS WILL HELP ME SO MUCH!! I would love to sometimes have 3+ clips shown next to each other but my System reaaallly hates playing multiple clips at once.. Thank you sooo much for this short Video!! Also amazing Job! You're not annoying with the asking for a like or subscription, actually I even enjoyed these parts. You have a very good balance in your Videos! Love it!
I’ve been downloading my favorite movies in 1920 by 1080 to use in 30 seconds to 1 minute videos I like to edit to the beat with the music I like and I have to place hundreds of scenes in that 30 secs to 1 minute video. Moreover I change 1920by1080 to 1080by1920 because I’m uploading them on Instagram reels. It’s too much cutting and splitting of clips and arranging them in groups and shit. One thing that’s really making difference in speeding up is CTRL+B to cut instead of using mouse but since I’m cutting all the time
haha I dont actually use them much! I tried but It didnt seem to be helpful with my current workflow. Its helpful when I've done weddings or events though!
Thank you for the tips. I'm trying out Davinci Resolve and I'm still trying to see if it's the best editing software for me, so these tips are greatly appreciated -^_^- I'm so glad I subbed to you.
I'm already subscribed but I'm only understanding about 10% of this. It's not you, it's me 😅🤣🤣 yesterday evening I started editing my very first video EVER, I finished at 10:30 this morning lol. It ended up being an 8-minute video with a tiny animation with a green screen I had to remove (first time also) and embedding still images over a portion of the video, the actual footage of me speaking, plus slides and voiceover in another part, the lovey song I faded so good at the beginning and end, the intro and outro all done by me and I'm not a designer. I even ended up normalizing the audio, so glad I did! Simple to do and a huge difference. So, I'll have to rewatch this video multiple times to get familiar with this. I'm just getting started at editing and DaVinci is my first real editor. Microsoft video editor, Kapwing, and those can do the trick for super basic stuff, but it's like kindergarten vs. university (DaVinci) so I feel like a rocket scientist lol. Thank you.
What are the differences between optimized media and proxy Media and which is better? I know that you can move proxies, i just mean the differences in storage and performance
I have a problem with DaVinci if I install a newer version it gives me an error code “error 59” and the only fix that I know is to either go back to 16.2 or install a really old geoforce driver which makes me pc slow so any fixes for error code 59 please say!
hi, great video! i have a question in making proxy for 1.8x anamorphic footage or any anamorphic i guess. after making a proxy i cant seem to destretch the proxied anamorphic clip, but when i turn off proxy, the original is destretched, how can i resolve this? ;) thanks! using resolve 17
Hey Billy, thanks for these tricks! Quick question, are you only recommending to downsize your footage from 4k to 1080p while editing? I record and edit in 1080p so should I edit in 720p? Thanks
Hi Billy, question? If I do the render in place, does it matter if it is done with the downscaled timeline or should it be done with the original resolution timeline? So if I have 4K project, I first do the downscaling in the settings to 1080p and render in place, and afterwards before final render I change it back, will it use the downscaled 1080 file or the original??? Hope you understand what I mean.
Is the Proxy method better than the method you showed where you go to "Media Management" and transcode your clips? I mean obviously you dont have as much options but it is faster and you dont have the hustle with relinking media manually
Do I click on every video clip in the media pool to create proxies or just one and it'll be enough for the whole system to be adjusted to proxies? I'm new to this. Thanks.
Hi from Spain Billy! Thanks for sharing this advices for us beginners, it’s a big help! Could i ask you a doubt i have, please? So i film with both, a Sony A7C (4K 30/25/24 fps///1080p 120/100/60/50/30/25/24fps) and a Mavic Mini (2’7K 30 fps/// 1080p 60/30 fps). Could you tell me how should i manage it to create a video in DaVinci by importing clips such those from different cameras, with different resolutions and frame rates, please. I’m quite lost and desperate... Thanks a lot in advance!!!
Well you will never use the optimized media for rendering. Davinci will automatically switch from optimized media to your original source clips so that you are getting the max quality. Optimized media is proxies but just in cache form.
Hi, I follow your content for that exact reason - to learn how to edit faster and with less pain. In that particular case I might be able to help you for a change. Please bear with me. First of all, I am not a professional editor. I use video to show others stuff I do. That's why I use the free version of DaVinci - so: less hardware acceleration to begin with - and I edit 4k video on an aged notebook. So believe me, I tried everything on your list to speed up the process... and way more. The most effective thing for me is using proxy media. But NOT the one DaVinci creates. Because for some diabolic reason, the developers decided to block the whole user interface, while the proxy media is being generated. Being a software architect myself, this causes me physical pain everytime I see it. So here is what I do: I wrote a program to automate some stuff. One of them being, creation of proxy files that are compatible with Resolve. Then I use a timeline with the intended final resolution and point Resolve to my proxy files. When exporting, Resolve automatically switches to the real footage. Combining that with "Smart Render Cache" (for Fusion effects), even my old rig here can do 4k. If you are interested, let me know. I could send you a copy of the app.
@Billy Rybka Hey i have question with respect to proxy is there short key through which we can create proxy media cause the current work flow is right click on the footage then click Generate Proxy media on Version 17.2
Id go for DNx still, mainly because its a codec for Davinci resolve. You can try ProRes and see how it works. It may be better. I dont have a mac to test it on.
Great video. I am on Free Version 16. I do not see a Render in Place. Did that start in v17? What is the keyboard short cut to copy and add an audio music track with one click? I found it a while ago and now I cannot remember. It is the greatest short cut. Do you use the Studio version? Do you use the Speed Editor?
Render in place is for Davinci Resolve 17, Its out of beta so pick up the new Davinci Resolve 17 free version! Its a lot faster and more stable! It also uses the same system resources as resolve 16 so there isnt a change there. I am going to be doing a video next week about Davinci Resolve shortcuts ;) It may be Ctrl c to copy and then Alt V to paste attributes to a clip. Idk if our shortcuts are the same. I have been building my own custom ones for a year now so hopefully that helps!
@@BillyRybka Actually I finally found the fast way to replicate an audio clip. Just use the selector cursor and select the clip you want to replicate, hold Alt and then drag the curser to your desired location. Do you use the Cut Page? Do you use the Speed Editor or do you feel like you don't really need it? Also I would love to see a video on using the Close Up tool in the Cut Page. I have tried it but I cannot seem to get the framing of the zoom to work the way I want and then the framing is messed up when the clip that was created by using the Close Up button is finished.
Quick question, before exporting, do we need to uncheck the "generate optimize media/proxy" for the best quality ? Or is it just a timeline thing? And also I have noticed if we check use render previews while exporting, the exported footage is actually like the low quality timeline footage.
HELLO BROTHER....I SEARCHING FOR 1 WEEK....What is the best codec settings for best quality in Render ?? and also the quick time or h264 which are the best for quality ??? I dont know anything about Dnxhr or other codec..,.Can you please make a video about Best quality export settings in resolve and explain about codec and all thing.... And Thank you for the video..
Billy, in After Effects - one can animate start, the end point and offset of a mask stroke...I can't seem to find a way to do it in Davinci. In order to animate these strokes in Fusion it seems I'm only limited to length and position key frame in the inspector tab. How would you do it?
You probably won’t reply. But, what do I do if I have a lot of media. It will probably slow down my editing if I have to turn them all into proxy media
Well if you have a lot of high quality media you will want to make it proxies, otherwise you will spend more time waiting and lagging than you would have if you just rendered the proxies. Normally if you have a bunch of high quality media that puts strain on your system you would render the proxies all over night so that way in the morning its all good to go. What specs do you have in your computer?
That really will right! Every one of these videos are scripted. I leave enough room for me to joke around, but I will start talking about something random if I didnt lol
@@NickTimmer When you render a proxy, the audio usually comes a separate clip(s) which you can then drop in. Or, just if you create a proxy, just drag/ copy the original audio and put it underneath in the timeline.
For no reason at all Davinci started to slow down a ton. I decided to get more RAM because i had 8. I now have 16 and still get choppy playback and slow editing. My gpu and cpu usage is average when i open the task manager so i have no idea what's going on. The tips worked to an extent and i liked the video, but if you know how to solve this please help.
Is that the resolution you want to export at? I record my videos in c4k which is 4096 x 2160 but I export in 3840x2160. The 4096 x 2160 gives me a bit more reosltuon to work with
@@BillyRybka I have a 21:9 ultrawide monitor, so when importing game footage things can be a little more tricky when a 16:9 is assumed by the software or by tutorial videos. I haven't learned all of the quirks and fixes just yet as I haven't used the software consistently enough.
Hey Billy, Do you ever get a prompt when importing footage that says the clip and timeline have different FPS, and either change or keep? What would you choose there? Thanks for the tips here...
Hey do you think you could show us how to do something like this czcams.com/video/Ux8W6XctUMQ/video.html in fusion? I don't even know where to begin so it would be cool to see a fusion equivalent shown! I appreciate your vids man!
What do you mean? Are the subtitles off? I threw it in descript and had it auto transcribe for me. Then I put it in youtube, so it didn't take long at all. Only a few minutes :)
@@BillyRybka No haha I was referring to your edit where you placed text of each word you said for some sentences. Writing a whole phrase together would save time (but be less impactful) - it was a joke of course.
Can we add a qualifier to your video… Like if you happen to have the Mac Pro with the fastest SSD drives money can buy, you can ignore this video completely. Also… If you’re using 8 bit your color correcting could start breaking up… I never wanna color correct with anything less than 10 bit. . So your video needed to open up with… If you have a mediocre system this is what you can do. Nah, just giving you a hard time.

Quick question, before exporting, do we need to uncheck the "generate optimize media/proxy" for the best quality ? Or is it just a timeline thing? And also I have noticed if we check use render previews while exporting, the exported footage is actually like the low quality timeline footage.
Is there a way to render videos faster?
Check out the section on render in place, its the second trick. It will speed up your rendering time if you have data heavy clips
@@BillyRybka awesome
Thankyou
HELLO BROTHER....I SEARCHING FOR 1 WEEK....What is the best codec settings for best quality in Render ?? and also the quick time or h264 which are the best for quality ??? I dont know anything about Dnxhr or other codec..,.Can you please make a video about Best quality export settings in resolve and explain about codec and all thing....
And Thank you for the video..
What is I render in 1920x1080
Doing it overnight, that’s genius!
My Specs:
Core i7-9700
RTX 2070
16GB RAM
But my motherboard is bad (long story)
What is the name of the font you used in the video?
Gotham
Have a script before you start recording. This will really speed up your editing.
That really will right! Every one of these videos are scripted. I leave enough room for me to joke around, but I will start talking about something random if I didnt lol
YOOO FIRST. Nice videos man. Good job
Thanks so much!!!!
I tried proxy media once and had no audio.
You arent supposed to add in your audio. Dont render your audio as proxy, there is no output for it. Instead just render the video.
@@BillyRybka I need the audio to edit the video. So how to have audio and proxy media?
@@NickTimmer When you render a proxy, the audio usually comes a separate clip(s) which you can then drop in. Or, just if you create a proxy, just drag/ copy the original audio and put it underneath in the timeline.
It's definitely faster at Start up
Yes sir!
Well minimum ram for Davinci is 16gb and the gpu is minimum 2gb
I have choppy playback with GTX 780 3GB but with 6600 XT 8GB I have smooth playback.
Win10
i7-4770K CPU
32GB RAM
and if the footage is 3440x1440?
Is that the resolution you want to export at? I record my videos in c4k which is 4096 x 2160 but I export in 3840x2160. The 4096 x 2160 gives me a bit more reosltuon to work with
@@BillyRybka I have a 21:9 ultrawide monitor, so when importing game footage things can be a little more tricky when a 16:9 is assumed by the software or by tutorial videos. I haven't learned all of the quirks and fixes just yet as I haven't used the software consistently enough.
Hey Billy what's DNXLB
Its a codec that davinci resolve can read easier. I explain it in the video.
@@BillyRybka LB lower bandwidth
Hey Billy,
Do you ever get a prompt when importing footage that says the clip and timeline have different FPS, and either change or keep? What would you choose there?
Thanks for the tips here...
I'd leave it at 24fps which is the default. You can always change it later. But I generally select keep
DAT ODD FUTURE SHIRT
been loosing my mind. can't for the life of me figure out how to create the Spiderverse glitch effect using DaVinci.
Hey do you think you could show us how to do something like this czcams.com/video/Ux8W6XctUMQ/video.html in fusion? I don't even know where to begin so it would be cool to see a fusion equivalent shown! I appreciate your vids man!
Tip for Billy to speed things up: Don't subtitle one word at a time 😂
What do you mean? Are the subtitles off? I threw it in descript and had it auto transcribe for me. Then I put it in youtube, so it didn't take long at all. Only a few minutes :)
@@BillyRybka Could you make a tutorial on how to quickly make subtitles?
@@BillyRybka No haha I was referring to your edit where you placed text of each word you said for some sentences. Writing a whole phrase together would save time (but be less impactful) - it was a joke of course.
odd future wolf gangg
Where are you from?
New york, my family is from Poland tho
@@BillyRybka cool, thanks, i was wondering because of the surname, im actually from czech rep😂😂
Does Davici resolve give virus?
No lol
Is that a only fans t-shirt it say of on it ,or am I just tripping .
Haha its not, it's a zoo york shirt!
