The idea behind the project is to collaborate online to record these covers.
Although some good friends of mine form the core of the project, the band won't necessarily be the same for every song. We will have guests from around the world participating, mostly on vocals though, at our discretion.
How does it work?
Each guy in the band records their parts (audio tracks and video) at home or at a local studio and sends them to me.
I then put the audio together and mix it. This has been a great exercise for me (mixing). I learn the concept behind the sound of my favorite albums and try a whole bunch of cool techniques attempting to replicate it closely.
I AB my mix with the original song but don't get too crazy about it. It's difficult to get the sound exactly right due to a number of variables. When I get it close enough I stop comparing the two and just get it to sound good (hopefully) from there.
When the final stereo audio track is done I take it to a video editing software and sync everyone's videos to it. After a bit of editing and level/color correction it's ready for CZcams. :)

As the producer of the Split-Screen Covers project, I'd like to add a piece of inside information to this discussion. I'm sure you all know this was a "release as fast as we can" type collab. Check the date we released it. We recorded it in under a week from the official Dream Theater release, and Paco Barillà had to be the first to record his parts, because we use the drums as foundation for the rest. He actually sent in all his tracks 2 days after the release of the song. Think about it..
It's amazing to see that these people are from all different parts of the world, speak different languages, and may have never met each other in person but can come together through the power of the internet... and DREAM THEATER

Every instrument and the singing in this is amazing. Cheers to the musicians! The singer always on key, the drummer never missing a beat, the bass player adding a groovy low-end, and the guitarist shredding just like Petrucci. Damn.

It's not with my age, people here just don't know how to rock, they are either Justin Bieber-kinda-guitarists, or classical music guitarists( which is fine, but...). I'm looking for a metal guitarist and probably someone with better vocals than me, but let's get real, I live in Hong Kong
***** The problem is that I use a TD-11 Vdrums, which the number of drums is really limited, I'm not sure if I can play songs like these with it. I maximized the number of drums and cymbals as much as possible, yet I still have a hard time playing some of these songs.

Frederik Weile you mean which drummer he's trying to interpret? Mike Mangini, but since these drum tracks were made only by the core DT members at the time, he's probably interpreting the drumming influence of Mike Portnoy in Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci. Mangini only played the tracks for this album, he didn't compose them.

Wrong again, drums came after all other things were composed. If you haven't watched enough interviews from Mangini to understand that he had a lot of freedom with the drums (but coudn't and as he said, "wouldn't" touch the composition or arrangement at all) then go and find them before jumping to conclusions.Joseph Griffin
