- This is a walk around the perimeter of London Biggin Hill Airport, as close as I can get. There is the usual mix of chat, history, discovery and a healthy does of respect for those that gave their lives defending our country during WWII and in particular, the Battle of Britain.

A very interesting walk.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Phil for another great video cheers
Interesting walk Phil.
Hands-up those who spotted the squirrel..... 😉
😁
Great informative video as always Phil. Keep up the good work mate !!
Cheers mate, all the best to you!
Like all your other videos I found this video very interesting. I'm very interested in aviation history. Furthermore I used to regularly cycle along this road past Biggin Hill when I was a lad of 13 because I used to travel down to Westerham to explore the disused railway which sadly is buried under part of the M25 today. During the mid '60's I lived in West Wickham at the time. I must say I also enjoyed your Caterham video too as I moved there for a year or two in 1970. About Biggin Hill though I used to go the Salt Box cafe with some of my biker pals and remember it well. Happy days.
I’m so pleased you enjoy my videos, Michael. You have now piqued my interest in the railway which I have to say I was not aware of - something to add to my list! 😃
Another good trot out!
I’m managing to keep to one country walk per month, just planned the Feb one but waiting for some nice weather before doing that one!
Thankyou for all the informative and well-presented material you have released.Looking forward to next year;one interesting story concerns the Selsdon to Elmers End railway.Closed May 1983,there are still parts of it that survive, although the Croydon Tram network uses some of the old track-bed.
Thanks Derek, I’ve been meaning to do something there so will investigate it further. That will be the tram line from Lloyd Park to Sandilands where it would have gone to Bingham Road?
@@philswallow Correct, then on to Woodside and Elmers End.It was joined before Woodside by the now defunct Addiscombe to Elmers End line, closed in 1997.
As you said, it was Biggin on the Bump and it certainly is. Great video and interesting to see the old abandoned buildings. I went to so many air shows there growing up, sometimes two a year. And growing up less than 3 miles from the airfield we always had planes going over. Would be great to see a walk around the airfield, old buildings and modern hangers if you can get permission.
Great to see your dad's slides of the original guardians. I wonder when they were replaced?
Thanks Andy. I found a web page that seemed to suggest a few replacement dates for the gate guardians over the years. I know that the current ones replaced previous models but it would be good to see the whole chronology for sure
I spent many an hour in and around the airport airshows and all. I used to walk up saltbox hill from new addington, sneak out when my mum and dad weren't looking, the aircraft crossed the road and there used to have traffic lights those days
It’s a shame they no longer hold it, I remember some great shows years ago
Very enjoyable; well done on reaching 1000 subscribers too! I fly in and out of Biggin Hill regularly; sadly in a jet, not a Spitfire.
Many thanks! If you ever have some time to spare between flights just give me a call, I'm 15 mins from there and it would be great to have a proper catch up/compare notes etc
@@philswallow Occasionally I'm in Croydon overnight, how exotic! Would definitely be good to meet up.
Interesting historical detail.
You can see the out-line on Google Satellite Maps where the old Milking Lane cuts through from one side of the airfield to the other.
I hadn’t noticed that specifically but will take a look, thanks.
Hi Phil i live local to the airport and have spent many years exploring it.
I could show you what and where everything is and would gladly meet you for a stroll.
Thank you for this! Can you email me at phil@philswallow.com and we can liaise to set this up. I am thinking springtime might be good, when the weather is more reliable/pleasant. I really appreciate your offer 👍🏻
@@philswallow Hi Phil Email sent.
