The idea behind the project is to collaborate online to record these covers.
Although some good friends of mine form the core of the project, the band won't necessarily be the same for every song. We will have guests from around the world participating, mostly on vocals though, at our discretion.
How does it work?
Each guy in the band records their parts (audio tracks and video) at home or at a local studio and sends them to me.
I then put the audio together and mix it. This has been a great exercise for me (mixing). I learn the concept behind the sound of my favorite albums and try a whole bunch of cool techniques attempting to replicate it closely.
I AB my mix with the original song but don't get too crazy about it. It's difficult to get the sound exactly right due to a number of variables. When I get it close enough I stop comparing the two and just get it to sound good (hopefully) from there.
When the final stereo audio track is done I take it to a video editing software and sync everyone's videos to it. After a bit of editing and level/color correction it's ready for CZcams. :)

We all learned our parts by ear. That's the only way we're able to release it this fast. Paulinho actually recorded his drum parts less than 24h after the original song was out, since drums are the foundation for all others to record over. What takes longer is actually mixing, editing, post-production. Just playing the song 1-2 days would be enough, but instead we needed 8 for the whole thing, especially since life gets in the way. :) Thanks!
The drummer is ridiculously good.
Yup
NickMorrisDrums oh yeah!!
Release.. August 5, 2013

Oh, my.. ! You guys r so awesome!!!
SUNGWOO PARK daaaaaaaaaaanggggggg
Dream Theater played a clip of this during their intermission when I saw them last Thursday!
Yeah, they've been doing so since the start of this tour! Pretty cool! :)
That must be an honor.

Absoulutly incredable, gonna share it on facebook!

Absolutely incredible. Even more fun to listen to when we don't have to hear LaBrie.
In Rome, Italy, we say "Ve la comandate", something like "You rule!". Really fantastic, a great job!
Anche a macerata
What a drummer!
Love the drumming! so fresh!
Holy crap what a great cover. That guitar tone is so freaking close to john's.
Astonishing. How just the 4 instrumental and the (great) singing parts are sounding this huge is the main accomplishment here IMHO
your snare is better than mangini kk
Any 5 dollar chinese pawn shop snare sounds better than Manginis snare on that album
Melhor banda cover de Dream Theater que eu já vi!!!!
Concordo mano!
The sound of the drums here is so much more satisfying than in the original.
The drums is amazing, his power, his... sensation that he pass for us, is amazing! the keyboard too, fantastic!
Too many extraordinary musicans out there. I did a DT-Medley with keys and vocals myself on youtube but this guys are just beyond...
I like the guitar tone in this better than the album's. Has a little aggressiveness to it and doesn't have that mid-spike that the illuminators have.
The best Dream Theater cover band on youtube ever....Love from Nepal!
The drummer is amazing!
precision cover. You guys nailed it to the millisecond!
Wwwwwooooooowwww.
I am speechless!
A tip: you can watch series at flixzone. I've been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Lincoln Amari Definitely, been using flixzone} for months myself :)
@Lincoln Amari yup, have been watching on flixzone} for years myself :)
I just love that agressive MM Bongo-tone. It sits in prog/metal-mix so perfectly!
Paulinho - making playing hyper complicated drum parts easy like it's a piece of cake
You should do The Glass Prison from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
Fuck that, the hole Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Son espectaculares ... Suena más potente incluso que los mismísimos dream theater, excelente cover. Saludos !
That solo.... 10/10! Amazing cover!
From one drummer to another, you are a legend sir. Every aspect of your playing is GREAT
AMAZING. This is what DT would sound like if MP was back. Way cooler than the robotic playing of Mangini. You guys are BEASTS. congrats
Very nice cover. I think your singer sings more in pitch than the DT singer.(which is good)
Now I'm going to "bash" your mix, you don't have to read, and please, take it with a pinch of salt. I will try to point out elements of the production that I think could be done better, the goal is a constructive criticism. I liked the cover! So here comes the critique on the mix:
Guitars:
Double tracking sounds a little bit muddy at some points in the song, less than optimal interplay with the bass guitar+kick, especially on the staccatos and palm mutings.
Vocals:
(you've heard this before) The vocalist could be more in front in some parts of the song, others he's just right, you use volume automation, yes?.
Keyboard:
Way too much in the background, I can barely hear it in parts, and some other parts It is just perfect. Where you can hear it properly, it is perfect.
Drums:
the drums all occupy the precious center channel, when (in my book) only the snare and kick should be allowed in. By having the cymbals so centered you phase out some of them if they are stereo mic'ed. also the drums sound much more unnatural when they are so focused in the center, I'm used to listening to the ride, hihat and toms spread more out across the stereo field, this centering gives the impression of a 96k mp3 file.
But still, there is some stereo spread there. I can hear it. But his main rides/crashes are too centered for my tastes.
Bass:
Could use more compression, Varying bass levels competes too much with the kick drum, it also does not seem to have its own space in the mix, it jumps out at me from time to time. Also for fun, try paralleling it with extremely band limited distortion (see Ola Englunds bass recording tutorial)
OK. hope I'm not too strict on you here. My intention is to give constructive feedback. This has been a very critical review of your mix, telling you what I hear, and If you read it all, thank you for taking the time to read it.. Good work.
All great mixing tips my friend! Thx. At the time I thought the same of a few of those aspects you pointed out (shortly after the release). Today, they are even more evident to me. :) Back then we were hurrying these out just to be cool and make them fast! haha so yeah, having to do most of the work myself, it was taxing (and fun) on me. I remember this video specifically, my ears were so tired, from all the recording and mixing (we were doing Bad Salad EP at the time, and slipped this drum recording in at the end of a session), I just could not differentiate anything anymore (and underestimated the importance of this phenomenon on my judgement), and this mix suffered, consequently. We wanted to release it in like 5 days, and I was laboring on the mix, extending that deadline, and everyone waiting on me. :D Oh well, it was worth the challenge. Take it for what it is. Did you hear the other videos? I wonder what you'd think about each of them, cuz all were kinda "put'em out fast" challenges (not as intense as on this one), but I thought some of those mixes sounded pretty decent (I think Metropolis Part 1 and On The Backs of Angels had some cool well balanced ones). Anyway, let me know your thoughts if you ever check them out! Also did a live one of "MUSE cover" my band did a few weeks ago, which I posted on my channel. Cheers.
Congrats guys. Saw your video put up on Dream theater screen at Wembley Arena on Friday. They were showing the best renditions of their songs on CZcams and you were there. :)
The drummer is fire 🔥 he doesn’t miss anything & crazy smooth. Very Portnoy like.😎👍
John myung on keyboard???
kkkkk
That was soo funny, I forgot to laugh
I guess that makes this nightmare cinema
Racist much?? Lol...
o vocal ficou mais empolgante que o original! haha, parabens man, matou a pau, alias, toda a banda matou a pau!!
Absolutely amazing players.. especially drums and guitar. Waiting more from this crew.
great cover ! solid groove...
Would it be too much to ask for The Count of Tuscany?
Kneel before Talent
You guys are awesome! Great job
Awesome as always!
The drummer's tone is better than Mangini's.
Who is the Mangini?! ;) :)
So queria saber que é o idiota que dá "não gostei"???
Ficou foda.... Como sempre!!!!
Amazing guys! Great job!!
Unbelievable... everything spot on!
Are the guitar player and the bass player brothers or sth? they look very similar
We're brothers!
ThiagoCamposOfficial Oh and it was in the intro lol
Agus Gonzalez HAHAHAHAHA +ThiagosCamposOfficial
i thought both were same but before shaving bass shaved and played guitar lol
Might be a mix issue, but the vocals sound weak compared to the rest of the mix. Could just be a tone/delivery issue on his end though too...I will be the first to admit I LOVE Labrie's tone, and honestly this dude, just doesn't cut the mustard. Although he IS a very good singer.
It might be your speakers or something. The vocals sound really powerful on mine.
nah, I've tried in 3 different sets of headphones, computer speakers, and flat response monitors...all are the same.
interesting... don't what's wrong. It sounds pretty powerful through my spakers
Listening through my monitors in my studio, the voice could use a boost (2db maybe) to cut through the mix, since Denis's voice is "darker" than James's, but it's very well balanced with the instruments as it is.
Sounds a little quiet to me, too.
This is flippin awesome!
Excellent! Best DT cover band I've seen!
2:36 drummer is in playback!
Why? Maybe for "playback"? in italian it means that someone is pretending to singing or playing an instrument when in background there's another musical track. At that time, you can see that drummer doesn't hit cymbals that you can hear. Am i wrong?
Better than the original guys! Congrats!

yea your comment is seriously off-color
they re good but no better than dream God... girls
Okay, guys - my reply goes only to those of you who deserve to get an answer and I'm talking about those who are not swearing, like swearing will give any pluses to their response. I used to be a DT fan, used to go to as many concerts of them as I could but my personal opinion is that now days the only thing they are doing is repeating themselves . Music has nothing to gain anymore from this band. We are living in a free world and that's what I believe. I respect everyone's opinion and I EXPECT from everyone else to do the same. Well for those who swear and curse in their replies I must say I find it quite amusing to see 15 and 16 years old teenagers to practise their vocab so please...be my guest hahaha!!!
I'm a guitarist but I seriously love your drumming Paulinho! It's so fluid and relax, you just do it man!
CHAPEAU BAS! Marvelous job! You present great skills and unusual level of playing.
peter baelish on the bass?
Josh G kkkkk Maybe!
No disrespect to James or his fans but this vocalist sounds better IMO.
this guy is an awesome singer, but i like james's singing for this specific song
+Yogen Grg ANd the Drummer is better than Mike Portnoy too.
