- Remember when the Green Bay Packers beat the New England Patriots in SuperBowl 31? Bill Parcells vs Mike Holmgren? Bret Favre vs Drew Bledsoe? MVP Desmond Howard? the "Minister of Defense" Reggie White? Antonio Freeman? Curtis Martin? The opening was epic as R&B singer Luther Vandross brings the house down in New Orleans in 1997, sang the national anthem, and Miss Louisiana 1996 Erika Schwarz Wright performed sign language for the national anthem.
No one smoother with that #NationalAnthem, Vandross! • Luther Vandross SuperB...

I discussed this video and other #NationalAnthems on my show czcams.com/video/G3mjg_LIUYo/video.html
Luthur Vandross made that thing sound like a love song
Shanny Mack isn't it a love song? Love for one's country. (Though fergie took it too literally)
So true!!
Time to make some American babies!
Still much better than Marvin Gays perverted performance of the anthem
That boy was smooth.
Nothing like Luther and Whitney!
Marvin Gaye
Nothing at all..
I’m glad you mentioned both instead of one and not the other
And mariah
Marvin gaye
No runs. no rifts. So smooth void of forced effort. Just smooth. That's Luther Mr.Velvet.
Queen Empress there were a few but very nicely placed.
He was an r&b singer, of course there were runs lol. Nothin wrong with runs and rifts. There is just an art to it few can demonstrate with good measure and damn good sense.
What’s a run and rift
@@MichaelJ44 They are essentially the same thing. It when you take a note and kind of add a melody to just one syllable of the word. Look up Karen Clark Sheard, she does a lot of them.
Lol definitely runs and rifts in this performance, wouldn’t have been Luther without them. Still a very great rendition.
Came here after Fergie, I needed to refresh my head
I came here after Fergie but Marvin is the best.
Yes Lord 😊
Watch Marvin Gaye's
Mpule Mailula lmao shut up!!!!😂😂😂😭😭😭😭😂😂😭😂😭😂😭

Luther did a great job singing the National Anthem, but when Marvin Gaye sung it all the 1983 NBA All-Star game (at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California) America became pregnant on that unforgettable day.
It is important to notice that Luther just song the song with no attempt to put a spin on it. Luther knew his vocal prowess yet only did what was needed for a good performance.
Exactly!
Well said...that's the point exactly!!
What a badass Luther was!!! Miss him.... 🙏🏽
Whatchu mean? He totally changed it. He made it sound like a super 80's funky song. If you wanna hear someone who sang it correctly without changed listen to Whitney Houston an honorable and proud American
Sean Dearth
Whitney hit a HR but Luther hit a grand slam! This was to perfection as was everything he sang.
This how this is supposed to be sung!. Like an anthem, 100% pitch perfect. He IS a genious. He is one of the best vocalists of all time.
genius*
This is hands down one of the best renditions of the Star-Spangled Banner I’ve ever heard in my entire life!
agree but listen to Marvin Gaye's version..
Whitney was very patriotic and powerful but Luther's rendition is the most soulful. Two of the best interpretations ever.
Marvin Gaye’s was very soulful….
Whiteny oa better
@@angeeeang4645 My favorite!
He sung so calmly and unbothered! RIP Luther V.
He did though but he had such a naturally big voice no effort was needed every note sung by Luther was perfect pitch!
Wow!!!!! He definitely understood the assignment
I saw Luther and Anita Baker in concert together here in San Diego in the 1990's..Ohhhh what a night.
Natural, effortless, soulful, down-to-earth performance. What else could we ask for? Hands down one of the best renditions so far.
It looked like he wasn’t even trying he was that good RIP
A legend.
RIP Luther 🙏🏾
themezzy mahon Mr. Vandross!!! Bow down to the man!!
Miss you Brother Luther! Rest in Peace my man.
Nicely done!! He made the song his own, but didn’t destroy it.
LOVE Me Some Luther,But Not Even Luther Could Touch Whitney!!!They Should Just Play Whitney's Track & Call It A Day!
I like Luther, but I wasn't feeling this version. Something tells me most Americans feel the same as this doesn't seem to be very popular. Unlike Whitney, this is the first time I heard it and don't even remember him doing this back in SuperBowl XXXI. Anyway, RIP. He's still an R&B legend.
@@saxopio6280 It's the backing track. It's SO dated.
He’s in the top 10 best SB national anthems for sure
I miss his voice. I'm so glad I had the chance to see him before he left us. No other like him!!
Luther is the best male vocalists and Whitney is the best female vocalist!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾👌🏾🙏🏾✝️❤️🕊 R.I.P. both of you!!! They gave the world 🌎 something very special that only God could bless them with and now they are in heaven, singing in the choir of the angels 👼🏾 God Bless them both!!! 🕊✝️🙏🏾
This is my first time seeing Luther sing the anthem. And as usual, in his unique style, he made another song his.
Luther Vandross, had a beautiful voice.
My gosh, this was the most sexiest, soulful National Anthem that I've ever heard. Luther, you song your heart out. Rip Luther😚😇😢
Go listen to Marvin's 1983
My all-time favorite vocalist: Mr. Vandross.
Luther is never before or behind anybody, because he was in a class of his own! He sang thst song with ease and grace. Bless you Luther a musical genius forever!

sung like a super star
rest in peace luther
Marvin singed it tol
omg just stumbled upon this ...I miss luther so much....
Luther Vandross is that man. He had his own music playing. He didn't take off runnin with the words. Second best to Whitney.😍👍❤🇺🇸
Yes Luther yes.... (Pronounced Loofah) because the dude was straight fire. :) Man, we've been blessed some freaking legends. God bless Luther. Always missed.

@@jdr2758 in nutty professor (at 1 of the dinner table scenes), He was referred to as the black poverotti. Poverotti was a world renowned overweight opera singer. Luther was at his heaviest weight at this time
Luther Vandross was a legend, the King of R&B/Soul. The first time I saw Luther was here. I love you my angel 💚. Rest In Peace and Rest In Power Luther 💖 This is one of my favourites performances of the star spangled banner along with Whitney Houston, Beyoncé and Cher. R.I.P. Whitney/Nippy 💖✨
I don’t believe anyone else did this as good as Whitney and Luther
The uniqueness of his voice was and still is... unique.

Better than Meatloaf? No but still better than most.
Soulful. Bravo.
Wow so smooth
He nailed that song Perfercly
What a heavenly voice he got!
It is Just amazing that a man could possess a voice like that.
Voice of a angel!!!!!!!!
Continue to rest easy luther. He could manage that voice perfectly.

Luther was the man!!!!
Great job by Luther with that beautiful, rich voice. Miss you. RIP.
his voice was so phenomenal. had to listen to him and Whitney after Fergie distroyed it.
Quality. Didn't show off nearly as much as he could have gotten away with.
Rip Musical greatness Luther Vandross my favorite R&B singer male
No one can sing like Luther. Man this was good
Luther just giving a masterclass on how it should be done.
So smooth and the height to his voice. Supreme.
He left far too soon. x.

This sounds like an R&B song !RIP Luther!💔
The BEST and most FLAWLESS, CLASSY and ELEGANT , rendition, EVER!! I miss Luther so much it hurts!! ❤️🙏🏽
Couldn't agree more!
Vandross! The voice! I listen to him sing and watch him perform and I cry at what we the public have to bare these days on the music channels.
Marvin, Whitney and Luther....Wow!!! RIP Love and miss you all.
Whitney Houston has the best performance of the Anthem in terms of sheer power. But Luther Vandross has it for the smoothness; like seriously, people are gonna be conceived to this version of the Star Spangled Banner.
Yeah….nahhh. That distinction goes to Marvin Gaye.
He killed it!
I love this beat!!
HOT DAMN! Luther!
Best National Anthem Performance EVER
Best greatest Luther anthem. Luther when you return marry me.
Better than Whitney luther. They said it wasn't nothing. My favorite luther!
Jennifer Hudson killed tpit.
Brilliant! Miss him.
Luther, we still miss you.
Wow,just wow!!! A true singer... #icon #legend
Lovely rendition....RIP Luther! You were the best !
Luther Vandross did a fantastic job singing the National Anthem very sad that he had a Stroke & Passed Away
He and Whitney are tied for first place. This is remarkable.
Then you have never heard the Meatloaf version 1994 ASG.
@@nancyjanzen5676Ya heard it. It was good but ya vocally can’t compare to Whitney and Luther lol to be fair no one can lol
Best by a male ever!!
Whitney’s will always be the best, but this one and Jennifer Hudson’s both have a special place in my heart
I agree! Have you listened to Marvin Gaye’s version? It’s smooth.
What a voice ✨💖 he for me is the greatest male voice of all time. R.I.P. Luther Vandross 💝
Luther Vandross velvet teddy bear is surely missed
Clean + simple + elegant = CLASSIC Luther!
The best version ever.
Did you see Marvin Gaye version
Being a Pats fan, I’ll say that this was the best thing about that Super Bowl.
Flawless performance.
Such a classic!
Anyone here after fergies terrible anthem?
Hurt my ears. I believe it might have done permanent damage.
